Gambling as a means of earning extra money

September 28, 2011 4:15am CST
Many people take their chances through gambling whether on casino or through online gaming or bingo. Some say they are even lucky to have won many times over the machines but other people refute this belief saying that gambling in any form is addicting and gambling scions only operate casinos and online gaming and slot machines just to take your money away from you. Guys, what are your opinion about this? Is there really such a thing as controlled gambling?

I signed up to a bingo website a couple of months back, and deposited £10 into my account. I was lucky enough to win a large prize of £200 almost straight away, and this means that I gained all of my money back. On that website, you're allowed a free play every day, and now I will just use this rather than using my own money to add to my account. I do matched betting, which is betting but it is risk free and this means that you never have to worry about losing because at the end of the day it just isn't going to happen.

Hi Dorenski, unless we are the owner of the casino, there is no sure way of making money. During the year, at least one casino in Las Vegas closed down. I think even when the slot machines and card games are guaranteed money maker, it still takes a lot of gamblers for the casino to make money. When nobody comes, the casino makes a loss. it still has to pay workers, and utilities. I think being a full time gambler is very hard. Only those who are very good at blackjack and not greedy can make it.

I think one can stop gambling if he/she wants to. They have these 1 cent slot machines because once they reach up to at least $1.00, they won't want to stop and then considered gambling problems. I think that people can stop even if they win big or little. If they can't control, they don't know how much they can be losing (imagining they won big). I think they should think before they even press the slot again (think for example $1,000 going to $0.00 if the lose it all).

yes, there are people who earn big in gambling. there are also those who win small time. and many lose in gambling. this is where the gambling firms earn their income. while some who gamble hope to earn some extra money, most of those who go there are in it for the fun of it. it is a recreation for them. they are least interested in money, it is the thrill and excitement of the games.

In my opinion, gambling is not the wisest means of earning extra money. The chances for losing the money are greater than the chances of winning. The best way to earn exta income are through reputable online sites such as mylot. Or the money could be invested wisely either in savings bonds or CD certificates, or by cutting grass and doing landscape work for others, and in the winter time by plowing snow for other people.

Gambling is just gambling. It is what it is. I would NEVER play any gambling game with a high stake. Even poker, that's almost the same as putting your money into lottery tickets (I'm not saying it IS the same, but still, close). Also, the thing with gambling is that you have to have a lot of money to begin with, at least to make a lot and in a short time. I'd say it's a lot better to be on the other side of gambling and be the company that operates the slot machines or the casino or the website or whatever. Now that's the way to earn lot! It's obvious that most people lose money in the long run and only a couple lucky ones win big, otherwise the gambling companies would go bankrupt. It's just that every player hopes they're gonna be that lucky one. There are also other forms of gambling, but they call it Forex or High Yield Investments or other names. These are pretty much the same as gambling, of course expertise can help to minimize loss, but still, even the big shots can lose with stock trading or investments that go haywire, etc. I'm sticking to filling out one lottery ticket a week, every week of the year, and that's it. That's enough excitement for me.

I did some press-release work a while back for a company that produces and supplies online gambling platforms - the software behind the casinos - and I can assure you that legal online gambling is built so that the house always wins in the end. The odds on every single casino game (I'm excluding stuff like poker, where the three-deck deck is shuffled after every hand) are carefully and mathematically calculated so that the players can win but, overall, the house profits. Of course, the temptation lies in the fact that individuals can win even if the house wins overall and that part is entirely true: you can win a lot of money because a lot of other people lose. Then again, you could be the loser all the time. That's just the way the cookie crumbles, as they say. As for controlled gambling, yes - it definitely exists. It's always the same (as mentioned by someone above): set your limit and stop when you reach it. Not a penny more. It's also good to have a win limit: if you win $xx, you stop and pocket the profit. It just takes a little self-control, like anything potentially addictive.

You're right! Gambling instills the sense that by playing and giving our money to those devious slot machines we will win big money, the more we deposit the more we will win. It depends on luck and if your luck is pretty good, there is a chance of you winning big cash but this idea can become an addiction. I have an uncle who gambles and he has no idea how to save his money. Whatever money he earns, he feeds it to the slot machine. But some people handle addiction well, I know people who just gamble for fun and just deposit a little bit of money. If they don't win anything then they'll just leave. My parents just go for the fun of it. So it does depend on the person.
