In this scenario, imagine that you are dating someone for around 6 months, and the person you are dating has kids.
You are at a store, and you are looking at gift ideas for one of the kids. You are staring at a bunch of items, many of which are similar. Something catches your eye and you comment "wow, that's really nice, I like that alot. I would like to have it."
Hearing your comment, the person you are dating walks over, sees the item in your hand, says "yeah that is nice. I think my kid will like that." and takes it out of your hand and goes and purchases it for their kid.
How would this make you feel? How would you respond?

that's what I would have done as well, but the person didn't. I don't know why.

It depends on how he/she took the present from you. I say, take it back and tell that person to find their own present. As the first commenter would've said. Or you could find something else. Hopefully something better than your first pick and make fun of that present.
I always love giving presents and make sure I add a personal touch in it so that my nieces would know it was my selection. So even if their parents, friends, or relatives bought them something extraordinary, they always get a good laugh from mine before they go forth the next one.
