scam or not

I have cable TV and Internet, but not the phone. I get a call every couple of months to sell me this phone service. Usually it's the same or a little more then the company I have for the phone. But last week I got an offer I couldn't refuse, it was one third the cost of what I have now and it would remain at that price for as long as I had the service I have now. What a deal. On top of that they would let me keep my same phone number. I couldn't pass this up so we spent about a half an hour setting it up, even an appointment for them to come out and do the inside work. That day came and went with no contact from the company. So today I called,
the company had no record of any such order. I was then sent to sales and they offered me phone service at over twice the cost and only for two years. Needless to say I refused. What I can't figure out was if this was a scam, how did they benefit from it? Am I dumb or what?

I think the sales department sometimes makes mistakes. I remember a deal I made once with the sales department and when I went to the actual office here to seal the deal...they said it couldn't be the way the man had described to me. I was pretty aggravated because I would be trading in my cable box for an HD one. My box was unhooked and in hand They made me a pretty decent deal anyway but it wasn't what the guy told me on the phone.

Sounds like a bait and switch. They offer you one thing but then come up with some bogus reason as to why they can't honor it ect and then offer you something more expensive then you wanted.
I'd take note of it and let people know of this scam, especially those in your area where this provider is located.

You are not dumb or anything like that. A little inexperienced, maybe. Just to be on the safe side, call the carrier that you have been using and ask them if you have been switched to another carrier. If you have been switched, tell them what happened and ask what you can do about this. If you get solicited over the phone again, for whatever, tell the caller that you never buy anything over the phone, and then ask the caller to send you their written offer by U.S.Mail and you will look it over and get back to them. If they are trying to pull a fast one, you will never see anything written to you in the mail. Good luck.

That's what I normally do and they say they can't do that. Then I say I can't deal with them. I have people now that keep calling me as a result of my dealing with a company a couple of times. Now these same people or others keep calling me, telling me they bought the first company and have some terrific deals. They are very high pressure and I can recognize them even before they tell me who they are. Two companies claim to be the one the old one morphed into. If I tell one to put me on their no call list, then the other one or even yet another one calls with the same story.
Unfortunately, where I live I can't get caller ID. i paid for it for about three months because I'd ordered it and they took my order and charged me. I thought something was wrong with my phones that they didn't show the numbers, but finally I called the phone company to see what I was doing wrong and THEN they checked and told me that service wasn't available in my area. They did stop charging me and gave me back the money I'd already paid, though. This was AT&T.

Well it doesn't sound like you gave them credit card information over the phone so that's good. What about your address did you give them that? That could be something, they have your name and address. What about social security number? I wouldn't worry to much if you didn't give them the information I mentioned, but if you did I would be a bit worried.
I don't know who you report stuff like that too, but I would do some research to report to someone. Maybe it's a new scam.
Good luck and I hope nothing bad comes of it.

If I were you, I would watch the first bill very carefully. I use to have cable internet and phone. They quoted me a price of 80 bucks a month for the two. The phone was some really cheap price. It was too good to pass up just like you said so I did it. I had it for about 2 years, I paid the bill without even looking or thinking about it. Well my bill was always around $125 per month. I knew they added charges and taxes but I didn't think about it. I just paid it. Well things were starting to get a little tight so I went through all of my bills to see where I could save money. In looking at my bill from the cable company, I was paying more in fees for their phone than the actual service. It was almost $40 more per month. So I cancelled it. Just used the cell phone.
Recently I moved and my building is a secure building so I needed a phone for guests to call to get buzzed in. As I was setting up my cable and internet in the new place, the guy said, "here's a deal on phone, blah, blah, blah." Well I told him, yeah I had that deal and your fees are 2 times what the service was so I'm not doing it. He swore up and down that I was wrong until he looked at old bill on my account. After that, he tried the hard sale by saying well, you are moving to this area and here the services are much better because it in the city, blah, blah. None of those extra fees for being out in the burbs basically was what he was saying.
So be sure to check out your fees and keep your old phone bills to see if the fees are much higher and then judge. You may be getting a good deal, but then again, it might depend on where you live.
Good luck!

That's why I don't answer to those kind of phone calls. People from those companies are always calling to my house in private number almost everyday and sometimes more than once. When someone calls me on anonymous I don't even answer so I don't have to get with those people. I know that they're only doing their work but it's annoying. Of course it was a scam of someone tricking people to that trap to earn some money. Be careful!!

Too bad that good deal didn't pan out. It could have been a scam but they didn't collect any money so I would suspect just plain inefficiency and you're better off without them.
Lots of people are dropping their land lines and going exclusively to cell phones but I haven't done that yet. I don't think it would save me any money and what if it was low on charge or something? I'll stick with my landline for everyday use and cell for emergency.

Phone calls like that are no different then all those internet sites that promise you to make thousands a month. Now, they might have been a real company, but for the mere fact that they lied to you and then told you that they had no recored of an appointment, is disgusting. If you want cheap phone service, you could get that digital service Vonage, or you could get the phone from your cable company or you can look into Magic Jack. I have Magic Jack and I love it. The only thing with that is that your computer has to be on in order to make and receive calls. Otherwise, you will get messages. The missed messages can be sent to your email for you to listen to. Good luck on your phone service.
