i have seen a video in youtube about a father whose job is to maneuver a bridge whenever a boat comes and put it back again so that trains can pass through it.
There was one time when he had to choose whom to save, his son's life or the lives of thousands of people on a train...if he would save his son he'll be killing thousands of people and the opposite if he saves the people on the train...
if your were the father...what would you do??? who will you save? your only son or the people on that passing train???
you should watch the video in youtube: Bridgemaster and his son
post your views....

I think that, no matter how many other lives there were in danger, I would have to save the life of my son because he would be the thing that meant the absolute world to me and I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I chose any other decision than this one. We, as humans, have been designed to look after our genes, and this means that we will always choose to save our child over anybody else in the equation. I also think that it's one of those things that you don't know what you'd do for sure unless you were actually put into that situation.

oldchem1.. I totally agree with you..
I was just quickly browsing here..and saw this discussion and JUST had to respond..
I disagree with you though saying it is ethically or morally wrong, as your 100% right that it is your maternal instinct, and not only that, but its your child ey, who in their right mind would kill their own child??- hmm..saying that though..?..

in this question, there's no right or wrong answer it's just on how you justify your answer because this is to know your morality...if this would also happen to me and i would have to choose i would really also choose my son because i won't even let anybody hurt him and then i'll kill him?! what kind of a mother am i right? so i salute all of your answers...

I saw this video a few months ago... sad, indeed.
Regardless of what decision I made, lives would still be on my mind and conscience.

Oh dear, I remember watching this video. Yeah it can really make the viewers emotional.
I am just a 19 year old guy and has no child yet, so it would be really hard for me answer this. However, I believe that there is no wrong answer to this question since it's a matter of opinion.
With all honesty, some of you might hate me but I would choose the lives of a thousand people. Just the very same thing what our GOD did for us, sinful humans.
John 3:16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
I am not GOD however, I believe that my son would really understand it and perhaps would be even be prouder of me. Again, it's just my opinion. I can just imagine that inside that train, there are hundreds of children, mothers, fathers, elders or even innocent babies that might die. In short, I am willing to sacrifice my personal happiness for the sake of these people.
Lastly, it's really a complicated question, that's why it's really a matter of opinion and current emotions.
