Love, they say, is pure and good. But what is love really? Love is the desire to be close to or a part of something. Does that therefore mean that it originates from selfishness? What are your thoughts on love?

If we looked for a spiritual answer then we might look for the origins. The root of love however is like that of a tree. The fruit of our desires can certainly be selfish or be given but I would say the root of love is seeks water and nutrients. Those life giving qualities are trust and respect. These two provide for and allow love to blossom.
for anyone who wants
yours sincerely,

Certainly, there are just as many different relationships as there are people. How can a person define love in general? It is hard enough to understand it for ourselves perhaps but there are different kinds that is for sure and changing, love is changing, now that is a forward thinking thought.

Yes that is interesting. Love today would be different from love yesterday. They say if you ask 100 different people what is love you will get 100 different answers. I agree with both of you, respect is a huge factor when it comes to love. Thank you for your great responses

Respect is huge. There can be no love without respect as far as I am concerned. But then it occurs to me that many have relationships with no respect. I don't know. I do know, there is biology and then there is love. Love changes as you age as does biology. Spiritual love quite different than animal love.

Selfishness of being with the one you love? Then yes, it is for me. I only want the one I love to be with me. But if he /she doesn't love me, then I won't be that selfish to keep her/his happiness away from her/him. Since my selfishness stops when I don't really have the right to be selfish for someone.

@stephcjh: Yeah. Cause if only one side is giving, then that relationship won't last so long. :)

Love is a fusion of two individuals. They will become one and they will share everything to each other. It's not selfishness because there's a willingness to give and do everything for the sake of his/her partner. They will continue life together, in good times and in bad times. That's how great love is.

I think love is the best feeling ever. To be in love is a great thing and I think it is followed by happiness. No matter what financial state one is in, he is happy if he has love, i feel. But the root of love is trust I believe. And trust is also one of the hardest feeling to achieve.

how about if i say "Evil?"
the evil that i mean is not those of devil but a negative form....
that in everything that belongs to universe is a cycle of life....
from positive to negative and back to positive and so on....
NEWSNEWSNEWS and so one... making it N-E-S-W-N-E-S-W-N +++
Evaporation, clouds, rain, evaporation again and so on...
if there is no existence of SELFISHNESS, then how can you identify "LOVE"?????

I have said in a previous post what I believe love is. And I have to say that the root of this sum up of feeling and thoughts which is called love by the majority of people is clearly our interior, maybe even selfishness. We love somebody or something because we feel good from that, so we are selfish if we look from this perspective. I guess, despite of what other say, "love" is not felt in the heart, it is felt in the brain, as it is only a perception. If a person loses his memory, and will meet a person who is close to him, the amnesic person won't feel a thing.
