When I was travel in the train I have seen two to three beggars are there one is really needy person because he has no leg. But two other is well I don’t understand why they are demanding money.
A new system of beggars is print the card and distribute among the peoples. One day a lady bagger gives me card. I asked her what happened with your husband and you are younger so what arer not doing the work why demanding money lets with me I will give you work I talk with her in Hindi then suddenly she pick up the card from my hand and go ahead..
Suddenly a man said they are rice than us we gives them 1 rs. daily but we cant think how many rs. spend monthly on them. and how many rs they collected daily now the topic is start on beggar and I involved on it yes uncle you are right really they are not poor.. and see how she takes the card from my hand means how much anger on me because I said her to do the work…everyone start their own opinion and our time was going so fast…sometime we laugh also because one lady is joking on this topic and we all were doing the fun… You like to give the money to the beggars or to avoid to give the money to them
Do you feel such situation while you are traveling. In 6 to 8 hours journey 3 to 4 persons are came to demand the money..

Hello my dear friend.
This is really sad and not good for them to do. See anyone in need of food and or money should not be angry if one is advising them on ways to actually earn the money. I can understand that perhaps they need it right away, the least they can do is be grateful.
I had a situation one time where a man nicely asked me for money, saying he was hungry. I told him I was willing to buy him food in the restaurant across from us but that money I really did not have to give. He refused and said he wanted the money. I told him I did not have money as I could buy the food on my debit card. He asked if I could get the money instead. I explained again that I would be happy to get him some food but money I could not do, since he refused I got into my car and began to pound on the back of my car. Why?
One thing we all must always remember is that beggars should not be choosy and or ungrateful. When we are in need we should politely thank anyone for the help and or thank them for their time. It is the being polite that will prompt many to be helpful. It is people like him that make us all scared of helping others.

I lived in New York City for many years riding the trains with all the various types of scams. I once seen a woman come on the train with 3 children stating that she was homeless and her children were hungry. Many of the people on the train were very generous giving her dollars even five dollars. I watched the children as they asked the woman for money she told them to be quiet. After she left the train another woman informed the people giving that they were just scamed because those children weren't even hers. She has been going from train to train cars scaming for years. We have to be careful, there are indeed charitible organization for people to go to if they want to.

Hiya SK,
Oh dear what they are doing is to give truly bad off People a bad reputation.
This goes on in this Country as well.
They have Cards sometimes and they abuse the way they use it.
Trouble is lot of People really bad off here and they don´t get any help from where they should be able to.
These very bad off People if they try to ask for Money in the Street are pushed away as People think that they are just like the others the fraudulent ones.
No one knows who to trust as sometimes they make false Cards and People never know if they are for real or not.xxx

Hiya SK,
Yes that is the problem that a lot of them are fraudulent and make a lot of money out of it too.
Shame for the ones that are really suffering and cannot get any help as Welfare People turn a blind eye to them most times.
We have lots more living on the borderline of poverty as well much more than before.
In one Village alone here the number of Families asking for Food has gone from 700 to two thousand three hundred in a very short time.
However these get help from the Church but only with the Food.

surekharathi,
To be honest, I just felt that India really has a lot of beggars and you can really see them everywhere. What more in the train stations or trains, so it is really something for me when I first visited your country.
As for the latter, they are what people would call "professional beggars" who may be even be operating in a syndicate. I understand the authorities are trying very hard to eliminate these groups of beggars but I can see the challenges when certain quarters are corrupted and allowing them to operate on the "blind" side.
I do not travel by train in India, so I would not be able to comment if there are more beggars on the local than the express train networks. However, I would not be surprised if the latter could outnumber the local network if it is out of control.

Hi Surekha,
Local trains have more stoppage in stations unlike express train this is one reason for the same. In express train more checking is there as train is running for long distance. In my traveling experience I have to add that beggars are busy in express train too, earlier in A/C coach we were safe now they are coming in there too. But I agree with you, if we compare the numbers in both kinds of train, local train may be in the lead.

One reason that beggars are more in the local train is - they have to get down and catch other trains. We should not entertain them, I strongly believe that a beggar who is fit and fine, can do some work to earn his/her livings. They have got this begging very easy option.
Thanks,

Yes, I have encountered those people who stop you and give you cards and you are supposed to give them money, any amount. That's begging in a nicer style but it is still begging. Usually in our country those who are bringing cards with them are young people who tell us that they are students and they need some help in their studies. I have never given to any of them as they can always find some decent work instead of going around giving cards and asking for money.

In our country such things are largely happening around. However, in Mumbai, it is not possible for them to get into a local train as it is so crowded. One of my friend's daughter who is completing her PG, was asked to prepare a thesis on this group. She found many breaking news and challenging questions about the beggars of our country. It was around 3-4 years back and as she was in need of some real photographs, I helped her to get it done. I also travelled with her many days in different places to get real photographs without their knowledge. As I am much interested in photography, I took so many related photos for her project.
If I am going to explain the real life, it there is a lot to write. There are gang of people and they are hold of wandering children, old aged people man and women, and they are supposed to collect money and given all of them in the evening to the group leaders. They will not give even water to drink or food to eat also. They have targets and by evening minimum Rs 250/- to be given to the gang leasers. Depend on experience they have to give more. They will get more and more children from the street by offering nice things initially and catch them and send to remote places where they can't get an access to their destinations. There may be people to monitor them and if they do not 'perform wee', they will get beat and kicks and even people used to spit on their faces too!
This is only a just one example and many more. Still some other type of people are there with richness. About 10 years before, where my wife was working, there was a lady beggar used to come to their office. As they meet every day and she was living nearby the become friends. She told my wife that she started begging ever since she was a small child. Now she is living in a small house near the area and she is basically from Chennai. After one year, her mom's younger daughter's wedding was fixed and she was telling she got collected about 200 grams of gold for her marriage and she got about 8.5 lakhs of rupees with her as bank balance.
See this is the way people do their work. May be it is begging, but if do systematically they can be rich also.
Thank-s

Hello surekha, i normally don't donate money to the people who are young and healthy because that way we are promoting them to have their livelihood through begging though they are capable of doing any work. And once they make enough möney from begging they wont start doing any work. But on the other hand if i see someone disabled and incapable of doing any work i donate money/clothings/food to that person.

Beggars tend to hang around on public transport now, maybe because they find it easier to beg for money. Because when you're on the street, you can walk away from them and they try to beg for money. On public transport, you have no where to escape but just sit there and they'll bug you for money. I never give them money because you have no idea what they're going to use it for. If they had money to get on the train, no need to have my money.

Maybe we live in different parts of the world, but we do have beggars who keep on asking money from travellers. Me I dont give them money, as you said they should be working and not depending on easy money. Perhaps the government must do something about them.

There are more beggars in the local train than in the express because the local train stops at every station giving room for more beggars to board the train whereas the express train has limited stops. I do not encourage the beggars and especially the one with cards as i have heard stories that while you are reading the card you are hypnotized and all your belongings vanish in no time. They are thieves in the garb of a beggar. That could be the reason why the woman got angry when you asked her to work. Begging is easy money but one has to toil to get decent money. This is the reason i think most of the poor resort to begging. Happy mylotting.

Hello Friend!
I think India holds the record of having largest number of beggars in the country.
That is not because they are poor...actually what they think is that it is the easiest way to earn money..just to visit places wearing some old clothes and make some strange voices works for them all the time..!!
yes trains are the working place for them...and as express train doesn't allow them much so the local train become their only place...whenever i have been out traveling on a train..i don't remember a single day when i didn't encounter any begger on my journey..Well if you have come across any such day in India...then my advice to you is to contact the Guiness World record team and I am sure your name will be in the book my friend....hahaha:D
Happy Mylotting:-)
