Do you spend extra hours in your job without pay?

I did it several times just to produce quality output without expecting extra payment in return. I could have do it just for the sake of working 8 hours and never care if I did compensated or not as long as I am working exact hours.
I just love my work though compensation not really sufficient on my needs. I don't know how you treat your job. When I started to feel life's financial scarcity I never care what kind of job would I take as long as I know it and can be learned. I landed a challenging job which I am in right now. I love really my work.
If you weigh in the job you have and the money you receive, which is heavier, the money or the love of work? Crazy isn't it? But, I just need your share..

Well I like doing it most of the time. I work with my dad and well since its his business,I cannot charge him for the help that he gets from me. Even if we are working. I just wait to see if he will give something for helping him or not. He buys me my stuff, and doesn't expects me to pay for rent or anything. The least I can do is to go help him. Although, I do need to start to manage my own money but I heard that its never okay to work with your family (parents). Help them, yea but working for them its not a good idea. I wonder why though.

Appreciate that my friend. Yeah it's good you are currently helping your parents with their business but I guess you're right it is not good working with them in term income earning, maybe for a lot of reasons. One reason is, progress would be less in terms of career or what you want to have and to be because your are working with your parents. I mean, it is really different working with any boss with lots of friends in the office or some business that you can really call it your own. Hope you got I mean...well, as long money won't stop coming for you ..go ahead.....anyway thanks for responding my friend and good luck with your job...

I always did the same, working beyond minimum working hours without additional pay just not to have back log on work and finish assigned task. Actually it id very usual here in our office but the company doesn't pay the exceeded hours we rendered but nobody was complaining. I think most of people here love there job and money would always be the second thing.

Good for you jumae but for me I stopped it already because my boss never considered my extra effort instead imposing stiffer disciplinary action intended for stubborn office mates that no one exempted. I would just work what number of working hours given to me..anyway..thanks for responding my friend..

Actually, our bosses were not also considering the efforts that we had on our work. Most of us came home very late at night because of work but when we came late at morning, they wouldn't consider it and just deduct in our salary the minutes of late that we got. The management is very unfair yet my co-workers didn't mind at all.

Before, when i was still single, working overtime without pay is not an issue for me. I love my work and I enjoy doing it with my co-workers who are also nice and who valued work more than ever. My regular salary was just exactly enough to sustain my needs, no more- no less. I stayed in the office longer than eight hours, I even reported for work during weekends, that's okay with me. My reason is that, its beter to stay in the office and be productive than staying in my rented apartment doing nothing, just watching tv, sleeping and etc.
But now, when I got married and have a child, that practices would be impossible now. I already have someone to feed aside from myself, there will gonna be many bills to pay and many more. Am doing extra job for extra income now. And time is so precious. I need to have more time with my 11 month old baby, we only have few times together since am always at work. Now I could really say that 24 hours a day is not enough to do all the things that I wanted.

Wise idea my friend..children grow up with stubborn characters due to lack practical care of the parents because they are fond of looking for money...it should not be. Family is the top priority if you want your children could have and maintain right life's values..I appreciate your right track of raising your family..congratulations.
Keep it up!!!!

yes, sometimes i spend extra hours in my job without pay just to finish my tasks assigned to me. You know what, when you are so much concerned with your job and not to mention your company, you are willing to do so.

I am self employed and work online from home, and this means that I don't do work for no pay because I get paid for everything that I choose to do during the course of my day while I'm working at home. However, when I was in my last job, I found that I had to put more hours in than I should have been able to because they didn't have enough staff so the ones that they did have had to work for at least an extra hour at the end of the day when they should have been going home. That is one of the main reasons that I made the decision to leave the post in the end.

I am on disability now and no longer work. When I did, my last job was salary and I didn't get any extra for overtime. I still stayed longer than I had to. One reason was because I liked the job, and I felt if I stayed a little longer at night, that was less I had to do the next day. Also, I don't have a family, so there was nothing to rush home to except my cats.

When I was working, I really did not care about being well-compensated or not that much but I had learned loving it so well that I really tried working even overtime without pay. Anyway, there is much more that I was getting then than my earning or salary - the social status that the work had brought me was greatly considered and of course, the training for more enhancement of my skills and knowledge that I had acquired through my work are always a credit to me. Just keep on loving your work and perform with excellence and someday, God will provide you the greener pasture within or out of the company you are presently connected with.

Appreciate that my friend. I did also what you did in your job but I decided to stop is because it was nonsense for me. My boss never appreciated what I did instead I was included on the pool of my co-workers who were given very harsh discipline. I got frustrated and stop working an extra hour anymore. I only work what is the right time given for me...I don't mine...thanks anyway my friend for your care to respond..keep it up..

Yes I understand that my friend. For me, if I did some extra time for my work it's because I don't like back-logs..i want things done in a day that's why I have to add an extra but not most of the time. Besides, I think we have different lifestyle and (country)culture of working..I don't mine adding extra time of working as long as the boss would appreciate. In my case, I stop it anymore because my boss never appreciate what I did..well, I don't care if he would not care..I only work what I required and time given to me...
Thanks for responding anyway my friend...Good luck...

After getting promoted last year in Feb, I used to work 3-4 hours extra everyday without pay and with only 45 mins break...but this year in Jan during the appraisal I was told that don't do much for the team and I should dedicate more time to work. That was it!!! I resigned the next day and now though I earn merely 20% of what I used to earn in office, I am happy and satisfied.

That was a blessing in disguise my friend, you would not have been 20% more in your income before if you did not resigned. Besides, being self employed is the best income earning job because you're the boss of yourself..and that's what I am longing for...thanks for responding my friend..good luck with your job..

i find my job okay, i think i have worked extra hours, minimum of an hour too but i do not always get paid for it. sometimes you just have to extend once in a while and that would not be a harm i think especially if you want to get things done and not be too tight fisted wanting to charge everything to the company.
sometimes there are free times at work too, right?!

Hi mob,
Usually I don’t want to sit extra hours in my office but when in need I just don’t care to spend some extra time to finish some urgent work. Earlier I used to sit in extra hours but I never asked any extra payment. I think I got compensation on other methods, I mean when I wish to leave early or when I come late in office nobody question me. Moreover, I always do my work with 100 % sincerity and everybody knows my dedication on work.

Appreciate that shree. Just a couple of weeks I got frustrated because the management which I am working never appreciate what I did - extra hours without extra payment- instead I was included on a very stiff discipline intended supposedly to those office mates only who are so stubborn and demanding. Right now, I only work what's the exact time for me to work...thanks for your shree...take care...

I did that for years, just because they said there was no money to pay an other employee (which wasn't true). I liked my job, was a work aholic and I wanted to get all the work (way too much) finished (a never ending task).
They just used me.. at a certain time they did pay someone else, who got payed way more as me for doing nearly anything. I will never do that again. It's proved: nobody likes hard workers. They just like those and will pay the ones who do as if they are working/who are bluffing more. If you are not like that, if you don't have a big mouth you can work till you die and nobody cares. In the end they will say it was your own free will. I found out work is not satisfying, other things are. So I will never work or walk that fast anymore or be the first one to volunteer.
