Last night my son opened the fridge to have an ice-cream. But he might not close it well and there was still a little narrow. And therefore, today the inside stuff is melt. I hope the factory shall make an improvement to the fridge. Such as there will be a flash light on the door. If you forget to close it well after a while, it will flash. Or it will have a beeper and it will make a sound if you don't close it well for a few minutes. So such kind of mistake will not happen again.

Our fridge does have a light and beeper. If the fridge door is open for a few moments more than it should, the beeping continues till we close it. I broke the switch that regulates this...by mistake..while I was cleaning the fridge one day. What happens is that the switch remains pressed when the door is closed and the light thus gets switched off. When the door is opened, the switch gets on. When I broke it, the switch would remain on even when the door was closed and the beeper would sound. I've stuck scotch tape on it and so it's always like the door is closed...even when it's open!! So, now we can't figure out if anyone's left the door open by mistake :-( And when the scotch tape wears off, it beeps all the time till I put a new one.

I think a bell on a timer might even work better. That way if you are in another part of the house you will hear it and come to close the door. I would hope that things don't start defrosting in the freezer if the door is left open very long. It is pretty important to have things kept cold and fresh.

That will be a pretty good idea since it happen to many people, I had the same experience like you but lucky that I have discover it earlier before everything melt down. To add another idea, the fridge door can also install a kind of hinge that will close the door automatically just like what we usually had for our door.

You are very lucky to find it before everything thawed out.

That certainly would be useful as it has happened to me too. Although I am not sure it has not been though of before. But yes something that will prompt us somehow would certainly help to save the items from spoiling and or defrosting.

Actually, the fridge of our family friend where we stayed last APril for my daughter's graduation in Manila, was similar to your suggestion. If after a few minutes that it's still open it would beep. You will know that the fridge is still slightly ajar or is still open. I experienced not having it closed well, and while eating we heard it beeped. Thus , we discovered that the fridge was still slightly open .

I think it's an imported one and expensive . But i think our local manufacturer could imitate that or maybe do your suggestion.

I think that happens a lot to people with children. I know I used to accidentally do that when I was younger. Now, my dad has that problem because my mother has dementia. And she forgets to close the fridge all the way too. I know when I've visited them I've gone in to their kitchen and seen the refrigerator not quite closed. It would be nice to have some kind of beeper to alert one when it is not closed. I imagine if one is rich they can have something like that installed. But we are not rich, are we my friend!

Fridge Door Alarm - Door alarm for the fridge
youless, FYI, there is such a D.I.Y thing called fridge alarm that you can actually buy and fix it to your fridge door to prevent this accident from happening again. It is a two-piece fixture which will give out an alarm when they are being separated apart after some time. Some models even come with a digital thermometer that will constantly keep track of the temperature around the fridge. Other than buying this piece of equipment, I think you can always adjust your fridge to tilt backwards so that the doors can be shut with a certain force created by the angle of tilt. In this case, little or no force is needed to ensure that the doors could be properly closed. I am sorry to hear of your accidental lost and hope that this will be of help.

But it seems it looks weird to have such kind of device on the fridge. We have something like that in the windows of my dad's house. When there is break-in, it will alarm.

The idea of a beeping function is a great idea! Cars have alerts letting you know if you are not wearing a seat belt or if the door is open so why can't refrigerators have this? I have had an instance where my fridge broke and everything spoiled because I went on vacation and accidentally left the door slightly opened. If it had beeped I could have saved myself a thousand dollars getting it repaired and buying groceries.

That's a good idea, a flashlight or a bleeper to warn that we haven't closed the fridge door properly. Some years ago I didn't shut the freezer door one morning before I went to work. When I arrived home, everything inside the freezer had thawed out, and all the melted ice had flooded the kitchen. The defrosted food was inedible also. Your idea of a flashlight or bleeper...why don't you suggest the idea (get your idea copyrighted first though) to a fridge manufacturing company and see if they can patent it for you? You, so long as your idea is legally protected as being yours, might make some money from it?

That's a great idea. At least, i won't have many extra jobs to do, like need to check out the refrigerator, to make sure the door was well shut before i went to bed. It ever happened a few times, where some of my chicken meat gone bad because the ice are defrosting, whenever the door of refrigerator is not well shut.

This also happens to me. I usually eat midnight snacks and sometimes I forget to close the fridge properly. My mom scolds at me when this happens because some of the food in the fridge gets rotten. I hope fridge companies will develop a technology that reminds you or tells you if you didnt close the fridge properly

Pretty support your suggestion,I think it's a very good point for fridge factory to increase their service for end user. The condition your decribed I met several times in my life. I think if the fridge factory can recevice and use this suggestion,it can save a lot of money for electricity. It also protect our environment because of the decrease of electricity use.

I think that is a great idea. I know sometimes if you fill your freezer up and something is sticking out of it too far, the door does not always close right also. I think they do need to put a warning sound on it to let you know it is ajar.

Yes , this is really a bad thing. May be there are another two simple methods to remind us to close the fridge door after take a thing. one is to take a spring coat in the door that used to automatically closed the door. another is to take a big note on the door to remind me to close the fridge door. Also in the refrigerator room door is affixed to a reminder note. preferably in the door's inside, so leave the room where the refrigerator when you can see.

When it is full, it will still be a problem to close the fridge. But at least it should give me an alert.

That is quite helpful. I hope those concern about tweaking something about the current appliance can take note of that. Your suggestion is useful since kids and some other family members may forget to close the fridge. Sometimes the loose gasket that holds the door is to be blame. You have to ask your appliance store how to resolve this. It is normal because we often open and close the ref.

This used to happen always with us, but then last year we went to replace my old fridge, which was anyway not big enough for us. So we went to do some research and found a great new model by Whirlpool. This fridge is set up in such a way that the front part of it is a little bit elevated compared to the back part. So if you leave the door open it automatically closes on its own. So we brought it home as it has also got a 4 star rating for energy efficiency. Just when I thought it was an awesome model, my friend bought a similar model but with added function of an alarm if the door is left open. Also after you open it once and then close the door, it locks itself and you cannot open it for at least a minute.I think these types of features are what you are looking for.
