How do these online sites earn, I am just curious!

Recently I ordered online for my baby's stuff and it was a site that offers C.O.D. (Cash on Delivery) as payment and they deliver your orders for free as long as the minimum order was $3.00. For me, it was a win-win situation because I don't put effort to go out and buy and it was convenient because it was the cheapest offer that I cannot find in stores and malls. It was an advantage but my question is, how do these online shops earn from me since the shipping is free. By the way it was an online shop in India. Their office was in Bengaluru, Karnataka, while they deliver my item in Mumbai which is way far, come to think of the distance and it was even COD. If you are a business man, would you offer C.O.D as a mode of payment and the shipping is even free for a small amount of order? How can businessman trust that the buyer would surely pay even if they call the buyer and trust that the order will not be a bogus one?

I haven't tried to sell online too, I am also studying how to ship items within the area near me and what shipping company offers less. But for sure, I cannot do the same to offer free shipping and I cannot do C.O.D. because I cannot trust anyone from here to where I am.
