Do you plan your trips before you leave or do you make plans when you arrive?

When you travel do you like to plan your trip before your leave (book hotel rooms, buy bus and train tickets in advance etc) or you do you prefer to find hotel rooms and buy tickets when when you arrive at your destination? Why?
I have tried both. I have been on some vacations when I only bought a plane ticket and booked a hotel room for the first night before I left and I have been on some vacations when I made hotel reservations and bought bustickets for the entire vacation before I left.
I think that there are advantages about both ways of travelling. If you make reservations before you leave you don't have to walk from place to place because you can't find accomodation, and when you go to the train station you won't hear comments like: "Sorry, there are no more tickets left, you must wait one day".
On the other hand if you don't plan much you have more freedom. You can stay a bit longer if you really like a place and you have time to visit interesting places that you suddenly find.

I have always made all accommodations prior to going. I have never even considered the other way of doing it actually. I like to make an itinerary of things we will do while we are there. This way we will have plans and our hotel will be close to all of the things we will be doing.

You are right that you definitely have to check out their website. I always do my research before I choose a hotel. I especially read reviews. I would never want to go somewhere and stay in a bad hotel and not enjoy my trip because it is an unsafe neighborhood or because of bad customer service!

I also read reviews because I choose a hotel. I like to know what kind of experiences that other people have had before I decide if I want to spend the night there or not. The internet has made it a lot easier to find that kind of information and that is very nice, because I like to plan my own trips.

It is nice to live at a hotel that it is close to the things we plan on seeing or doing. I like to find some hotels online before I leave. In the past I always used my guidebooks to find to hotels, but sometimes the information in the guidebook isn't accurate anymore and I like to check to check the information online and visit the websites that belong to the hotels. I use the guidebooks to read about the sights and that kind of things.

For me, i prefer planning my trip a few months before departure. Not only in the sense of hotel booking but also itinerary planning. Its better to have an itinerary and get to know the destinations, getting about and the culture and behavior of the locals in the country I am visiting. This way it could save me a lot of time and will ensure that I would cover the highlights of the place.

The next places that I would like to visit are the UK and Ireland and last time I went to the library I borrowed a huge pile of guidebooks. It is very interesting to read them and think about my itinerary. I agree with you, I think it is a very good idea to get to know the destination, the culture and all those things before I leave. I always read about my destination, sometimes I don't plan an exact itinerary before I leave, but I always read about the place that I am going to visit. When I read about some interesting sights or places I write down the names so that it will be easier to plan my itinerary later on.

Before I went to the UK in 2007, I did some research online and I found the site for the northeast of England where one can request for a guide on places to see which they are sending by post free of charge. That guide really helped me a lot and saved my time.
My next travel plan for next year is Vietnam and I am starting to do the research now, places to see, what to do and culture of the people. Now I know how should I behave when I get there.
It is still more sensible and practical to plan ahead. Have a nice time in the UK!

Thanks. The free guide sounds like a nice way to plan your visit. I have borrowed many books about the UK and Ireland at the library, but I find it very hard to choose which places to visit, because there are so many places that sound interesting to me. I often have that problem when I want to plan an itinerary, because I am interested in some many different things
Vietnam sounds like an interesting place to visit. I wish I had the money to go to Asia, that is one of my big dreams. I think it is great idea to do your research now, that way you have time to learn about the places and the culture before you leave. Have a great trip

Hi Porcospino!
I prefer prepare everything first before going through my travel. I'm not very lucky about finding good rooms and accommodation on the spot so I prefer to book hotel rooms even before I leave for my travel. I don't like encountering problems in finding accommodations and arranging transport when I'm already in the mood for relaxing and traveling. And besides, the time spent for finding accommodations can already be time spent for traveling. It's like a waste of time.
If you are adventurous and have lots of energy, then I think booking hotel rooms and looking for transport can be considered an adventure and challenge.

I have experienced that, too although it wasn't hotel or any lodging. It was finding a cottage in public resorts. And I did not like the experience because there were many tourists and many resorts were already full. We ended up in a not-so-good resort and there were many people and swimming was not fun anymore.

I have experienced situations where it was hard to find a room when I arrived at my destination and I still remember how frustrating it was to walk from place to place without any luck. That is one of the reasons why I have decided to plan ahead next time. I think that I will be able to avoid some problems that way and that the trip will be more relaxing. I don't regret travelling without planning much like I did in the past, because I enjoyed the freedom and the room for spontanious ideas, but I want to do things differently next time. I want to book hotel rooms before I leave, because then I don't have to worry about practical problems when I arrive at my destination.

Personally I have done both, but since my kids were born it has gotten difficult to do things spontaneously and at the last moment. When it was just my hubby and I, it was a lot easier to escape from one day to other, but with kids it's not the same. So lately I prefer to plan and book well in advance and make preparations with time. Another factor that plays a role is money, with booking in advance you can figure out how much the trip is going to cost and plan for the expenses and/or pay little by little instead of having to pay everything up front.

That it true, when you book in advance it is easier to figure out how much money you need. When I travelled without planning much it was hard to know much money I was actually going to spend, because I didn't know where I was going to spend the night or even which cities I was going to visit. It was nice that I was able to do spontaneous things, but find it easier to relax when I know that I have already taken care of the practical things.

Planning is easier and probably more cost effective, but once in a while you need to get away spontaneously and just have fun and live life to its fullest.

I also did it both ways.I find that by not taking care of the arrangements ahead of time,it is risky. One time after 14 hours driving, when we got to our destination, could not find accomodations, for hours, and we were really tired. So now I tend to book everything before leaving, this way no headaches and we get to enjoy the trip more. Also it depends for how long you are going for, since if you only have a week, you do not want to spend too much time looking for things. It also depends as to where are you going! When you are young and go backpacking for a summer with friends,is different from when you are retired and you go on a trip or a week or two.

I have experienced the same thing. When I travelled without planning much it was sometimes difficult to find accomodation and I had to walk from place to place for hours. It was exhausting and it is one of the reasons why I have decided to make book hotel rooms before my next trip. There is less room for spontanious ideas that way, but it will also be more relaxing, because I know that I have already taken care of the practical things. I think it will be able to enjoy my trip more that way.

You still can be spontaneous about what you are going to do while you are there!.Also i find that these days, with the internet, you can really check out the accomodations, get some tickets for certain events and have everything waiting for you when you get there.

When I travel I do not make strict plans. I know where I am going and that is it. Usually I check at home, which things there are to do. For example what activities there are and sightseeing areas, cities etc. I take this information with me. When at the traveldestination I am in the mood to do something I look at this and decide where I would like to go. I plan it myself, do not use any touroperator. This usually saves me a whole lot of money. I would hate having my whole trip planned from day to day, you never know who you are going to meet and what things you might discover yourself. Having a planned trip just gives you no oppertunity to do some spur of the moment things. When you meet a local and they have something cool to show you, you should have the time to do so, these activities could never compete with the tourist trips that usually are offered.
My tip for travelling, look up information. Chat with locals and discover the country on your own.

I also plan all of my trips on my own, I think it a lot more fun, and it is nice to read about the country that I want to visit and pick out the places that I am interested in. When I travel I usually have bring a notebook where I have written down the names of the places that I am interested in, practical information and that kind of things.
Yes, a planned trip doesn't give you the chance to do impulsive things and visit places that you suddenly discover, I think that that is the biggest disadvantage about planned trips. In 2010 I travelled around in Europe for one month and I only made a hotel reservation for the first night, because I didn't know exactly where I was going and I loved the freedom that it gave me.
On the other hand I find it more relaxing to make some hotel reservations from my home, because I don't have to waste the time looking for accomodation and I can spend the time on sightseeing. I think it also depends on the time of the year, in the peak season when there are lots of other tourists I often prefer to book a hotelroom before I leave.

It must be very nice in your way of traveling. We never know who we are going to meet and what would happen to us in the trips. So, just leave yourself enough free time, especially in the vacation travels. Great points.

When we travel we have a plan of how far we will travel in a day and where we will go. Along the way we may stop and see some interesting things. When we get to our destination we have an idea of what we want to do but are flexible and our plans can change. I don't like to hold to a tight schedule.

I think that it is a good way to travel. I like to have flexible plans, because sometimes we meet someone who recommends a place that we hadn't thought about and sometimes we decide to visit a place that we didn't plan to visit. Some of those impulsive decisions lead to some interesting experiences. When we husband and I travelled around in Europe de decided to visit Bratislava in Slovakia even though it wasn't a part of our original plans. We did it because we wanted to break the journey up in smaller parts instead of spending a lot of hours on the train, but it turned out to be really good decision because we both liked the city a lot. It was actually one of the most interesting places that we visited during our trip.

I usually book my international flight 6 months before I travel and most often I book my first accommodation by email at a similar time. Then I read more about my destination to get an idea of places in the region that I am going to that are worth visiting. Only once I am there do I use the phone to make other bookings for more accommodation.
I turned up in Lisbon on a Saturday evening and the accommodation I had seen in the guide book was full up. I tried four other places and didn't have any luck. At last I did get told the accommodation that might have room and it did. Another time I went to a motel in Victoria that I had seen in my travel guide book however I was shocked to see it had closed down. I looked in my book and went around to five other cheap options. None of them had room and I was getting desperate. I asked a receptionist if she could suggest somewhere that might have room and give them a call. She found me and my kids an inn and it was great.
On my latest trip I booked four nights and the price was quite a lot. However I got stuck in Bogota on my first night due to missing the last flight to the coast. I still had to pay for my night at the coast even though we weren't there. So we had three nights but had to stay an extra four nights because my kids got sick. I found cheaper accommodation for the rest of our trip to Colombia.

I have experienced the same thing as you experienced in Lisbon and Victoria. When we arrived in Bucharest without a reservation we couldn't find a room. The places in our guidebook didn't have room and we asked them to recommend other places, but those places didn't have room either. We were getting pretty desperate, because it was late at night and we had to find a room for the night so we ended up staying in a luxurous hotel. We usually try to find budget accomodation, but we didn't really have a choice and we had to take what we could get.
The worst situation I have experienced was in Budapest. I wasn't really worried about finding a room, because I had a list of hostels and hotels in my guidebook. Unfortuneately some of those hotels didn't exist anymore and the ones that did exist had no room. I went from place to place for many hours and I finally decided to spend one night in an expensive hotel and try to find another kind of accomodation the next day. The next day I was really lucky, I walked by a small guesthouse that wasn't mentioned in my guidebook, I asked them if they had room and they said yes. I was so happy it was a very cheap place and the staff was very friendly and helpful. I stayed there for the rest of my trip.

Making your itinerary before your trip could prevent hassle, stress and burden during your vacation. If you have everything neatly planned beforehand, you will no longer be wasting your time looking for a place to stay, where to take your kids during the day, what to do upon arrival, where to eat, the exact time for you to buy tickets on your way home.

I have tried both planned and unplanned trips, and it is true that a lot of things are easier when you plan ahead. You don't have to worry about finding a room for the night. You can go straight to your hotel, leave your luggage and start sightseeing. If you have to walk from place to place in order to find a room you sometimes waste a lot of times that you could have spent on other things. I think that is one of the disadvantages about unplanned trips.

I usually plan my trips before I leave. I always travel on a budget. So the best option is to plan your trip ahead so that the costs can be monitored. As against to making plans when you arrive at your destination, you might waste time going around searching for places to stay and things to do. Also, that will cost you more since you are considered walk ins for hotels as against to those promos if you pay in advance. But the concept of having no plans at all when you arrive at a destination sounds like a lot of fun and exciting. I will only do that if I have the money to burn. hehehe...

Last year my husband and I went on an unplanned trip. We travelled around in Europe for one month without booking accomodation from home. It was fun, but you are right, there are two problems about that kind of trips: You often end up spending too much money and the sometimes you waste a lot of time walking from place to place if it is hard to find a room. Next time we have decided to plans things better from the begining, because that will be cheaper and more relaxing. It will be nice to arrive at our destination and go straight to the hotel without wasting a lot of time looking for a place where we can spend the night.

I have a checklist as well, that makes it easier for me to remember everything. I have already starting planning my next trip. It will take a while before I will be able to travel again, but I am trying to find out how much money I will have to spend. I visit the websites of the hotels and the hostels in order to figure out how much money I will have to spend on accomodation. It is fun to plan everything and read about the places that I want to visit.

Actually, when i was in College. My friends and I hangs out every week end and then while hanging out we just came up a plan to go to this place and booom!!we pack our bags and go travel..haha...

It sounds like a fun way to travel. When I was younger my friends and I travelled to other parts of the my country together. We didn't have a lot of plans before we left. We knew which islands we wanted to visit, but we hadn't decided to which parts of the islands that we were going to explore or where to spend the night. We always found a place to spend the night, but if we had been unable to find a place we could have slept in the car, so we weren't worried about travelling without hotel reservations.

I think it is a good idea to leave some time for flexibility instead of planning every single thing from the start. Sometimes it is nice to be able to do something spontanious or visit a place that you suddenly discover. When my husband and I are going to the UK and Ireland we are going to make some plans before we leave, but we don't want to plan everything, because it is nice to able to do spontanious things. When we travelled around in Eastern Europe, the unplanned things were some of the best experiences.

I think that there are a lot of interesting places to visit in Europe. I live in northern Europe and I have visited most of the other European countries. Yes, when you work it is important to plan ahead. When I was younger I was able to travel for several months because I wasn't married and I didn't have my own home or other responsibities. Today my situation is different and I have to make plans in advance because of my job, my husband's job and our pets.

I am always a planner because I like to know that I have enough money to do what I want then have enough left over to do some shopping. My daughter on the other hand never plans and tends to cut herself short. I tried to teach her to save and spend wisely but for some reason she got her father's genes and likes to spend especially for other people whether she has the extra money or not.

I also like to know that I have enough money for the things that I want, and I always check the prices before I leave in order to see how much I am able to spend on accomodation, transportion and food. I want to make sure that I will also be able to afford the other things like shopping and museums tickets. I always buy some souvenirs when I visit another country and I also buy gifts for my family and my friends, so I have to make sure that I am able to afford those things as well.

Sometimes I travel the same way as you and make all (or most) travel arrangements before I leave. If it is during the peak season and if I know that I only have short time to spend at my destination I prefer to plan ahead. I did that when I travelled to Latvia and Lithuania in 2009. I was really happy about that decision because I was there in July and it was hard for of the travellers who didn't book ahead to find a place to spend the night.

For me the 'holiday excitement' starts the moment the idea of going on a holiday is conceived. The entire planning process gives me joy. I have been on several holidays and I get on the Net to study the various packages that are on offer and also try and learn about the country I would be visiting although I only take package tours. I make a check list of what I need to do and what I need to take.

I feel the same way about the planning process, I really enjoy it. It is always interesing to read about the place that I want to visit. Right now we have a lot of guidebooks in our living room because we are reading about our next destination (the UK and Ireland) I don't have much experience with package tours. I have tried that kind of holiday a few times, but most of the time I prefer to travel independently and plan things on my own. I like to read about the different places and make my own itinerary.

It depends on where I go to. If I never been there I will inform before I leave as much as possible what I can expect, what is possible to do etc. Actually I already do that before I decide for that place.
Last summer I plannend a part of my trip (what to do and where to stay on my way to Hungary and back home). I stayed some weeks in Hungary, did not plan what to do there. That I decide mostly at the same day or one day in front. So enough time to visit what I want. If I have vacation I am not in a hurry and I don't need to go anywhere.

I do the same thing. If I have never been to the place before, I spend a lot of time looking for information about that place before I leave. The internet is a great source of information, but I also use guidebooks. Which places did you visit in Hungary? I have been to Budapest and while I was there I thought about visiting some of the small towns close to Budapest (I don't remember the names of them, but the things that I read about them sounded pretty interesing) or maybe Szeged, but my time in Hungary was limited so I chose to stay in Budapest and explore the other parts of Hungary on another vacation.

Yes, in a way it is more exciting to go on a trip where you haven't made detailed plans because that leaves room for impulsive ideas and gives you more freedom. But I also think that there are advantages about planning ahead, because it is easier to relax when you know that you have already taken care of all of the practical things and you know that you will have a place to spend the night. It is hard for me say that one option is good and the other one is bad, because in my opinion both options have some advantages and disadvantages.
