Adding emoticons to avoid misunderstanding

I have this habit of adding emoticons to avoid misunderstanding. Sometimes I joke around but I don't want other my lot users to misunderstand it. Or worst, for thats statement to to be offensive. Sometimes, when I read a post, I'm not sure if it is a joke but emoticons can tell you a different story. There are some posts that I consider not very comfortable. But the emoticons help me to understand the what the person is trying to imply. Are you fond of using emoticons? What do you think about emoticons? Kindly share your thoughts on this.

Using the emoticon for me conveys that although I am not agreeing and or opposing a members opinion, that I am not upset either. Hoping they also understand that we do not always have to agree. I also agree that using the emoticons can avoid misunderstanding between the differences with cultural understanding of what jokes are. Therefore, using the is way of conveying that I am not laughing at you but with you.

You are very right that emoticons help us convey our feelings and we don't want that others should misunderstand us. I love using emoticons and I would request mylot to increase the limit on using emoticons from three to five.

Hi dpk! I definitely agree with you there. I hope they can increase the number of emoticons here. I'm enjoying it so far. But I hope they can create more, it would be more fun.

Hello Chiwasaki, I agree and feel that without emotions response/comment looks incomplete. As here we cannot see each other but just can talk by writing and using emotions while writing is like you are showing to the person how you feel when you are responding. I always like to use full quota of emotions on every response/comment that way i can convey that i am happy or sad.hehehe

Words somehow feel empty. You can share your happiness with your friends with these emoticons. I hope we can use more than three emoticons though.

Hello chiwasaki, Yes, I am very fond of using smileys and other emoticons to help convey emotions and meaning. I use it when replying on texts, tweeting, and commenting here at myLot just to avoid misunderstanding. :)

Yes, I am fond too of using emoticons! They make my responses livelier and interactive. I do agree with you too about the use of emoticons to emphasize or express a certain feeling that can't be conveyed by the mere words that we write. Also, I use those emoticons a lot when I am kidding and fooling around in here! Maybe due to the visual spatial side of humans that emoticons are popular as a means of communicating and expressing ones thoughts and feelings. When I first started here in myLot, the first thing I tried to look for are the emoticons that I can use.

i'm not very fonding of using the emoticons.. i'm not really sure why, but i like the points you raised about it making discussions and comments livelier.. i hadn't thought of it that way.. i see it more as a way to explain you were joking, or being sarcastic etc but i guess they are more appealing to the eye.

Hi chiwasaki! Yes, I am fond of using the myLot codes. That's why I posted a discussion which encourages everyone to use the myLot codes more. It's a good way to express ourselves better and to avoid misunderstandings which can easily happen because we are all not fluent in English here. Even the Americans are not fluent with English themselves. And words are very rich in meanings so sometimes, people tend to misunderstand each other. Using these myLot codes will help us express what we really mean what we really feel.

I barely evern use them on here because i really do forget about them and would rather just type away then using the emoticons. When it comes to text messaging on my cell phone i use them because it is easier because its right in front of me and i can press the button on my cell phone on here i forget there over to the lef thand side to use and i dont ever use them.

I often used them here. There's a lot of members here coming from different part of the world. One statement might cause a misunderstanding. So I used this emoticons to avoid confusion.

I do not think I have ever used an emoticon here on MyLot at all. First off, while I am writing, I do not want to be interrupted. So, I will just use words to get my point across. And if I am joking, I will just write it out. I can understand your view point about them, and I do see lots of them, thats cool. But I will stick to writing.

yeah me too when chatting or texting a friend, and it seems like offending in his/her side i always add one of this emoticons after the last word :D :D :P :)) or 'haha' and other variations in the end just to ease the atmosphere. Actually i can say offending things and sarcastic remarks without the other party detecting it by adding emoticons.

Yeah, its allright. I personally love adding them myself. Besides avoiding confusion it also gives an impression that you don't have ''a stick up your behind'', if you'd excuse me, but rather that you are a funny, normal person.

Yes,this is a good habit. Having the emotion icons can avoid the misunderstandings. As you know, not everybody has a good sense of humor:) Unfortunately Mylot only allows you to use three emotion icons in the post. I love China

yes, emoticons help us to express our true feelings. sometimes we cannot put our feelings in to words. sometimes we cannot write about our feelings, but with emoticons, we can simply add one to show how we feel.

Yes, I do add emoticons to avoid misunderstanding, especially when I want the commentors to know how I am pleased or displeased of their comments...

I’ve never been a massive fan of emoticons.. I don’t mind when you just type a : and a ) and the smiley comes up.. but actually having to deliberately put the emoticon in has never been something I am fond of using.. but after reading all the comments raised by others, I can see why they would be beneficial.. it has helped me to realise when someone is being serious or joking.. for example the other day I got a response in my emails, and there was no emoticons showing in the email, and I thought the person was being quite rude.. until I realised they had the little eye-rolling emoticon on the actual comment :)

Well, I think emoticons are good because they are graphic images that can make more interesting and lively your comments. You can express your ideas on a nice way. E.g.

I love using emoticons! they add feeling and emotion to your words. The problem with typing text is that you can't express specific emotions like irony or sarcasm but the emoticons are here to help! They reflect the emotions you're feeling about the particular discussion and you really don't want to give the reader a wrong idea. The emoticons really help and I wish Mylot had even more emoticons because there re heaps of more emotions people can feel and express here. Your emotions and change and lighten up another person's emotions.
