There is nothing to be ashamed of if you didn't pass your exams. There are a variety of reasons why you did fail and all you can do is contemplate on them and try hard for the next time. Your feelings of failure are understandable since you seem to be a good student but don't let those feelings get better of you becuase feeling of failure cannot and will not make you less of a student than your roommate.
As for your roommate, he has a right to brag becuase he did pass his exams but exams are not exactly an indicator of intelligent nor wisdom. Congratulate him if you want but do tell him that the second chance of doing the exam can also give you the opportunity to have a better score than what he got. Your resolve to be better is more potent compared to what you have before taking the exam.
Personally, I don't know whether your roommate and yourself is in a competitive mode when it comes to exams. Granted that I'm a competitive student, but I never allow myslef to indulge in other's misery or be in a competitive streak with everybody. The main thing is you do your best and if you come at the top of the list is just an extra incentive for you to go on and have the ball rolling. Just be thankful that you passed (or you will pass), there is no need to prove yourself to others but there is a need to prove and validate yourself.
My advice is to stop listening to others and start studying. No matter what otehr people say about your exam and grades, you are the ultimate judge of yourself and your performance. Acknowledge otehr p3eople's work and worth but don't let them affect you or allow you to be belittled or disrespected.

Don't be discouraged, ok. Just revise your schoolwork and study hard. Don't let one failure affect your confidence. Gd luck to you!:)
