How did your cats get their name?

Our oldest cat is named Boots. At the time my eldest Daughter was really into Dora the Explorer and Boots was one of the names she could say. Then the subsiquent siblings from other litters are Princess socks (as princess anything is popular with lil girls, and socks because it's along the lines of Boots) and Tootsie (of course falls into the course of something to do with feet and sounds cute).

Twilight and Eclipse.. after the movies (and books) of course, and they're black cats.

Socks and Tootsie are both black, though Tootsie has a patch of white on her chest hardly noticable and a more noticable patch between her hind legs of all places.

Twilight also has a patch of white on her chest, and a few stray white hairs here and there. Eclipse is pretty much all black, and super super fluffy.

Socks is all black too. Though in a way seems silly to be called socks but I couldn't think of anything else that went with her older brother's name, Boots, at the time.

You never know! Though I had always wondered wouldn't it be interesting to go thru vet records and check out all the names of all the pets or even inquire on the very odd names they've encountered during their practice.

usually with mine it's manner,a distinguishing feature,or just random. 3 of my current came with names as one was my uncles and two others eviction rescues. one of my youngest is named bandit because she has a black mask face marking. ..and she'll garbage dive if you don't keep an eye on her..

Let me see..Tibby was my very first cat and she was a tabby and white. I was too young to have any impact on her name but I remember she was very cute. The next two were sisters and the tortie and white was called Chloe (sometimes Ollie or Olz) and the black and white semi-long-haired cat was called Thebes. I have absolutely no idea how these names came about but I do know we had a laugh coming up with them. The next cat was Jodie, although I found out after I named him (after Jodie Foster) that he was actually a BOY but the name stuck. We would call him The Boy quite often, for obvious reasons. Next came Klimmy but she was originally named Klinsmann, after the German footballer, who was playing for Spurs at the time. Mum said Klinsmann was a silly name so Klimmy replaced it. The two cats Mum has now (mother and daughter) are called Ellie and Soxx. The latter looks like she has white socks on but I don't really know how the Ellie name came about, it just suited her. I call her Ellie-Babes quite a lot. As for my own cat. She is named Flojo, after the deceased female, American runner. She got her name as she tried escaping from her carrier at break-neck speed when we brought her home (100 miles away from Mum's house...we got her from the same shelter as Ellie and Soxx) and it was funny watching my husband trying to catch her to put her back in it. So there you have it..not quite a nutshell but you did ask. Haha!

I don't think those are too odd at all. Sometimes names just sound right or fun. I recognized the name FloJo. I also did not realize she had passed away.

We have a coat that it black and white that we got a few years ago for our daughter for christmas. When we got the cat we were told it was a girl so we let our daughter choose the name. She named the cat cookie because it looked like an oreo. Later on we find out that the cat is not a girl lol. The cat already responds well to cookie so we kept the name as is. Kinda funny name for a male cat!

Don't you hate that when the cat you got is a defferent gender than what you were told?!?! We had that with our 2nd cat, she was supposed to be a "he", which would explain why our male was trying to hump "him" cause it "he" was really a "she" good thing she's got a gender neutral cat name of Socks. We all forget to proof our comments from time to time, especially when we are close to pay out we try to get as many posts done not realizing our errors.

well we have three cats: Popeye, Falcor (formerly Boots) and Orion. Popeye got his name because when he was a kitten his eyes were too big, they looked like they were popping out of his head. So Pop-eye became his name. Falcor got his name boots because he has white on his paws that looks like boots, but we renamed him Falcor because well whats a better name than the luck dragon from never ending story? and Orion, we just adopted and that was his name when we got him.

Lets see... The recent cats have been thematic... for example, if we get a family, we try to name them in the same "grouping" so when we trapped the feral family, there was The Mama and her kids Elmer and Emily and then, because there were 3 kittens, we named the black one for Elizabeth all from the Tomorrow People TV show. We had previously named Timus for someone from that show, but that was because I was so taken with Philip Gilbert when we met him the previous May. When we got Flower and Blossom, Flower had the name, so I just threw out Blossom for another name. Then, when we got the two yellow brothers and their Siamese colored sister, we named the Siamese for my Chinese co-worker, May and since the game ping pong opened Red China, we named them Ping and Pong, since they were really hard to tell apart for a while (actually still are)

my cat is called ceaser, he acts like it and all king of the house. He's my boy, unless he's being a pain and i say he's his dads son. It took us a few days to think of a good name for him, he wasnt really named after anything. Thou he was a guts before, apart from eating his tinned food for breakky. he also ate part of my wrap, bacon, a olive, cheese, and then a bit of chocolate.

Certainly wants to be treated like royalty indeed. One or maybe even two of my cats have taken off with a porkchop off my kids plate hence one of the cats is nicknamed porkchop *LOL*

I like cats very much. I usually name them as per their colors. If it is white, then I call it "xiao bai"(means white), if it is yellow, then I name it "a huang" (means yellow).

That's true many are named based on their coloration.

One of my cats came to me as an adoption. Her existing name was Sophie, and we let her keep it, but I thought that it was a little boring, so I gave her a big kitty name and if she had a birth certificate it would have read "Sophistikitty" Then we had Fabio, a black cat that our two daughters named. I wasn't excited about it but it stuck. When we got him a friend who was a white cat with one blue eye and one green eye, I also gave that cat a super name: Fabio's Feisty Fancy Feline and she is Fancy. I like having fun with pet names. My poodle's name is Sycamore Island Ginger Take the Cake. I call her Ginger. Hmmm, maybe I should start a pet naming business! LOL

Hmm... pet naming business? Does your vet know the animals by their long names or by their shortened?

We get names of our cats based on their charms, behavior and color. It is amazing that once a cat got it names they really follow you on that name given to them. i have a cat named Darling she is so charm that can be kissed and embraced by all. She can even pose for picture taking.

My daughter named both our cats. The elder one is scamper and I don't know where she got that one from? I have to say I feel a bit silly standing out the front calling scamper out at the top of my voice! My other cat is called Kiwi. I think my daughter got that name from the vets dog, also called Kiwi, but she denies that.

Our cats were recuse cats from the RSPCA so they came with names. We kept the names the same as even if we changed them they would remain on the list with the RSPCA names given to them, so since we liked the cats names anyway it didn't really matter

Hmmm four cats ; choco (because she likes chocolate), pshyco (because hes the craziest of them all), Aso, (because hes the assoscial cat that likes no one) and mimi (because my girlfriend is cute and so is this kitten and so i took my 'loveydovey' name to this cute kitten and when calling one of them they both react which is funny in a way).

Sometimes I just know the first time I look at them. "Jasmine" is an example. Usually I decide based on their color or markings. "Cookie" looks like a chocolate chip cookie. But there are times when I keep changing a name because nothing seems to fit right. At that point, I give up and give them a common name, like "Ginger".
