Showering at night = bone pain?

Hi!
So here's my question: would showering at night cause you bone pain later on?
I was often advised by my mother to not shower at night. She didn't specify a time but since she scolded me when I showered after 8pm then I guess you shouldn't shower after 8pm? She said she used to always shower at night and now she has bone pains.
I think bone pains come when you've reached a certain age but could showering at night cause you to have bone pains at an earlier age?

I had not heard this before and I always take a shower at night. It is customary for everyone in my family to do so each and every night and to date I do see the correlation between the two.
Perhaps it is one of those old wise tales that many elders follow routinely.

Thanks for your response hardworkinggurl and Hatley.
Like you said, it could probably just be an old wives' tale.
I don know that arthritis is joint pain. I'm not exactly sure what my mother meant when she said bone pain either. You do bring up an interesting point though.

hi can I tease you I think its old wives tales but wise tales sounds interesting. bone pain for me took me to my doctor who grabbed my leg pulled it up high to my screams and then said severe arthritis. there are some excellent medication now for stopping this pain so one does not have to just bite the bullet so to speak and for all information it cannot be bone pain it has to be joint pain, bones do not have nerves to hurt muscles do, and do they hurt . ouch.

I don't really know. i shower a lot at night but have never had bones pains or anything. Instead, I sleep really well if I take showers at night, but will have a stuffy nose in the morning if I sleep without blow drying my hair. Anyway I think the bone pain just develops as we get older and it might not have anything to do with showers at nights.

I agree that bone pain may actually develop as you get older, whether or not you often showered at night. After a shower, I often feel quite nice and no longer feel sticky and itchy so it is quite nice to shower before sleeping.

Yeah I do think showering at night is better. All the day's dirt and dust are washed away!

She is completely wrong!!! Think about it, how could showering at night have any relation to bone pain? For that matter, how could showering in general have any relation to bone pain? It just doesnt make sense!!
I have always showered at night - because it helps me to relax and I like to be clean when I get into bed.
I say do whatever is right for you. If your mother believes her statements, just smile and say 'ok, mom!' And then do what you want. She is probably trying to be helpful, but she just isnt being logical!

I don't see how showering at night can lead to bone pain either. The elders sometimes have sayings that really do seem illogical to me. But since they sometimes have some truth to it, I do listen to some of them.

I agree, there is definitely some truth to the things our elders say that dont seem to make sense!! However, I dont see how this one can be true!
I guess I just have to hope I am right since I still mostly shower at night!!

the drop in temperature at night seems to be the factor behind this customary belief amongst our elders, which in fact is true as the tendency to get warm after a bath at night is minimal, thus the cold temperature tends to affect our nerves, muscles and bones relatively resulting to rheumatism, muscle spasms, arthritis and other musculoskeletal problems.

Oh. I did wonder about that. But I usually shiver after a hot shower in the mornings, not at night.

I shower at night, usually before bed, I do not suffer from bone pain. Maybe from the cold, which may lead to bone pain perhaps. As far as I know, being cold prior to sleeping can generate muscle ache from a possible fever or cold(sickness) that could develop, not so much bone pain.
But who knows, our elders are usually very wise, and have knowledge that has not been documented. Some of their advise may be little but they seem to be true in some cases.

I've heard that it's not good to be in a cold room after a hot shower cos you might get a cold. That made sense to me but I couldn't understand how a night shower could give you bone pain. But like you said, the elders sometimes have knowledge that have yet to be documented.

As far as I know, it is not. Showering at night wouldn't cause you bone pain later on.
But, please note that if someone already have a bone pain, then it is better don't take shower at night, as it would be bad for his health, especially because of the coldness.
An exception come if they are showering with warm water. A person with bone pain is allowed to showering at night if they are using warm water.

I always shower in hot or warm water. The only time I've ever showered with cold water was when I was running a hot fever. The cold water helped bring down my temperature.

I do think that sometimes the elders have many strange rules. And it doesn't make a sense to have the bone pain because having the shower at night. Probably your mom also tell you that sleeping with wet hair will give you headache when you grow old. I don't believe it. If you still feel comfortable, you shall not change it. Keeping the balance is important.

You're right in some ways. The elders do have strange rules sometimes. But most of their rules and sayings have some truth or reasoning behind it. There are of course a few that doesn't seem to make sense at all. And they wouldn't be able to properly explain the reason for their rules sometimes so we don't tend to follow them.

hi a year older no no no thats an old wives tale. Taking a shower at an y time if its warm water will not cause pain. pain comes from some internal thing thats wrong. probably your mom had
arthritis and did not go to a doctor to have it diagnosed and treated.,there are a lot of good medications that will stop; that
pain in its tracks bu t you must get medical help for this so called bone pain.arthritis is caused by joints rubbing against eah other when the cartilage is worn away not by showers.Showering at any time as nothing to do with internal pains at all. what an oldd idea. seek medical help if you have these pains as they can be
helped.

Arthritis has a characteristic presentation though which my mother does not show. And she hasn't complained of joint pains either. Like I said before though, I'm not really sure what she meant by bone pain. She just keeps warning me about it.

Hi, a_year_older. I have never heard of this "saying" before. I know that many people that have bone problems have problems being around the cold air. It will make them feel extreme pain. I just have never heard of showering at night, causing bone pain though. I really don't want to give you the wrong information here, but I don't think that I can believe what your mother has said to you.

Hi cream97! Thanks for your response! :)
I don't know where she got this saying from either so I was wondering if there was any basis for it. I don't really believe it either though.

I shower whenever I want to as well. Which is why I kept getting scolded :P
I'm not a morning person either. And I don't really like showering in the morning because I always end up shivering after the shower even if the water was really hot.

I always take a shower before going to bed because I can't really sleep if I'll not do it especially if I am outside the house for a day. With all the smoke and germs outside, I guess who will get sick if you don't wash yourself before going to bed.

I always shower at night because I think it's easier to leave for work the following day. I live in Japan and most people take their baths during nighttime. A majority of the Japanese population comprise of older people, and I have never heard that taking a bath at night has caused them bone pain.

Thanks for your response shuuen. It's nice to know that you know of older people who hasn't had problems after showering at night. I do wonder why my mother kept warning me about it.
