I do, and today I got carried away while I was cleaning and was talking ot my elderly client about her past which was really interesting and forgot to watch the time and spent an extra 15 minuties in her house! Made me late for my next job, but I didn't mind as this lady doesn't get to see many people. I really have to watch the time as alot of my clients are eldery and love to talk and listen, its a part of my job that I really do like as it makes me feel useful but I have to be careful or else I would be there all day. Luckily my next client was very understanding.

I like to listen to older folks talk about their lives and interesting things from when they were young. I used to love my grandmother's stories. Glad your next job wasn't upset that you were late. I like freelancing for myself so I don't have to be on a schedule and do as I please when I want to do it.

I like listening ot older peoples stories, they are so intersting and you can learn so much by listening. My next jobs normally don't mind if I'm a bit late as they know I shall still spend the same amount of time with them and chat with them. Although I do have set times to clean my clients I do tend to like to freelance a bit, I laways tell my clients that not ot worry if I'm 15 mins late as I will still be coming and if for any other reason I'm going ot be any later then I'll phone them and let them know that I'm going ot be running that much later.

I could spend so much more time with them. I did think about setting up a talking business, involving getting paid by clients to go and chat to them and have a cup of tea, but don't know how it would actually work. Or how I could set it up in a safe way. Say £5 for our hours chat... bit daft reallyy, just thinking out loud. But it would be good really if there was a way it could work. I would be ace at it!!!

I do like to talk but there sometimes where the conversations are over that I don't know what else to do. We just stare around and come up with little conversation to keep it going but sometimes it doesn't work. I do prefer to listen though better than me doing the talking because my conversations are pretty fast and when others speak it keeps going on a good amount of time.

My conversations can be pretty fast as well sometimes, the older people tend to take more time talking to you. sometimes I'm fast just because there is so much I want to get in and also not ot forget anything. It is awful when you just have to stare around as its all dried up, I try not ot let that happen.

Yes I think we do all tend to talk a bit more if we haven't been around people for a few days, hence the eldery do seem to have much more ot say and ask about whats been gonig on in the outside world. I try to ask them waht they watch on the telly as that is an easy topic of talking and to discuss

I don't like to talk. It takes a lot of effort for me to talk for so long. I tried to change, because it is really a good thing if you love to talk, but I can't change it. I was born this way, so I guess I can't change it But I am a good listener.
@Anne18 (11029)
29 Oct 11
We are all born very different, which is very good as it would be awful if we were all the same, just thing all talking and no listening!!! You don't want to change unless you really want to change because that is the way you are meant ot be, I used to talk a lot when I was a girl and people used ot laugh at me, not unkindly as I wanted to be a nurse and they said that I talked far too much!!! But talking ot clients etc plays a big part in the line of work

Oh dear! You have touched a sensitive spot. I am very talkative but my habIt of talking and giving a patient ear to people got me plenty of friends, clientele and good will. Now I am not too active professionally and I miss all thta.I want to reduce my habitof talking and I don't know how I am going to improve.Mylot is one great way because here I talk to unseen people, friends with whom there is never likely to be any scrap.

Glad that you like talking, you should learn to be a bit forceful and finish your sentences, it can be hard sometimes and I do suffer from the same problem as you with some friends.

I'm no talker, I'm more of a listener and almost all my friends are talkers. They're love to blabber on about something while I just listen and sometimes comment on what they're saying. My Mum loves to talk too and sometimes she talks a little too much while on the computer and I just kinda ignore her Talking is great, it's a great way to relieve the awkward silence and start a warm conversation even if the other person isn't very talkative. It's sweet to talk on your job, makes your clients feel involved.
@Anne18 (11029)

Hi Anne I too love to talk . If the subject is interesting and I think I can add my knowledge I would love to talk with friends and relatives face to face or on the phone . But it may take place only at my leisure . At work I am serious. I never waste time taking when I am busy with some work whether at home or at my work place .

Yes, i do but not all the time. I guess it depends on the topic also that.
@Anne18 (11029)
29 Oct 11
Yes it can depend on the topic, if its a topic we know about we can put lots into the talking, if it something we don't know much about we can listen and ask questions so we can then learn more about that subject ready for the next time

Absolutely yes! I'm talkative but in a modest and with sense. I like to talk with people who has wide range of understanding and with knowledge. Especially those people who business minded. I like sharing ideas and views with people whom I know who have sense to talk with.
@Anne18 (11029)

I like to share ideas and views with other people, its how we all learn about things isn't it? Its good to talk with people who have a wide range of understanding and knowledge as we can share ideas and learn from each other and also have a very good banter

Oh, I especially like to talk with older people. I would have a problem leaving them if we were in a discussion. I think it is a wonderful service you do as you not only clean for them but you become a friend.
@Anne18 (11029)
29 Oct 11
Yes sometimes it is a problem leaving, I have still been talking as I have been going out the door as I have spent too much time there, they are normally ok about it as they know I have to get on. I never let my last client know that they are the last as I would be there all day, I let them think I've to go to another client or I have to be home for the children coming home from school.

I administer some alms houses with 28 residents most of whom are in their late 70s and 80s. A few older and a few younger. I watch the carers come and go. The best ones will always give a few minutes extra. But there is one who has yet to give her charge her lunch as she is supposed to and has never spent more than 7 minutes with her. I know this because I have timed her. Of course I have enquired exactly what her function is and said that I was surprised at how little time she takes to do it. But the NHS who oversee the care package do nothing. Grrr.
@Anne18 (11029)
29 Oct 11
Thats not so good, if you do a job like that you should be able to chat a bit, even if you finish the job quicker than you think thats an extra bit to chat. I also think on a job like that you have to make time allowances for these little things as you never know how long you will actually be doing things, sometimes you are quicker others slower, I always tell my clients not ot worry unless I'm 15 mins late and if I'm going ot be any later then I'll phone them.

Your discussion reminds me of my job in the home health care team. I went from to house to house and I visited many different patients every day. Sometimes it was hard to leave their homes because they were lonely and they didn't have other people to talk to. I enjoyed talking to of my patients, and I was often sad that I wasn't able to stay a little longer. I enjoyed listening to my patients thoughts and experiences, but I also had to think about the next people on my list so I wasn't able to talk as much as I wanted.
@Anne18 (11029)
29 Oct 11
Yes it can be hard to leave there homes as they are so lonely, I now always make sure I have my cup of tea on the go, I learnt the hard way that if you sit down and drink your cup of tea it is so much harder to leave. Also they seem to take for ever to make the cup of tea as well. Yes we do have to think of the next people, they are normally understanding as they don't want you ot be too late for them, but then there are the selfish ones as well.... well they are not really selfish, just want you to stay longer
