OKay so lately when my ex and I leave the house we come back to see that the dog tore through the garbage. We have had this dog in this new house for over a year and he has never done this. When my ex lived with him mom he did this every night when everyone would go to bed. But he never did it when we got a place together. So now he is doing it and what is mainly tore up is my daughters poop diapers! Why is he trying to eat my daughters poop? I mean the one time all he drug out of the trash was her poop diaper on top and tore it to shreds. What the heck is going on with him? It is gross!

Well this is fairly simple to explain. Dogs love stuff that is stinky. They like to chew on stinky things and roll in stinky things. To your dog, the smell is probably a lot of fun. As for eating poop, dogs have been doing that forever. Its a rather common thing to hear about dogs eating out of cat litter boxes, after all.

The fact that your dog tore through the garbage shows that he was bored (and maybe hungry) and he had a successful hunt. Because, from the dog's point of view, this was what he did: a successful hunt. You can't blame the dog for this. It is a natural behavior for a dog to be a scavenger. But it's you who must not let him reach for the garbage can. To avoid similar "accidents" try to put the garbage into a closed container, so that your dog won't be able to open it.
As for the other issue, any dog would eat human feces if they have the possibility to do so. The same would happen with cattle feces but there isn't anything abnormal in this behavior. While we find this behavior gross, it seems the dogs simply like the smell and the taste. Again, it is our duty to avoid our dog to come in contact with feces.

That is not unusual, I used to have a dog, that eat its owm poop. The dog would literally poop and eat. It was so disgusting that we had to get rid of the dog. We spoke with the vet and he told us that there are dogs that actually do that, he couldn't quite explain as to why that behavior happens, but he did say it is common.
It grossed me out so much, that I couldn't keep the dog, I even pucked a few times. I couldn't handle it.
