" Don't Drink Apple Juice"! and Dr Oz

United States
September 15, 2011 10:56am CST
This is what people will take from this story. Dr Oz, G-d bless him, was just trying to inform people that there are higher traces of the good arsenic in apple juice. The FDA had a fit about it and said his study was faulty. But what they both should know by now , not everyone will get the whole story. All they will remember is that a Dr. said that apple is poisonous! But he didn't say that! Don't they know the American public will believe a rumor more that the truth. There are parents who won't let their kids get shots fearing autism. And many a young girl and teen refuse to drink Any type of milk because they believe it is fattening. Now this. all I can hope for is that the Apple juice industry has the b@lls the beef industry had when Oprah said something bad about beef. Time will tell. Your thoughts.

Well, in my point of view, I still believe in the saying that goes "an apple a day keeps the doctor away". Nothing can replace the nutritional benefit we get from the fruit itself. So, if we have to choose between an apple and a bottled apple juice, we better get the fruit and have it juiced through a juicer. But then we get most of its benefits through its skin, so we better eat the whole fruit in that case.

I'm Scr@wed! I can't eat raw apples. They make my tongue itch. Now I guess it is the arsenic that does it!

Sometimes, when you are sick, apple juice is one of the only things you can drink. When you have to be on a clear beverage diet, for example after surgery or being very ill. At these times you cannot have a whole apple or it will upset your digestive system again.

Bagarad, if memory serves, I like apple juice but it doesn't like me, it gives my heartburn. I once was spared heartburn by mixing it with ginger ale.

hi sarah, it seems that many has a lot of things to say about a product, like dont eat that but eat this; dont drink that but drink the other brand.. etc. am generalizing, but i think, it's just competition and marketing strategies mostly. because if it really is dangerous to health, i know FDA would definitely remove (pull out)such a product in the market. those are my thoughts. ann

I have the feeling that food contanimations will takes place regardless of the stringent meassures taken by the manufacturers. Take Japan country for example, they have high messures of food securities and due to radiation which took place earlier this year, I'm sure food radiation poisoning is taking effect and it's affecting the world. The leakage have disolved into the sea and it's penetrating even deeper to the sea foods we are taking daily and don't forget it's going to accept our children in years to come. We will hear even more news about children borned having 3 eyes, 5 ears or animals with 6 legs!

Personally I think in reality, it will be only time will tell what will happen from this. I know for one thing unless it would be something with a lot of Truth based and they quit selling it, I enjoy a good glass of apple juice from time to time, so I will continue to drink it when need be. I am Diabetic and this is one of the juices I can drink when my sugar levels drop too low that does not over affect me too bad.

There was a discussion about this at work today....what they said he said was that Minute Maid apple juice was the least likely to cause any problems....I guess I just saw the end of the show and don't really know what it was all about! Interesting though!

Makes me wonder if whoever owns Minute Maid paid for the study.

No, try to avoid anything that isn't natural, and don't worry about it if you can't.

What gets me is that's what's good for you today becomes bad for you tomorrow when some new study is done. But next year it will be bad for you again. That's why I believe little that I read anymore in the news about these food studies. Drinking caffeine raises blood pressure, but drinking coffee lessens your chances of adult onset diabetes. Cholesterol is bad one day and good the next. I would agree that the closer something is to unprocessed, the safer it is, unless you call washing it processing. I don't worry about eating eggs, but I know I should cut out refined sugar and white flour and white rice as much as possible. I don't want the government banning fudge or cola because they aren't good for me and I might choose to drink a two-liter bottle of Pepsi every day (which I and most others wouldn't.) The job of government is not to plan our diet choices and regulate them, but to educate us. They don't do a very good job of that either, since they keep revising their idea of a healthy diet.

Hello Sarah, I know there are at least two countries in Europe that are drinking apple juice since a long time ago. They eat a lot of apples, and they import big amounts of apples from other countries too. I don't know how it is in America, but I think it is the same. I ever heard apples are very good for healthy and I myself eat regularly apples. So, I think don't worry and if you like apples keep on enjoying them.

Bagarad, this time it wasn't the papers but DR Oz on t.v. which is worse! At least with a paper article only a few would learn about it, many people under 30 don't read newspapers! But it was on T.V. Everybody Has heard about it by now!

Ah! A voice of common sense. Sometimes I think the papers are just short of real news or want to distract you from it, so they come out with a food scare.

like always, it is better to be safe then sorry. i'm glad he informed people on his show about the arsenic being in apple juice, but i think the story has been blown way out of proportion. if it was bad enough the bad health effects would be much more dramatic and noticeable. still, it doesn't mean the long-term effects couldn't be harmful. just to be safe i'm only going to buy apple juice made in the USA.

That's the point, how will you be 100% sure the apple juice was completely made in the U.S. with apples soley from the U.S.?

I believe apple seeds naturally contain arsenic. Maybe when they are making the apple juice they are grinding the seeds up too. I think it's much better to just eat the entire apple. Get all that fiber. Don't have to eat the seeds then.

When I was back in Asia, I was working in the packaging industry. And I once had the opportunity to develop and manufacture lemon juice for mass production. A friend of mine was in contact with a guy who was selling a machine that would automatically slice the lemons, and squeeze it, to get the juice out so we can package it. When we looked at the process, we found out that it was unavoidable for some machine oil to get mixed into the juice. Although it was an exciting project, we eventually decided against it because we didn't want a rumor to get out that there was some oil getting into the juice even if it was way below the acceptable levels. We knew back then rumors killed products.

I will still drink apple juice and cider. My youngest daughter Shawn still loves apple juice and she is sophmore in college. Many college kids like apple juice especially for breakfast to jump start there day. One it is cheap and crisp and cool on the throat if refrigerated etc... There are so many benefits to apple juice I think it next best juice besides orange juice. For some people orange juice is to bitter, or puply or thick to drink. Apple juice is light and good when you have a fever or upset stomach because of the nutrients in apple juice. Thanks and have a great night. Sincerely unique16

I wish I could drink apple juice. I miss eating apples and drinking apple juice. I also miss drinking and eating oranges. Look, The Dr. Oz show is informative when I catch it. My girl watches it sometimes and he makes lots of sense. I think the government should stay out of everything. I don't think he said drinking apple juice is dangerous. So, it's safe to drink apple juice.

No he didn't say Don't drink apple juice but the knowledge of the level of arsenic is higher than normal will scare many into not drinking apple juice. You can't drink either apple or orange juice?

No I can not. Why you ask? Well thats easy, I am diabetic and I am not on any medication. I control it by diet. Now about the Apple juice, people have been drinking it for many years and not one case of arsenic poisoning ever reported. So, those people that look at it as dangerous are all a little off.

My apple juice is good and I give to my children. I do not understand how you can say that apple juice is not useful. It is a natural natural product is not like others where there are many preservatives that they would be more useful. I do not believe these things. nice day!
