My daughter in law was discharged from hospital after childbirth on 12th, today is the 6th day, it is a festival called ‘CHHATI’ for the baby. We have cloth washer women/men; who will wash all clothes in home if there is a birth or death in the family; we have barber; who will shave the beard/moustache of males in the home on the 6th day, they are attached with us since generations, by tradition as part of the rituals.
So the washer women took all clothes in home for washing, the barber shaved. The baby boy was bathed after his massage, dressed well.
He was made to lie on lap of hubby Professor (see picture), all our relatives came, washed his feet with raw cow milk followed by water, gave gifts like dresses, gold silver ornaments, toys, dolls and cash.
The jewelry, cash will be his property, will be kept separately; this is the beginning
This was followed by prayer and pooja by our priest.
In the evening we have a grand feast for 200 persons to celebrate the ‘Chhati’ festival.
Do you have anything similar?
The next festival will be on the 21st day of birth, on 2nd of October, it is called ‘Ekoisiya’ festival.
Please respond, share and comment.

God bless you

dear kal,
you have so many rituals and i try to remember them but am getting old, makes me unable to remember all.
i guess chhati festival is more of a family ritual.. and solemn?
just make sure the baby's feet are washed well or the ants will attack.
ekoisiya seems to be a grand festival too. i wonder what it is for. rituals always have some purpose, right? it is not done just because it has to be but rather, in our own belief it is done because of something.

There's nothing like that where I live. The closest thing to that is christening where they baptize a newborn baby by praying for the baby and the minister sprinkles holy water on the baby.
What your family does sounds real neat. A lot of people in my country would like something like that if it happened here because it would help the family out a lot too where they could have a break from washing their clothes,it would help them financially on them not having to buy as much things for the baby and it sounds like it would be a lot of fun!

Hello Mam,
I didn’t know that you people observe some ceremony on the 6th day of the newborn. We have ceremony only on 27th day or 29th day which will be naming ceremony. I know now you people are busy with the new baby and the functions.
I am so happy to see the baby again. Thank for sharing this information.
