I just don't understand College aged kids lately.

My daughter and her group of friends are college age. They range from 18 to 21. I've noticed something with them that I think is rude and strange. They like to call each other "fat" and other rude names.
For example, they can be out eating somewhere, and there might be one slice of pizza left and someone will grab it. The others will say "you're fat!" and then they'll all bust out into laughter. The first time I heard it, I thought someone was going to be told off for calling the other one fat. But they just laughed. Now that's what they do. They call each other "fat" or say "you're drunk" if they trip over something and other silly thing.
Has anyone else experience this?

I'm 21 and in the group of friends that I have, we never insult each other like that. I think it's just in certain groups of friends, things like that are accepted or normal.
It kind of reminds me of the song "Bosom Buddies" from the film "Mame":

The two women claim to be close friends, but insult each other throughout. I haven't seen the entire movie though, so I don't know how their friendship is in other scenes.
I think this type of insulting friendship (or as TVTropes.org refers to it "Vitriolic Best Buds") is commonplace in all age groups, not just young adults.
Now that I think about it, I guess I experience this with my older (27 years old) sister. We sometimes insult each other, but in a playful manner. She is also like this with her very best friend.

You may be right, and maybe I just notice it more with this age because I'm around them so much. People my age (46) at least in the ones in my circle it doesn't happen so much.

I've pretty much given up trying to figure out the youth of this nation or the world. And considering that I could be considered a part of that said youth of today when you really think about it, that is rather saying something. I think there might have been one time where I was with it but that time has really passed me by in many ways.
I find the youth of today, people being rude, to both others and their friends. Granted, it might seem light hearted to some people but it just seems rather strange to myself and others around me. I just shake my head a lot of things. There are times where I think that I was born in the wrong generation. I'll never understand my own age group. How sad is that?

I'm glad that at least you don't act as some in your age group do. I know that they are just getting away from their teens and into adults, but at some time you have to stop the rudeness and be more adult. That doesn't that you can't have fun with friends, but I don't think being hurtful is fun.
