Do you go Camping in Tents?

My daughter and I are going camping in tents this long weekend. It is years since we have done this. I was a bit concerned about the physical effort of putting up a tent, and the fact that I will have to go to the outside toilets during the night.
But in most ways I am quite excited by our camping plans. We are staying at a caravan park right on the foreshore of a beautiful beach.
I have everything ready, almost..tents, sleeping bags, airbeds, chairs, table, cooking facilities, food.. there is so much one has to take when camping.
My only concern now is the weather. Usually the october long weekend is very spring like. However, tomorrow is forecast quite a lot of rain. The problem being as to how to get a tent up in the rain? Two tents really.I may not be able to cook if it is raining too much, although we can get takeaway or go to a hotel.
If it is raining too much to put up a tent, then I don't know if alternative accomodation will be available, as it's the long weekend, and most places would be booked out.
Do you go camping? If yes, where do you camp?

I know I told my ex about 4 years ago that I would never go camping again, as his two kids made it a lot of hard work. This is my first try after we separated. My daughter will be very helpful. I don't mind roughing it, if, I can get a tent up in the rain.

Rain is always a major concern whenever I go camping. I have had so many wet camping trips that it is just not funny anymore! I am going camping on the Sunshine Coast next weekend for the Caloundra Music Festival. http://www.caloundramusicfestival.com/
I went to this last year and the weather was absolutely awful. I took two small tents and set them up under a large tarp, but the rain was that heavy that both tents leaked anyway and the wind was so strong that I hardly slept as I was afraid the tarp would take off it was so noisy! We paid for three nights but only stayed one! Also the festival had to be half shut down on the Sunday and moved into the indoor venues. Luckily we were already inside when this happened as we got to continue watching bands, but many others had to be turned away. Due to this they gave refunds to everybody for the Sunday, so not only did we get to see the bands, but we got some of our money back!
I will be taking my big tent this year and the weather is supposed to be fine, but anything can happen at this time of the year. October is when the storm season starts up here!
I went camping for ten nights last Christmas time at Jindabyne in the Snowy Mountains and it was awesome. Great weather most of the time, lake front camping, plenty of freedom for the kids to go off and do whatever they wanted to do. The best family holiday that we have ever had.

You always write such good responses, and I looked at your link. Not that your response was "positive", as the rain obviously totally ruined your trip.
Someone else also wrote about setting the tents up under a large tarp, but im not sure how to go about that? I would need poles to attach them to at the very least.
I had a look at the forecast and I gather the rain may be somehat clearing by the time we get there around 5pm tomorrow, probably less than 50% chance of rain. But the wind, hmm, we are right on the foreshore. I think our pegs are sufficicient and I have hammers to really get them in the ground. My daughters tent is not as strong as mine though. If we get our tents up and survive the night without being blown away, the rest of the weekend should be fine.
I can imagine your kids loved camping in the snowny mountains. My daughter is 18, and if she still wants to go on hoidays with me, then I'm happy to go along with this. Just before this Christmas we are driving 8 aways for a 5 day holiday in the outback where the heat will be extreme, to see a foal. Her foal we hope. But im not camping on tha trip... too hot.

I still had fun at the festival last year even though it was a bit of a disaster. Enough fun to make me return this year anyway.
You do need poles to set up a tarp above the tents. Strong ropes and thick pegs too. It can be a bit difficult to do the first time you do it as there is a bit of a knack to it. It is hard to do if there is a breeze about too.
I hope you are right about the clearing weather. Good luck, I hope to hear all about it on your return.
Yes, I think camping in the outback during summer would be slightly uncomfortable as tents can get extremely hot in the summer. Sounds like a good trip though!

I will tell you all about it next tuesday. Judging by the latest forecast, our main problem will probably be very strong winds. The rain should be easing.

It sounds interesting and exciting to go camping in tents, but I have never had such an experience. It is because camping in tents is not popular in our place. Right now it is raining here and it seems that a lot of places around the world are having rain. I wish you to enjoy yourself with the upcoming camping you will plan to have with a lot of fun.

hi jenny,
its been ages since i last went camping. but it was a totally clear day with lots of sunshine in the daytime and a beautiful star filled night. we set our tent a few meters from the beach. and we didnt need tarps over our tents. we were awaken by noises near the beach around 1 or 2am because a dolphin got washed out and had to be returned to sea. that was the exciting part. all the rest was a normal beautiful day hence we had fun.
i guess if the weather is not that promising, you have to have a second option as to where to sleep where it is dry.
or you can set your tent in between two trees where you can tie your tarp above your tents. trees would be a lot stronger to hold your tarps. i am not very sure about how you would put up poles, tarp will surely be quite heavy when the rain comes and it might just fall over the tents when you are not an expert in setting it up.
i hope the weather permits and you have lots and loads of fun together with your daughter.

Well, we had a lot of fun most of the time. But setting up the first night was terrible, and the last night I was sick. In between was great. I may start a discussion about it.
I would have been excited about a dolphin too, they are such wonderful animals.

I love to camp and always use a tent. I would suggest getting a tarp to put over your camping area, one big enough to cover the two tents and your cooking area if possible but if not then just over the cooking area.
The rain does make for a bit more problem with camping but at the same time, it can be nice to play cards under the tarp with a lantern and listen to the rain fall around you...
I hope the weather holds for you and your trip goes well!
I tend to camp in the Northeast US. I have several favorite spots that I go to, mostly near Moosehead Lake, which is my original home.

I have bought one tarp for my tent, but not for my daughters tent. I intended putting it immediately outside my tent, as it has a sort of opening with sides. Im not sure if I would be able to put a tarp over both tents to provide cover for cooking, etc. I would poles or something to do this.
It will be fun lying around in the tents listening to rain, and we have books and cards.
The othe rtwo days it should be fine weather, its just the setting up tents when it is raining that bothers me.

It has been a long time since I have been camping. I have not even considered it for the most part anymore, and if we did, we would have to purchase a Tent as well. Or maybe consider using our Canopy if we could? We would definately have to buy an air mattress first. That would be a definate. But since it is getting so expensive to go camping, we have never considered really doing it sometime.

When I have camped overnight in the past I usually have had a van or a station wagon to sleep in. We would go to a lake nearby, or to the river outlet for that lake. If it was raining I just would go home. Actually there are shelters where you can get out of the rain and use a grill under cover. I hope you have a ton of fun.

I know some vans can be set up to be real comfortable for camping type trips.
At the camping site where we are staying, I believe there are bbqs whcih I hope are under cover. You gave me an idea with that actually. If it is raining, although I have my own cooking stove, I could use the bbq if it has a cooking elemnt for a saucepan.

Camping with your daughter...How special is that? It is an opportunity for some very special memories for both of you. I haven’t been camping in years. I used to go a lot when I was a member of a bush walking club several years ago. I enjoyed it immensely, even if we didn’t shower as much as we wanted to or sleep comfortably at times! It was rough occasionally but it was also great fun. I hope you enjoy yourselves and that the weather is kind to you.

Thank you. I am hoping we cope with the diffficult set up in rainy or windy conditions. I want this to be special for us too. Cooking over a little stove, right next to the beach, and by sunday, daylight saving would have started.

It has been a long time since I went camping. We probably went 3 or 4 times. One time we even caped in Myrtle Beach on vacation but mostly we went to a lake about an hour from home. In general I liked it. One time however all it did was rain and we couldn't cook or do much of anything. I was a lot younger and in better shape the. There is NO WAY I could do it now.

I didn't think I would be able to go camping again. The last time was about 4 years ago, and I told my ex that I would never camp again. Now that I don't have his kids, who caused alot of the work when camping, Im quite looking forward to it.I'mnot happy about the weather today though, it may be stillbe raining when we got there and the forecast is for very strong winds.
Camping next to a lake would have been lovely.

I've been camping before but not the type of camping where you're in the middle of a forest and have to pull up a tent. My school plans a camp trip in which all students pack their necessities and we go to this camps site and we live in cabins. These camp trips are for experience and some bonding time with other students. The camp site is located in a forest near a beach and there's cabins every where with one area to eat with tables and chairs. So it's much more luxurious compared to camping with a tent and camp fire but I reckon that's more fun though.

My daughter did that type of camping as a high school student where they stayed in cabins. As a teacher (retired) most clases I would take on a trip and stay in cabins. It was always good fun.
Camp fires are great, but unfortunately they are banned in most places in Australia due to the fire danger.

i love going camping in tents i have a large six person tent that i use and its not that hard to put up at all i do it by myself because i usually go camping by myself the only thing i dont like about it is that it is so heavy but luckly i can just strap it to my mule with all my other gear and he carries it into the woods for me since we usually hike 3 to 5 miles into the woods before we set up camp i just use a sleeping bag on the ground i dont like using an airbed sometimes i dont even sleep in the tent just outside with the animals under the stars

You have a bigger tent than me. Mine is a 4 person, but really is more suitable for tow. My daughter has a tiny one person tent.
You have amule to carry your gear?
I don't hike for camping, too old for that!!
When I was much younger I slept under the stars a few times, but it would be way too cold for that now.

Rain schmain, if it's battering down, that should motivate you to put the tent up quickly ;-). Last time I went camping was on a tour of the Scottish islands, on a couple of days, It was blowing a hooley, with the wind coming from three different directions and the rain coming in sideways, I thought that the tent was going to get blown away but it held fast. The good thing about the weather was, all the biting insects got blown away. I had a great time on that trip though, visited some of the distilleries and sampled some of the whiskey they make out on the islands and walked in some very beautiful places where few other people visit. Also loved brewing up some tea and cooking on the fire/camp stove......

I have been to Scotland, but not the islands. I canimagine the wind blowing a gale!Visiting the distilleries would be good fun.
But,yes, I think my daughter and I will have to put the tent up very quickly, two tents actually.
