It isn't obligatory to choose a Best Response and it is of no practical benefit (in terms of earnings) to either the discussion owner or the person who is given Best Response.
Best Response is, to many people, a 'feather in their cap' but no more. Choosing a Best Response removes the discussion from the 'unresolved' list but, otherwise, does nothing else much, though it may slightly discourage other people from responding to a discussion if they see that 'Best Response' has already been awarded.
When deciding on a Best Response, it is best to wait for at least a week and possibly longer to make sure that everyone who is going to respond has had a reasonable chance of doing so.

Actually, I give the BR when someone finds a solution for me problem, but if not or a discussion doesn't call for a solution, I try to give them out sooner, because if I forget, my post will disappear before I know it..lol

Although I do not start very many discussions, eventually I do select a best response. Although the FAQ say we should wait a week it is when you are comfortable awarding it.
It is not compulsory and some members never do. I do at some point as this will let the members know that they outstanding responses was greatly appreciated. I have heard members say that sometimes two or more can be considered as the best, but since we can only award one they have difficulty in selecting.
Thus far I have not had this issue as I have been able to award one on mine. I am very active in my own discussions, so it makes it easy to remember who stood out amongst all for me.
There is no monetary and or rating award for awarding and or receiving the Best Response, but it certainly does give the receiver a great feeling receiving it.

Ryan, just to clarify, when I said about posts disappearing in owls box, I didn't mean it gets deleted, but I get so busy and either make new posts or someone brings up older posts, then my posts without the BR will be added to the next page(s) and I would forget about it..This happens a lot when school is in session..

I often choose the best response for my discussions. I chose them because I feel that they're useful for me and the're really care my views.
You can earn more a bit if your response was chose the best response.

I'm pretty new myself, but I really want to give a best response to every discussion. So far in my first month I have given out three. I check my discussions at the end of each week to see which ones seem to have had no new responses for a couple of weeks and aren't likely to get anymore, and then I carefully choose a best response. I always wait at least a week, but there are a couple I'm pretty sure of now and I'm just waiting until the discussion appears to be over. Sometimes when I see a response, I just know it will be the best one.

hi ryanyuan wait at least a week before giving best response to allow more of your friends to respond first. and yes it is meaningful
as I know i love to get them and to give them also. welcome
to my lot and enjoy it here. you do not have to do it,it is not mandatory but I feel its a nice gesture and it helps one to make friends here too so there is that also.

Well, me, no matter what I suggest you read the guidelines for discussions and also the FAQ. This is to avoid that your threads are removed because they do not meet certain criteria.
However, I personally have difficult to check the best response, because I decided about the sometimes embarrassing.
Greetings
