Why is there a polygamist reality show on television?

I don't understand, if polygamy is supposed to be against the law, why is it allowed to be on television? These days it's really difficult to watch quality shows on television. It seems that it's all based on what makes more money and not providing quality television. I personally think these men just want to have their cake and eat it too. Either that or they are just very insecure. I don't understand why these women feel that they have to share a man. Why is it that I never hear of a women having multiple husbands? And why is it that these women each have so many kids? I love being a mom to my 4 kids but I'm not trying to make a career out of it. I think that perhaps they have so many kids purposely to populate the country with more future polygamist. If that's the case then, do they believe that our normal way of one husband and one wife is wrong. What are your thoughts about polygamists? And the media trying to make them famous?

The man featured in the show is only actually married to ONE of the women. The others are technically girlfriends - but, as is done with common law marriages, they refer to each other as being a spouse when they are not actually married. The show doesn't bother me, but I don't watch it either..

Well I haven't watched the show, I heard about it on a talk show, what bothers me is all the media about how unlawful it is yet, it's okay to show their lifestyle to everyone. Television is bad enough as it is we don't need to expose our kids to more confusion. I have four kids and I don't have cable for this very reason while it does have some decent channels, there's just too much junk on it.

Polygamy is not against the law. Bigamy is. As far as I can see if everyone involved in the situation is happy with it there is no problem. No doubt they do not mind if some people wish to live in our traditional one male one female arrangement so why should we care how they wish to live their lives. If you do not like it on TV don't watch it

Who is Dr Phil and what are his or her qualifications that entitle him or her to make comments about the law. I think that if you are going to talk about legal matters you should at least qualify you postion. Maybe he or she did I don't know maid angela BA Law (Hons)

I've only watched his show a few times I think he is a psychologist. He had a polygamist family on his show and he told the man, it's against the law and the man agreed with him. I'm stating my personal opinion about what I heard on TV whether or not he's got law credentials is another discussion. Also, when I first heard of polygamists it was on the news, where a man was being arrested for polygamy this was a couple of years ago. This man had like 50 wives or something like that, and they all lived in a compound away from society. Before then I had no idea such a thing existed and it seemed very creepy and sickening to me and so that is why I'm against it and don't think it should be on TV.

I don't watch it, I was watching The Dr. Phil show and he said that it is against the law. I know that there is a lot of different lifestyles out there that seem weird to me and I have no trouble accepting that fact. It's a free country everyone is entitled to live how they like, but I don't need to hear about it and see it on regular TV, they should keep it on cable only and that's my opinion. I don't watch TV very often but when I do, I would like to enjoy it.

I have often wondered this very same thing. I think what draws their viewers to this kind of programming is the thrill of it being a taboo (forbidden) subject. If the networks weren't making money for its sponsors by showing it, I doubt that it'd still be on tv. I personally wouldn't watch it as I can't imagine any religion being ok with allowing more than one wife at a time lol. (And, just joking here, but this must be a religion that was founded by men...if it was founded by women, then maybe there'd be women having multiple husbands and not the other way around lol.) From what I understand, the man legally marries his first wife, then all the rest are married to him in a church sanctioned service. I also believe I've heard that not all Mormons believe in the multiple marriage belief, only the older order Mormons. Still, I wonder what their kids think of their Dad (or Mom) for being in this kind of marriage, especially when it's against the law.

Who ever is in charge of which shows are allowed on the air needs to be fired because they're definitely not do a good job. I completely agree with you, but I had no idea this was a Mormon belief. I have heard of Mormons before but I thought they were kind of the same as the Jehova witness. I thought the polygamist had a religion of their very own that I never heard of. I wouldn't watch the show either but can imagine just how many unsupervised kids out there watching and thinking it's ok if they do the same. I don't think their kids would really see anything wrong with their parents lifestyle, if it was all they were exposed to, to them it would be the norm.

It would be interesting to see a show with a woman with multiple husbands.
