My fierce dog is afraid of thunder, rain and wind

I have a very fierce dog who always barks angrily when there are other people around aside from our family. Surprisingly, she is so sweet and very friendly to us. She's the complete opposite of my other dog who is very sweet to all our visitors.
Then I just noticed since its rainy season here, every time that she hears the rain, wind or thunder, she always go under the bed. She usually sit in the chair beside me when I'm doing my MY Lot thing. Then if its raining, she usually looks at the window and observe the curtain moving because of the wind. And when the rain really pours hard and the strong wind blows inside my room, she hurriedly go under my bed. Not to mention if there's a thunder as well.
Is your dog afraid of something? Kindly share any similar experience.

i have an old dog who does the same thing only maybe worse.
I bought thru a site,,,,,,,,,,,,dont remember the name, but a thing call a THUNDER SHIRT and it really works!!
Just type it into your browser and you will find them.
I love the one I got my dog. she used to be a total mess even before the storm and I didn't even know there was one coming...so now when she does this, I put on tht thunder shirt and she calms right down.
Now, it does take a while I learned but it does work.........
And, don't feel bad because my bet is about 75% of dogs do this...
hugs, quita

I just sent a comment and it didn't go thru but believe me you will love the thunder shirt. my dog was nervous before we even knew a storm was on its way.
She'd pace back and forth, lay down, get up , go to the bedroom and then back and drool all over...she made me nervous...
So I found the Thunder shirt and it's worth every penny...
You will need to give it time tho,,,,and it does work...it only takes about 15 or so minutes for the effect to happen.
My girl, dog :) is now a calmer dog except for my vacuum cleaner...I think it hurts her ears.......but we are working on that.
Do try the thunder shirt. I feel you will be very pleased with it...
hugs, quita

Thunder shirt, sounds interesting. I'm not sure if it is available in our country. I'll probably check on that as well.

I haven't heard about this thunder shirt. I've done some research and they claim it works. I think if it is true, this piece of cloth is the greatest discovery in this field in decades!
How did your dog act before using the thunder shirt?
Is the change so radical as they claim on their site?

My pug, Berny can also bark at other people, especially people he does not know. He used to be much worse, but I have tried to socialise him as much as possible,it has helped.
What do you do when she is afraid? I know there are cd's with sounds og thunder etc. you can buy to get your dog to be familiar with theese sounds that scare her.

She's shaking whenever she hear the thunder. When she hear the rain and strong winds. She will go under the bed and stay there until the rain is gone.

Hi chiwasaki!
I think most dogs are afraid of thunder. We used to have a dog named Pocholo who used to hide under the bed when there's a thunderstorm. He was not fierce though, but there wasn't much he was afraid of except thunder.
Now for our present dog, Max, I have not observed anything that he is afraid of. There's been a thunderstorm he had experienced but he was never hiding or anything. He is also not that fierce but he does bark to people he doesn't know. But he just barks. Sometimes I wish I can train him to bite people with the wrong intention.

That is so amazing! I wish I can teach our dog that kind of trick. I always get frustrated when Max just let those cats pass him by without even a single bark or a growl. Sometimes, I even think he's scared of bigger dogs because he does not bark at them when they enter our premises or steal his food.

Once there's a rooster fly into our garage. Since I hate rooster, I told me dog "Chiwa attack", just like a Pokemon master will tell his Pokemon. Surprisingly my dog runs towards the rooster and barks at it fiercely. Whenever there's a chicken that flew nearby, she will look at me as if waiting for my command "Chiwa attack".

I don't remember my dog being afraid of anything. He was a blue healer and was one heck of an animal. He eat the most grotest stuff and had the most horrible farts. He bit the mailman several times. Now that might be something he was afraid of. Uniforms! He guards us and was a very good friend.

I feel sorry for the animal shelters employees when they jailed him twice for biting the mailman.

Our little dog, Chloe, has been timid since the time that we brought her home. She will bark at her own shadow if we would let her. Well, she is certainly doing a lot better about people in the last several months. However, there is this one little boy that lives up the street that she just does not like. She will bark continually from the time that he knocks on the door until the time that he leaves the house. I don't know what it is about him that she doesn't like, but she is afraid of him.

My dog doesn't like 3 of our neighbors. She usually bark at them when she sees them. They are friend of ours but they said that probably the reason why dogs are always angry at them is because they have eaten dogs before.

My previous dog was terrified by loud noises, no matter if they were only thunders or fireworks. She used to go hide in the bathtub. That was the only place she felt safe. I used to put there a blanket for her so that her stay there to be more comfortable.
The dog I have now is OK with thunderstorms, wind and rain. I was so glad when I first saw her sleeping without any problem during a thunderstorm! She was sleeping with her tummy up, feet in the air (her favorite position of sleeping) without being aware of what was happening outside.
I can't say she's afraid of anything. She doesn't like when other dogs bark at her but I wouldn't say this is because of fear.

I love it when my dog sleeps in that position. Tummy up and feet in the air. When she's sleeping in that position, we usually take pictures and videos.

I have never had a dog that wasn't afraid of thunder, that and high sharp noises. Rain though, most of the dogs loved to run out and play in the hot summer rain and get all dirty, run inside and shake themselves dry inside. Only severe howling winds would frighten them otherwise they would just ignore it. I think all dogs have their own personality and way of dealing with fear. I have had dogs that would allow anyone in to the garden if we were home, unless it was at night, but if we were not home not even people they knew were allowed in.

Your dog is very smart. A very good guard dog specially if he's alone there. My dog is like a guard dog as well but we consider her as part of our family.

Haha exactly, that's what I'm really trying to say. My dog is very fierce to humans but she's afraid simple things like wind and rain. But still I love my dogs, they are loving and sweet.

I had this dog once and I remember one day when someone was shooting off fireworks she ran into the other dog's cage. This cage was smaller than she was and she still went in and curled up in a ball. It was so funny to watch! She was a full three inches taller than the beagle and she still fit into that cage.

Hi daeckardt1! That must be really funny to see. Probably she panicked and wants to find a good spot as soon as possible. Good thing your dog was able to go out of the cage after fireworks.

I cover her ears if there's a thunder as well. But somehow it is not enough, she hide under the bed. Then she will look up as if scared to hear another thunder.

Dogs are like human beings. If it barks fiercely, it does not mean that it is not afraid of anything. We humans have a higher sense of comprehension, and that is the reason why we are not afraid of things like thunder. However, dogs have lower intelligence. There are still so many other things that they are afraid of.

My dog is mostly afraid of loud sounds. Almost every thing that produces loud sounds, my dog is already afraid of that. She's just not afraid of people shouting because she will definitely bark at them.

I agree with you. She's just fierce to strangers, totally fierce. But when it comes to loud sounds, she became really scared. Dogs have sensitive ears, she probably can't take that loud sounds.

Fe years ago I had lovely black sausage dog called Alma. She was lovely and fun but close to New Year Eve she always become sick. She was afraid of fireworks. She was shaking like jelly and she use to jump to the bath. We use to go to the vet before fireworks season and receive some tranquilizers for her just to keep her more calm.

I dont had dogs with me but some dogs are there barking in the streets. Its true that dogs are afraid about thunder and wind. They always barking in the nights as i cant sleep with those sounds. But when its raining those dogs cant come outside there is quiet silence without any disturbance. As they are not interested to be in rainy waters and hearing thunders.

My dog is not afraid of rain but only with strong rain. I remember about 6 years ago, I was in our garage while raining. My dog is with me as if we are both taking a bath in the rain.

I have a 6 year old Golden Retriever. She isn't really afraid of anything. She is like me, doesn't get effected by storms and seems very relaxed when it rains out. Your dog just has bad weather anxiety. I work at a veterinary hospital and we have clients whose dogs are the same way. The vet can prescribe a calming medication if it becomes a problem with your dog. You would just give her the medication right before it rains, etc. With barking at other people that she doesn't know, that is common. She is just being very protective of you and your family. My dog also barks at other people she doesn't know. Because she is protecting me. Be thankful that she is very protective, in case you really need the protection one day! Dogs are very smart animals! That is why I love them so much! :-)

Hi jterrock! I definitely agree with you. Dogs are very smart animals and loving as well. I love my dog so much that is why, as much as possible, I always stay at her side during bad weather. I hugged her tight so she will fee secured and I enjoy hugging my dog. It is very relaxing.

My dog is not afraid of anything, He just ignores noises, the only time he would bark if he hears the post man,or if somebody is at the door.
I have a suggestion for you: when you see him afraid,or you hear a thunder, redirect his attention with a treat that he likes. It might work, but as in everything to do with training you need patience. Also if you are nervous or scared they feel it and they will be too!.So a deep breath, calm attitude will do!

Hi aghiuta! That is a good suggestion. I will try to redirect her attention to a different thing if there's a thunder or lightning. I love my dog so much and sometimes, I'm worried if she's scared.

I have the same with my dog. She's a friendly dog rather than fierce and around 6 years old. In the past year and a half, whenever its starts to rain, or wind is picking up, or thunder/lighting, she starts to act weird. Then a few minutes later I'll walk past the bathroom and hear a panting noise. When I turn on the lights, I see my dog huddled in the corner panting very fast. Another thing that scares her is flashes from cameras. My dog recognizes the camera flash so well that she will freak out whenever she sees the camera, hears the camera turn on or suspect someone is holding the camera.

Hi tacooftwister22! My dog is also afraid of cameras. Not necessarily flashes because I do not know if her eyes will be damage with camera flashes. Everytime she sees a digital camera or a phone camera, she always look the other way. As if she's a camera shy dog. Hahaha.

Hi Rand_Light! How are you? Yes, my dog also goes to the bathroom if she's afraid. It is either under the bed or inside the bathroom. She's very cute when she hide in the bathroom but I make sure that me and my mom stays with her.
