Mental Hospital treatment....HELP!!!?

why did they use ice baths on mental patients and did it even help them???

I didn't know that. I have 2 friends who are schizophrenic...one of them is frequently hospitalised but she didn't mention abt that. What's the purpose of ice baths? Thanks.

OIC...docs are supposed to be extremely intelligent people and so it's unbelievable that such 'stupid' treatments were being carried out!

In the past the mentally ill (or lunatics as they were referred to)were treated in a shocking way. The old mental institutions or asylums were like prisons; some patients were tied to the walls or a bed with leather restraints. Other common treatments included electroshock therapy, insulin shock therapy, and wrapping patients tightly in sheets that were saturated with ice water or putting them in baths of ice cold water.The shock of this was supposed to calm them, but generally reeked havoc on their bodies.
