I have a self cleaning oven and today is the day. I have the windows open and fans on, but the stench from the oven is terrible. The oven gets sooooo hot, that the food etc with just bake to ashes and will be easy to wipe out. But until it is finished, the whole house will small like this.

You know, we actually have a self-cleaning oven as well, but I've never actually cleaned out the oven that way because of the smell of it. It is so much worse than the smell of first turning the heat on for the year, which we had to do this weekend because of the extreme cold that we've had this weekend. Instead, I choose to just get some oven cleaner and use the old elbow grease to clean out the oven because it doesn't smell nearly as bad.

I am thinking this is the way I will do it next tine, because I still had to use an SOS pad to clean.

My mother and I have a self cleaning oven as well, and that thing is still difficult to clean. Self cleaning over my foot. You still have to use elbow grease to get the gunk out of that oven.

self cleaning oven - The temperature of a self cleaning oven can go as high as 900 degrees F.
I noticed that as well. I still had to scour the bottom, sides and top. I have to ask myself is it working the electric bills to have the temperature that high for 2 hours??

I have one of those too, and since it heats up the house so bad I try to do it in the winter, because winter in Texas generally isn't that bad

Are you supposed to take out the racks? I didn't and now the shine is gone from them. The heat was too intense, I guess.

I have one of those too and was thinking of doing it tonight so that the heat will help with warming the house as we are expecting our first frost tonight. I hate cold weather and I know that this will heat the house a lot. I have never really noticed a bad smell so I am not sure about that, but I usually always have a candle lit inside so that might be why I have never smelled an issue.

My oven was not very dirty, because I had a liner on the bottom that I took out and threw away. the smell is like burnt food and ashes.

My oven hasn't been working for the longest time. There was a busted coil in the bottom that I failed to replace for a while. The broil function was working, but the bake and self-clean didn't. Last month, I finally had a chance to open it up at the back and determine that it was just the coil that needed replacement. After buying the new coil and replacing the old one, I was able to clean the over too. And yes, it took a few cleanings before it became acceptable. I had a fan, blowing out the kitchen door to take out the smell.

I think that it is suppose to be that way if we leave the oven build up. What I do is try to clean it more often so that it is easier to clean. But it still will smell terribly during the process, even with only a little mess from it. The smell is around for a while so I try to also light some scented candles also.

I know what you mean. I try to keep my oven clean so it does not get like that but sometimes it cannot be helped.

There has to be a better way! I burn aluminum saucepans to clean them. That smells bad enough. I can't imagine doing that with my oven!
