Does Google Adsense Really Pay Or Is It A Scam?

I have been wondering, is Google Adsense a legit paying program? or is it just a big scam on the net? I have wanting to join it but I need to know first if they really pay cause I would hate to spend time earning some cash and find out that they will not pay me money. Some say it is a big scam and that they will not pay you your earnings. So if anyone knows about them could you please tell me? Thanks!!
