i have been an English for just three years in China, however, i felt more and more frustrated when i was involved in my teaching. i am eager to make a lively class and make my students study happily and get a high mark. but i find it difficult. is there anybody can give me some suggestions on how to be make my class lively and available.and sometimes, i think it is hard to control the whole class, that is to say, my class seemed disorder: there are some students who like talking, and some like listening to music and some even like sleeping. it really makes me headache to control and guide the class. hope you can give me some advice. thanks.

Welcome to mylot conquer!I am surprised to see a teacher here.It means mylot community is populated already by many types of people.
I remember my english teacher made us conduct stage plays and some sort of drama, and I think it was effective and fun too.You can also make your students recite their own poem at the front of the class. But these suggestions may appeal differently to different ages? What level are you teaching?Elementary, high school or college?

As a college student,I know that there is a majority of my classmates are not interested in english since they are involved in english course. They value english as a compulsory subject which help them pass the college entrance examination so they have never show inner passion in it,everything they are reading, writting, reciting are noting but the chip which could take an profound effect in their academic scores.
Even so,as an english teacher,it is aways your responsibility to arouse your students' interest in english.I know you have made enormous efforts to deal with this problem but you are depressed and helpless because it is much less efective than expected.I am totally understand.Do not lose your confidence and patience in your pupils.Just stick to your efforts and they will see your good intentions someday.Good luck!

You can try lots of group activities.. so all of your students can participate in class, games can really bring out their fun side. What English class are you teaching grammar or communications? Good luck with your teaching.

My sister is an enlish teacher in senior school and i think she can hold the whole class well. Maybe sometimes you should be strict with the students but sometimes you also can be easy-going. Interest is the best teacher to everyone. So i suggest you that try to make the boys and girls interested in enlish. You can play a graceful song when beginning the class ,or play some of english film part to them and so on.If the students have good performance, you can give them some rewards for excitation.

Being a teacher is like being a leader and for you to become a good leader, you become first a good follower and being a student is just like being a follower.
You can probably seek other teacher's techniques in teaching or seek other people's advice who are involved in the field of teaching not only the English language.
I am just a college student and I completely understand how you feel, the truth is that there are just really some students who are too lazy to listen and also there are just some teachers have poor teaching methods that make students find them boring.
Anyway, don't be disheartened, as long as you have the passion for teaching, you will be able to cope up with those issues. I suggest that you try different techniques in teaching, you can try tell stories or make class activities like games where in you will be able to integrate the English language.

Students , no matter how old they are,act out because they want to see your reation, when you react to them, they feel rewarded.Instead continue with your classes as you planned. eventually even the positive attention the student recieve from is peer will go away when they see that u arent going to do anything about it

Way back in Grade School and High School my teacher in English always have a strategy to get the attention of the class. In terms of games, He will group his students into 3-5. The teacher will give an Aim. In order to score, each student will answer the teachers question.
The winning group will have a prize. Those games involves part of the lesson or English concerns. At the end of the game, lesson is taught at the same time student are participated and enjoy the game.
I hope I share you a good strategy for your up coming Class.

I used to teach English in school too.:) How big is your class? What's the level you are teaching? I can't believe that your students dare to listen to music and sleep in class! I suppose they are not afraid of you?
Are you allowed to discipline your students? If yes, then maybe you could put some disciplinary measures in place to deal with students who sleep in class and so forth.
I think it's important to engage your students in order to get them interested in learning. Get them involved during lessons. Affirmations are important. I affirmed my students whenever they participated during lessons. As a result, they were eager to participate. When they gave wrong answers, I would tell them it was okay. When other students mocked or laughed at them for giving wrong answers, I would tell them sternly that it was unacceptable. By doing so, my students were generally unafraid to give wrong answers.
In addition, I think it's important to make your lessons interesting and lively. You could use teaching aids that can help liven up your lessons. Or you might want to incorporate acting or storytelling into your lessons. For example, you could get your students to tell stories (in front of the class) that relate to your lesson on a particular day. However, storytelling might not be helpful if you are teaching older children.
Your ability to establish a good rapport with your students is crucial. So, you might want to consider spending time with your students individually or in small groups. When I was teaching, I liked to spend time with my students. Usually, they would flock to me during recess. Even if I was marking worksheets then, I would stop when they came to me. I would try to find out about their backgrounds, their hobbies, what they liked and what they didn't like, and so forth. I showed genuine interest in them. I let them know I cared about them. I gave them (inexpensive) birthday gifts and got the whole class to sing 'Happy Birthday'.
Another thing that might be helpful is to have a rewards system in place (ie. if your school or your local education ministry allows that). Reward students who are attentive in class. Reward students for their participation. Reward students who do well. Your rewards need not cost you anything. For example, you could make something for your students. Or you can bring them on an excursion (that is fully paid for by your school) after exams or during school holidays (if it's not against your school rules and the rules of your local education ministry).
Children (including teenagers) are very smart. They can tell if a teacher is genuinely interested in teaching. They can tell if a teacher cares about them. In short, whatever you do must come from your heart.

I found that doing activities that were interacting or more involved made me grasp the material better. Try to get them to have fun with it and then it becomes easier for you to because they become more eager to learn. We sometimes acted out plays in our class and sometimes watched films of what we were reading about. Try finding a way to relate the material to the students. I hope this helps.

may your style of teaching is boring .. the best thing you can do is that also give them some tasks that inovlve movies etc .. for example our lecturer used to bring small clips of the different popular movies and used to show us it in the class .. and then she asks different questions from us regarding that clip .. so i think this the interesting way of teaching .. adopt this new innovative ways .. thanks
