Is there "good" in everyone?

You hear it a lot in the media and television that there is "good" in everyone, however do you believe that it is true?
Do you honestly believe that;
Murderers?
Rapists?
Child Abusers?
Thieves?
Are all of those "bad", or are they just good people in bad circumstances?
Don't forget that mental illnesses (depression, anxiety, schizophrenia) can have a huge effect on one's behaviour and state of mind. Is it possible that all who do wrong are simply a victim of their own illnesses?

Abnormal and exceptional people are always there. We could find positive traits in those people who fall in the normal category.

I do certainly agree with this to some extent, because I have experienced something which made me realise that maybe everyone has something inside them that just needs to be encouraged to come out and escape. I have just finished a degree, and there were times that I just thought that there was no way that I was going to be able to finish it because of the fact that the work was too hard, however I somehow managed to find the strength to be able to finish it, and because of this I do believe that we're all capable of much more than we think providing that we're given the chance to be able to shine.

All humans are born with the potential of being good or evil. I think we often become what we finally become because of the choices we made. However, because every human is a creature of the God of creation and thus embedded with some of the traits of God, we can always turn ourselves around by making other choices to right some things.

i like the idea that everybody is born a blank slate on which we can build anything that we like. Thinking about things like this truly makes me believe that we completely have the choice about the direction in which we can choose to take our lives, and it is certainly more about the choices that we make in life than it is about the way that we are born. We should make sure that we think very carefully about all of the choices that we make because everything that we do will have an effect on the rest of our lives.

It really makes me wonder about why people would choose not to do good when there were so many things that they could do in their lives to be able to help people. I have a friend who is not happy unless they're hurting someone, and they know exactly what they're doing. The number of arguments that they have caused on purpose is shocking, and it really makes me wonder whether I should be friends with them at all. I suppose some people just make the wrong choices, and everyone else just has to live with the consequences of that.

People are born different and can choose what they wanna be in the society. I think people are controlled by their inner trait, either good or bad. But remember no one is perfectly good and vice-verse, but the percentage of our domineering trait is what people rely on when rating us in these categories.

I think that everyone has a personality when they're born, so to an extent they don't really get to choose who they're going to be. But they can choose whether they use each of their personality traits for good or for bad- for example if you're an extrovert then you could either use that to be nice to people and make them feel included in your life, or you could use it to be horrible to people and turn into a bit of a bully. So nature has a lot to do with things, but there are certainly things that we can do to try and make sure that only our best traits come across.

yes obviously there are good habits in bad people and on the other hand their are also lots of good habits in the bad person .. my best friend has many bad habits but it s because hes such a nice person (the qualities which he has) i am not able to leave him alone .. i also have a friend that is really bad and is always involved in the bad illegal activites .. but the best quality he has is that he never lies to anyone .. so although he is bad he has a good quality .. so thatswhy every person has good qualities and similarly on the other hand some real bad qualities also .. we should compromise with this fact

I think that you're right, and that probably nobody is entirely good or bad. I am a good person on the whole, and I always try to do what is best for both myself and everyone around me at the time, however, I do know that I do some bad things. I have a bit of a problem keeping my mouth shut when somebody has told me a secret, and that can get me into a lot of trouble. I don't mean to cause trouble, I just forget and slip up, so that is my bad person habit because it can look to other people as though I am trying to cause trouble when that just isn't the case at all.

There's good in everyone. IF one hasn't been good, how are they supposed to know those are bad things, they have done? haha IF they are being taught that, murder, rape and abuse are good, then in their eyes, they are doing good things. SO u see, everybody's definition of GOOD, is different. Whatever is bad for us, might not be so in somebody's eyes. haha

Other than some mental illness or chemical imbalance, I think people can "choose" to do good if they want to. I personally don't believe that there is good in everyone but that there are choices that are good and bad. I make choices everyday. And I am faced with can I do good or bad today. I choose the direction I go and where some people say my choice is good, some others say it's bad. So I guess it's subjective really.

You're right when you say that most people do have a choice. I know some people who are horrible, and it makes me want to ask them why they behave the way they do. I think that a lot of people are horrible to others because they are jealous of them and they feel insecure, but they should talk to people about it rather than just being horrible to them, as I don't think that being nasty can solve anything. It makes the victims feel bullied, and I would imagine that it makes the bullies feel pretty guilty about it at the end of the day as well.

That is an interesting point. I think there are situations where people are victims of their own illnesses or situations but I also think there are people that are bad. I think that they choose if they are bad or not..there is always the potential or choice to go against the cycle. I do understand on a wider level now that cycles are hard for people to break sometimes but it is possible.

I think I am a bit naive to think that there is still 'good' among people. However they have lived their lives. The problem is, some choose not to do good, and just do the easy way out. Which sometimes mean a life of crime.
People can be victims of their own illnesses too. The crime is for other people surrounding them to not recognize and address this immediately.

I think that in the end, there is some good in everyone. However, its not to say that its going to take a lot longer to find the good in others than it is going to be others. The good is very deep down and perhaps it is shrinking for some throughout all time. You just wonder if there is a point where past victims become the victimizers as well and thus the good was destroyed for reasons.
Mental illness is a tricky thing. It obviously does exist. However just because something exists, it does not really mean that it is the catch all reason for all problems. It is rather a justification that can be used however. And it is a justification that can be abused. Still there are many reasons for even the most vile circumstances and actions in people. Well for some people, there are times where reasons tend to elude us.

I think being good or bad is all about choice. There is certainly good in us, as well as bad. Even Hitler or Polpot do good things. Doing wrong is not about being ill, you are in control of your own decision. Even if you're hijacked to doing a bad deed, it is still you who is responsible for doing such deed.

Maybe not all, but some might be a victim of their own illness. Maybe some people do bad because they just have no choice, but not because their ill. Some do bad just because they want it or maybe so greedy. But maybe, only maybe, that even if they all do bad with different reasons, they still have a good part in them. Who knows.. :)

i think everyone would like to think there is but with the types of people a lot of people wont consider it being a possibility. im thinking that some may have a little good in them because ive watched documentaries where the serial killer was a great father etc but that in NO way evens the score!
i would say they are a victim of their mental illness but if they know and are able to take medication yet choose not to then in my opinion they cant use that as an excuse

Hiya GR,
It is hard to believe that there could be good in People like that. I suppose it all depends on the Person they may have some good in them but perhaps we will never get to know about it.
If they have a mental illness difficult one this because where do you draw the line between they knew what they were doing and they did not know what they were doing and if the goodness they show is for real if you know what I mean.
A few of those horrific murder cases I have seen on the Television make me doubt of the goodness but I guess there must be some kindness in them.
Not really my place to say as I donĀ“t know those kind of People personally.

Yes, i firmly believe there is good in everyone. they might not show their good side to you. every person knows what's good and what's bad, inherently. stress, pain, adversity and mental illness can weaken someone's mind temporarily but once that is over, the person will repent anything wrong that he has done. they might be a victim but they will still have to bear the consequences- whether its jail or their own conscience that will haunt them.

At one point I would have said yes but now that I have lived some and have grown up, my answer is NO!
The reason for this is I think the person who is doing "bad" has turned away from feelings of empathy, love, kindness. They have no selfcontrol, fits of anger, rage, jealous, and act diabloic.
For example a man beats his wife, he clearly sees she's crying and cringing away from him and begs him to stop... He is in rage for some small insinficant reason. where's the tv remote, burned toast, to much salt in the meatloaf...
Someone that willingly hurts another for self gain is bad! Child molesters... they are hurting a child for selfish reasons...
I do believe there are good people and some seriously twisted bad people even Evil people!

Hi Gemma, I believe there is good in every single person. I have suffered with anxiety and depression over the years. I have learned when is a good time to be around people and when it' not. I know depending on my mood whether I should be in a social setting or at home. I have met a number of people over the years who have good and bad in them. Yet they choose to be nice when it suits them and evil when it suits them. But at the end of the day I believe everyone has goodness in them. It's a choice on what they put out there for people to see.

i think this question has been debated throughout the ages in theological, philosophical, socialogical, psychological circles, etc. personally, i recently pondered it in relation to hitler, and when i learned that hitler was a dog lover, wondered if that was a spark of hope and goodness within him, as i am a dog lover myself and have a great deal of respect for dogs as judges of character....then i read that hitler killed his poor(beloved) dog too. so, the question goes round again for me...being a christian however, i can't believe that anyone is completely "good" except God.
