or felt like being close to it? Personally I've had two experiences in which I thought I was going to die. Both times I was laying in bed when I woke up feeling completely paralyzed. Couldn't even move my mouth, just think. And when I began to think I noticed that I wasn't able to breathe (or thought I wasn't able to). I got a huge panic and tried to call for help but I couldn't. At some point I thought I was hovering up in the corner of my room. Strange that was. But of course I ''survived'', otherwise I won't be here lol. I don't know though how I ''came back'', the bad feeling that had lasted for a minute perhaps just vanished. In recent years such paralysises began to develop several times but I learned to block it somehow so it wouldn't evolve into the serious situation I've experienced before.
Have you also been or felt like being close to death? What did you experience, feel, see - what was it like ? Are you perhaps one of those ''lucky'' people who have had a so-called ''near-death experience'' (NDE) ?

That's a fascinating experience you had, although I understand it was frightening. I had heard of this sort experience many years and wanted to have it myself. So I imagined leaving my body for many nights and nothing happened. Then one day, it worked. At first I felt alarmed, but then managed to remind myself that I wanted this experience to see what it was like. I decided to put the light on in the bedroom, but my hand seemed to go straight into the wall. I could sort of get a sense or the concrete with wires buried inside it. Then I seemed to return, and could feel like electric currents running up and down my body. There was one other similar experience where I left the house and saw people outide, but after that it stopped happening. _Derek

Thank you for responding. Yes, I was aware at the time of the phenomonon of astral travelling and bought a book by Robert Monroe at the time. He wrote of being able to do this at will, and I did try for a while, but didn't get anywhere at all with it. NDE would be quite scary I would imagine. When I had my heart attack about 5 years ago, the pain lasted for around 6 hours, because I didn't think it was a heart attack. I remember thinking that I was going to die at one point, because I just couldn't stand up at all. Because I have practised meditation for many years, I decided that the best thing to do was to meditate and focus on my pain and stop fighting it, whilst I was waiting for an ambulance. My fear of dying completely disappeared and I felt it was OK to die if it was my time. As I think of this now, I find it fascinating, but there again, I guess I have dealt with people with all kinds of fears and anxiety in my work as a therapist. _Derek

I do remember this happening to me in my sleep a few times years ago. The funny thing about what you are describing here is that I heard someone else describing exactly that on a science radio program that I listen to every Thursday morning. The caller said that he woke just as you did and could not move.
The radio host who is a medical doctor and somewhat of a science guru here in Australia called Dr Karl said that it was a type of dream state. Apparently when we are in a strong dream, our body goes into a type of paralysed state and sometimes our conscious mind can wake up from a dream only to find that our body is still in this paralysed state and we freak out. Do you remember if you were dreaming beforehand?
There have been 3 times in my life when I thought I might die. Once was when I destroyed my car by spinning it sideways through a heap of trees. I definitely thought it was all over for a few seconds as I was trying to gain control of the car and saw trees coming towards me. Another time I had to swim for my life after my jet ski sank in rough seas and another time I was caught by my jacket, hanging off the edge of a chairlift at the snow for about 15 minutes. I finally fell, but only received minor injuries.

I do have an experience of nearly dying too. I have a problem with accumulation of phlegm and mucus in my lungs. This, in turn, blocks the air passages of my lungs and prevents me from breathing normally. There was a time during the night when I can't seem to breathe anymore. Every breathe I did was a struggle. I do one big heavy breath just to get a small supply of oxygen to my body. It was really scary. Good thing I didn't panic and just keep on trying to breathe for life and calling for the attention of our household. Good thing I was rushed into a nearby hospital and was given oxygen supply and helped out with nebulizer, a medication in the form of mist to dispel the phlegm and mucus in the lungs. I really don't have asthma that's why that was a sudden incident for me. Now I am cautious on my breathing.
