Hi siliguri,
I do not know about the technical side in case of overcharging battery but I would like to share one incident which I read in newspaper in last month. A boy who left his mobile for charging in the whole night and in morning when he see his mobile is switched off he tried to open the mobile and check what happened to the battery. Unfortunately the battery exploded and he lost one of his precious eyes. He was in the hospital for further treatment and it is his bad luck to check the battery (I can’t blame this boy because we all do the same when the time of need).
You take care of your mobile and make sure that charge your mobile only for the needed time. Precautions are always better.

I have also heard about this incident of exploding of battery many of the persons got injured badly. People also say that don't talk on cell phone while it is charging doing that is very dangerous.
It is always nice to see you in my discussion..

I'm not really sure if it can make a significant damage on the cellphone. But what I noticed is that if my phone is mostly in silent mode, the battery seems to run out low easily. That's why I usually drain the battery if the it already low battery.

I think you need to change yours phone's battery.
It is impossible to overcharge a battery. There is a chance of overcharging only if you take the battery and charge it seperately. If the charger is provided by the phone's manufacturer then there is no worry of overcharging. You can make best use of your battery by fully charging it.
If the charge runs out quicky, replace the battery and avoid charging the battery frequently.
