How Can An iPhone 4 16GB Be Nearly £100 Dearer Than An iPad 2 Equivalent?

Don't get me wrong, I love gadgets. High on my list of "Must Buys" if I had any money is an Amazon Kindle, a snip at £111 lol. However, I'm beginning to think Apple in particular are ripping people off, especially when you consider that they will bring something out..then replace it with an "upgraded" model..and on it goes. This happens with all their products, of course, not just the iPhone and iPad. Am I missing something here? How can Apple justify a price-tag of £504.94 for a bloody PHONE? What does it do? Make the tea or what? I can't imagine for one moment that ALL the Apps are FREE. Heaven forbid! So, do you own (either) the latest iPhone or iPad..or both! Please tell me what's so special about them as I'm struggling to figure this one out.

Sometimes, the "upgraded" is more in name than in reality. That is just the way to engage in trade.

Exactly..to make us spend more! From what others on here have been saying once you use anything by Apple there's no going back so, therefore they are hooked on the products and spend all their time saving up for the next in line. Why can't Apple just stop for a bit and bring out their latest model FIRST? They have the technology, why don't they use it?

I am an unashamed Apple devotee. However I understand completelty what you are saying. I am typing this on my iPod Touch which is totally awesome and is my diary, notetaker, web surfer, calculator, reference book and plays music and films although I rarely use those functions. What you pay for is innovation, ease of use, integration of programs, DESIGN! Also in the same way that Shoecity and Jimmy Choo both sell shoes you are also paying for style and yes, the name. But they are thimgs of wonder that are at bedt copied and never beaten. Personally I am very mobile phone phobic and make do with a 6.99 PAYG cheapo. But my Touch was over £100 cheaper than an iPhone and does evetything that does save make phone calls which I can do for free or very cheap via Skype anyway. As long as there is Windows Apple will be better!!

Well, that's true. I have 4 browsers on the internet now. If I want the minimalist look I go into Safari, which didn't work on my old computer. It does on this one and it's ace. I tend to use Firefox the most but Safari comes a close second, that's for sure. Can't you be my Sugar Daddy lol.

I have the first generation iPad. It's a pretty cool gadget (but a bit slow when compared to my laptop). The kids love it as they've loaded it up with a lot of game apps. It has now become a big hand held game console. When the new iPad2 came out, I immediately asked around what the differnce is. They say the new one is thinner, and has facetime. I would wait until the price goes down a bit before I consider upgrading.

Wow, if those are the only differences I reckon you're being very wise waiting!

Well, I would not worry about the iPhone 4 right now. On October 5th, the new iPhone 5 will arrive. I know that Apple products are not cheap, but they are worth the money. I have had every iPhone since they came out. I have all of them in boxes. I like to keep the old ones. Now the iPad2 is something awesome in my opinion. I think that would be good to come to MyLot while sitting on the couch and watching TV. I am saving for one of those now. However, I have to get the new iPhone 5. I guess I spoiled myself with all these Apple toys. I have an iMac, an iPhone and will be getting an iPad. I got my iPhone 4 at a special discount price because I was already a customer of AT&T, so I only paid 250 for the 32gig iPhone 4. If you have a service that carries the iPhone, then you might be able to get it cheaper. Look into it. I love my iPhone4.

Wow,I can tell you're a fan. It's interesting that you save the older versions. I can imagine them being on the Antiques Road Show in about 50 years time ane everyone marvelling at them, like they do with the very first computers now. What do they actually do, though? How is the price justified?

Well, I would say that the price is justified by a few factors. Unlike the competition, they are very well made products. Second they are looked at as the upper crust of products and third, they are all made in america. But the deciding factor between Apple and all the other rip offs is that the technology started with Apple, it was their innovation and they do everything that the competition does not. I have seen and played with other smart phones and none of them meet the standards of an Apple. And most of all, none of them ever met the standards of myself as a customer.

Most companies are always modifying and updating their products because they're all competing with one another to see who can produce the best gadgets. Apple products are really expensive, but you get what you pay for. Compared to other brands, I've found that Apple is far superior. Although prices are a little high on phones, where I live, if you have an upgrade available with your cell phone company, you can get the iphone at a much cheaper price. Heck, you can buy an iphone 3gs for 50 bucks. After having an iphone for 4 years, I couldn't go back to any other phone because I love the layout of the iphone and how simple it is to use. Apple computers are pretty expensive too, but they work and last for a long time and if something goes wrong, you can bring it to the store and have them look at it for free. The Apple people are super nice and helpful and I don't think I'll ever stop buying their products.

I must admit I love the Macs. John's work has them all over the office and I've had the pleasure of using one, albeit temporarily..so I guess if ALL their products are as simple to operate, then I can understand why they have so many fans. Just wish they were cheaper!!

So far I've found all Apple products fairly simple to use. Ever since I played with the iphone and the macs at the Apple store, I fell in love with their products and that's pretty much all I use. They are expensive but I usually wait for some sort of deal. I won't go out and buy the newest, latest gadget. Instead, I'll wait for the new version to come out and I buy the older version once the price drops. That happens a lot with the iphones. As for the Macbook, I got mine last year before I went away to college and they were having a deal..college students buying a Mac got a free ipod touch. Even though the computer was a bit expensive, I basically got another product that costs about 200, for free.

i have the ipad 2. its pretty cool but there is always something you can't do like anything with java u cant do cause they don't have java on the ipad 2.. only thing you can download is apps. and some apps are free but its just like a demo. of course you have to spend money to get the whole thing.. i don't have an iphone so i don't know about them, so actually i would prefer a laptop over an ipad 2.. u can do almost anything with a laptop..

In a way its true on top of that of what I read, what I hate the most is that people said that when we lose any ipod touch, apple has the thing so they can track it but they say they can't do anything about it because of the fact they want us to buy more of their products. Ipod touch are from $220, $299, $399 and can play music, video and apps. Some are free but there are others that you have to pay.

I can't help with if they are good or not, because I don't have either, but Apple does this because they can. Whenever anything new comes out that grabs people's fancy they start hiking the price because they know that sooner or later the customers will move onto the next new thing. I noticed this with some gadgets that my family and I have acquired over the years and then if they catch on, become more expensive, until it becomes mass produced, then it will lower it's price only to not be as popular. My first cell phone was expensive, over €300 at the time this was a few years back, the major features : it fit in my hand, it vibrated and had multiple ring tones a few no more then 3 years later I saw it at a discount bin for €20. This was when there was less diversity and phone applications moved slowly. Now they should have a warning label - Product may be out of date by the time you leave the store.

Yes I have an iPhone4 but I did not pay for mine. I have been a very loyal Verizon customer, to be exact for 14 years. We have a plan that is get a new phone every two years and or $100 credit. So as luck would have it I am still grandfathered into the plan and a month ago I called as I made changes to cheapen my plan at which time they told me I could get the new phone and still get a cheaper plan too. I understand to buy it out right would have been $599, oh my I would not have bought it if I had to pay outright, then if you are a brand new customer, then starting a new contracted plan then it would be $199.00 Yes not all apps are free but there are a gazillion that are. I personally cannot imagine downloaded all that is so unnecessary for me. My only guess is that it is a fad Janey as the iPhone5 is set to come out very soon, so the price will drop quite a bit.

Why do they keep bringing out new products? Why can't they just upgrade the first iPhone and call it iPhoneU for upgraded..or something. iPhoneU..just thought how brilliant that sounds!!

That was also my reaction when I bought an iPhone 4 and an iPad. But owning it for a couple of months now, I know the reason. iPhone has lots of capabilities that iPad doesn't have. iPad is like a bigger version of iPod touch. That's all. That's why I love my iPhone better. iPad is only good if you want a larger screen for watching movies, and for games and apps that are better with larger screens.
