Promotions or salary increase?

Which is more important to you if you were the the employee who'd be given the choice on this?
I mean when your salary is increased, that meant you are performing well, right? They are giving you an amount equal to that performance... you'd receive more money also...
Or would you rather want to be presented with a promotion as a recognition of your efforts (with no guarantee of increased salary)?

i have had a lot of recognitions, and well though it helps you feel better.. it helps you do things better.. at the end of the day, when you get your salary, you feel you are only getting this much for all the work.. and you feel you still are at a losing side.
I have had an experience in the company where they put you in a higher position(adhoc) but you still get the same pay as what you have as an analyst

I would go for the promotion because when your position is higher you can be easily seen by your boss which means you can still get salary increase easily.

Hi chiyosan!
I have never heard of someone getting promoted but his or her salary did not increase. I thought when you get promoted, your salary increase, too? Isn't that the case?
But if I would have to choose, I think I will choose promotion. That's one step higher to the top. And there's always more chances of salary increase when you're at the top and performing more difficult jobs.

hi secretbear. I have in this company and well i know others too, based on experience and my friends who told me that their responsibility increased, they were put on in a trial period in a function and its like they are doing things as they seemed to be promoted but then the salar remained the same.

Really? If that's the case and if I'm in that company, I think I would choose salary increase.

I would choose salary increase. Although promotion is good because you are given recognition that you have done well in your job, it also means additional work (and I hate additional work hehehe). Having salary increase can give more options for your budget.

In the company I work in, whenever we were presented with a promotion, a salary increase would soon follow but then just in case this doesn't happen... Hm... I think it would depend on the financial situation of the receiver.
If that person is in a bit of a pinch and needs money, I'd say salary increase is better. But if that person is gearing more on career growth and is planning to leave his current company for a better one, I'd definitely say promotion. Promotion ALWAYS comes with additional responsibilities anyway so it'll look good on the resume to see that a person is promoted. It proves that he/she is an outstanding employee, hence the promotion.
If I was the one being asked... I'd go for salary increase since I need money and resources more than promotion and additional responsibility :P

hi there, it usually is supposed to be like that, i guess but in my previous work promotions don't always mean your salary will be increased... they would always tell us there has to be an approval first... =( Its great to have you in the discussion, thank you for taking time to respond, appreciate your inputs herewith. See you around, and happy mylotting! Cheers! d=) Godbless you.

Every employee would like to have promotion and salary increment because they work hard and at end of the day they feel that their salary should be increased.

i would prefer the promotion. promotion means an additional responsibilities in higher rank with automatic increase in salary and or benefits. i never heard of a promotion with no increase in salary.
i would take the risk of having more responsibilities as i guess my boss believes i can handle it.

This is a tough one! I might take the promotion with no raise if I was trying to break into another department as a way in. Money is tight these days so I would try to at least get them to say they would relook at my salary in 6 months.

I would rather have the salary increase. I really don't care about promotions since I think having a bigger income is more important to me. If the promotion comes with a substantial increase on the salary than I would choose the promotion. One thing that would make me think twice about a promotion is the added responsibilities that comes with the promotion.

That's tough. Depends on what you're aiming at career growth or financial growth?
For me, I'd choose the promotion. Why? Cause if I really needed the salary increase, having a higher position would land me a better paying job if I resign.
Being promoted gives you a sense of satisfaction, a sense of accomplishment. A milestone in your life, as for an increase, you'll easily forget about it and just want more money. Satisfaction is short-lived

well that is right, some companies though aren't like that and are not giving out as much chances to those they have promoted. Its great to have you in the discussion, thank you for taking time to respond, appreciate your inputs herewith. See you around, and happy mylotting! Cheers! d=) Godbless you.

In my opinion a promotion is not a promotion if it doesn't increase ones salary. Some companies think by giving out titles they can appeal to employees and to their egos..but most see past that ploy. Some will resent it and laugh about their boss behind their backs...with any promotion, it usually involves more responsibility and so more pay should be given ...

This is a very tough question, haha! I think for me promotion is more important. As the company sees and appreciates all of your hardwork and deemed it proper to put you in a higher position. Salary increase will come anyway as most promotions offer at least some incentive.
I think stability in the company is far more important, for me. :)
