Extremes in all forms should be avoided

My father taught me from a young age that extremes in any area of life turn out badly. Over the years I have seen this to be true over and over. I learned a simple example of this when I worked morning to night on cleaning and the next day I was sore. I am in pretty good shape so that should not have happened.
Simple everyday acts of eating, sleeping, drinking can be overdone in the extreme.
I watch the political debate in the country and see the extreme right and extreme left harming the process. I see the extremes in art work deterierating into vulgarities and still called 'art' Same thing with extremes in religious beliefs. Any area I think of, the extreme is a negative.. Moderation in all things is still a universal truth.

That is really true. Keep your life all balance. Because even something seems good, but if we take it too extreme, it may harm our life.
Our friends above already tell a good example above.
Cleaning is great, but if you take it extreme, then it may become harming.
And for that extremist on religion, I don't think they are that religious. Because God Himself already tell us that we have to keep balance of our life, not too much, not too less (yeah, my religion tell it all )

But God said we should love him with all our heart, soul, and mind. Is that extreme?

I think that in regard to food and drink and going into exercises, etc. we should all remain moderate With politics and religion there is another problem. For instance, what would be included in that moderate part of the religion. For instance, would something that is accepted by the State and yet not by your religious belief make you an extremist? The same with politics, what would make you an extreme right or left person. Does wanting the rich to support the poor no matter how responsible the poor or who irresponsible the poor make you an extreme left person? Does wanting to keep all your cash make you an extreme right person?
It is hard to decide.

No ..

Radicals on the left or right
Does wanting the rich to support the poor no matter how responsible the poor or who irresponsible the poor make you an extreme left person?
I think demanding the rich support the poor who are irresponsible without trying to help the poor help themselves is an extreme and is wrong.
Does wanting to keep all your cash make you an extreme right person?
If you hoard all of it and hide and cheat on your taxes yes that is irresponsible and wrong and extreme.

That;s right, but it seems that some people demand things of others and seem to consider that they are hoarding things. I do think that if an organization is owned by, lets say, the Roman Catholics, and mostly paid for by its parishioners, that the government should not call them extreme if they do not allow certain groups to adopt. The trouble is that people confuse fundamentalism with extremism and regard that as those who do not compromise.

To everything there is a balance, only humans ignore this with their greed and selfishness. One can only wish for a beneviolent outcome to all things.

I agree with you. Extremes of any kind often lead to fanatism. But the words "universal truth" are words I don´t like to use because that also mean that we don´t accept or at least respect other people´s views. The line is very thin and I can only say what I think but would never think that this is right for everyone.
Take care

Yes, he did! As for words, I think that the words "universal truth" are one of the words that bother me more, even when I studied logic or math. The universe is so complex and our planet too that we cannot brag that we are the owners of the universal truth. My brother, a scientist, uses the word often and it´s always a cause of fight.

I understand what you are saying and I agree there is often a thin line. I also think there are Universal truths .. I think to wish everyone health and happiness is a good thing..is a universal truth. Would anyone disagree with that?
Still, I do belive there are truths for some that are not true for others.
Some cultures have habits that others would find objectionanble.

What about love? Do you want your partner to be moderate in his or her love for you?

Absolutely right! The concept of extremes you've mentioned here applies to relationships as well. We should not be too close to anybody and interfere too much in the affairs of others' lives. I've seen good friendships and relationships breaking up due to extreme love, care and affection.

I agree with you that extremes do us no good at all. It is a better way for us to be moderate. When we go extremes, we take more risks of doing wrong things. If we have a calm mind in whatever we do, things would become smooth and positive. That the way we deal with things and people goes certainly to moderation is a wise one. Thank you for the nice discussion, stary.

I am glad you had managed to place yourself a lot closer to the path of enlighthenment since i first met you. Acccept moderation and take middle path in every facet of our short life journey is the way to go, and no doubt is the universal truth. Until every thinking mind can accept this, our world will be a 'hell' lot of peaceful and harmony for the wise as well as the foolish to live.

I agree moderation is the key. I marvel at how wise my father was in so many ways. It occurs to me over and over how, as I mature, I see how wise he really was. Too bad I didn't listen to everythng he suggested, but kids have to make their own mistakes I guess...

Yes, much of the troubles the world is having today, are caused by extremism. If we can only moderate ourselves, then this place will be a better place to live.

It is indeed sometimes hardmto hit a happy middle in some things but the attempt to do so and awareness of the necessity will help us to be moderate more times tham not. Also when I get upset I ask myself..am I being reasonable or extreme and not reasonable??
