Do you sometimes feel a little shy while shopping?

United Kingdom

In my time, I've existed as a shop assistant. But of course, far more often a shopper. So I know both worlds. However, there are times especially in big stores, when I became aware I am not in my domain, but someone else's. Usually I'm not shy though, not in the least...unless that is something happens and I need to seek assistance, then I can feel a little awkward, but never for long. It's just temporary. How about you? Do you ever get shy while shopping; or never?

Hi Carl! I don't really get shy as much as I do nervous. I sometimes feel like people are staring at me and talking about me since I am a big guy. I hate that feeling and I sometimes find myself just wanting to leave the store as quick as possible.

Hi HB, I know what you are saying, a person can be self-conscious in stores; and once outside, feel back on their own domain, more themselves..

LOL...Hi CarlHalling, I wish I did have that feeling of being shy. Maybe it would keep me out of the stores so much... I guess different strokes for different folks..because feeling shy about shopping just sounds a little peculiar....I hope you find out why this happens or if there is somethimg you can do to correct, unless you are fine with that feeling when you go shopping...

Perky guy... - This was me in about 1993?
Yes, I'm fine with it, but it only applies where I am known by sight...I am never shy in places where no one knows me. In fact, I can be very perky...just the other day, I was waiting in line in a store near me and noticed there were two queues, so I piped up something along the lines of: "Which one's the right queue?" I was smiling; so no one took offence; but I never did find out the right one...:o)

There have been times especially when in a Bigger store sometimes finding a clerk and asking them where something is. Not being able to read all the signs or wanting to walk around the whole store looking for something. The worst problem sometimes is the stores that seem to always be moving things around. Sometimes I am shy, and wonder what the person is thinking when you ask where certain things are, or act quite curious when you are checking out as to why you would be buying the items you are.

Shy? - Wow...this guy looks it (actually CRH in '02)...he is (was) staring at the floor, poor lamb!
I almost never ask clerks where things are...I have to be really desperate! Yes, that would make me self-conscious too...wondering around looking for something. This is especially true for me in stores where I go regularly.

I was painfully shy All the time . But now I walk in and if I make eye contact with the sakes person, I will say hi and just shop. Most of the time I'm window shopping.

I can be perky and chatty when I'm a stranger and unknown, but I get self-conscious in places where I feel I'm a familar face.

Really? I would think it is easier to be a regular. then the sales person Knows what you like. You could go in and they could make shopping go faster.I used to be a regular at a restaurant. I like everything plain and to they that was special . So when I walked in , they Knew what I wanted. ps. Good to hear from you Love. talk to you later.

I guess it depends on what I'm shopping for. I think we all go through awkward periods where we feel like we are in someone else's world. I have come to a pretty comfortable place where I realize that it is my world too. I feel a little funny if I buy something strictly for women and there is a male cashier or associate but other than that, I am not shy at all when it comes to shopping.

Shy? - No, this boy wasn't shy...quite the opposite...I should know!
That's good...I can still be a bit shy, especially where I shop regularly; on the other hand, as a stranger, I'm not shy at all...

I don't really get shy while I'm shopping...Even in most situations where most people would! I just lost tons of weight and now I'm sort of small...I often buy my clothes in the little boy's section or little girl's section cause they're cheaper and they fit better and I'm a 21 year old woman! So even though I should be embarrassed, I'm really not. Whatever saves me money and looks good!

I buy very small-size socks...I hate big ungainly socks that slip down in your shoes; so I buy very small cotton socks so tight you can forget about them when you're wearing them...:o)

I tend to get a bit overwhelmed in stores that are definitely upscale. I do okay with discount and mass market stores, though. My money pays the salary for all of them.

I'm OK if I can lose myself, and not be observed, but if I'm a familar face in the store, I get self-conscious.

Retiring.... - This man, actually me in about 2003, looks/looked uncomfortable and retiring doesn't/didn't he...
I'm especially like that where I am known by sight...I feel comfortable with being unknown...

No, it doesn't happen to me. I don't feel shy when I shop and can always ask assistance whenever I need without any hesitation because that is my basic right as a shopper. The sales clerks anyway are almost always happy to serve so they would gladly assist in the best way they could.

An open, friendly smile... - Such as this one of mine from many years ago...is always a good device for breaking the ice in social situations of any kind I think...
I think you have a good approach...:)

Sometimes, But most of the time I'm more irritated when I'm spending my time checking what I'm buying and the sales lady is pressuring you to buy it. For me shopping is enjoyable when you can freely check the products. Another thing, I don't know if its also happen in your country. But in my country big departments stores put please don't sit on chairs and beds that they are selling. I really hate this because how will you know if that chair/bed is soft or hard if you don't try to sit on it right?

Not at all and am usually comfortable while shopping. I figure the sales assistance is there to do a job and I usually am not afraid at all to ask for help and or strike up conversation. In fact I have tried things on and came out the dressing room and asked how they think it looks. lol

Shy youth? - My word, he (actually me many years ago) looks it doesn't he, poor lamb.
I can be very chatty and open too, but with strangers rather than people who know me by sight...they can make me feel shy...

Yeah I'm a pretty shy person and I feel kinda insecure when I shop alone. When I'm in a clothing store just shopping and browsing clothes by myself and group of friends come in and start talking to each other near me. I get a little intimidated because they're in a gang whereas I'm all alone shopping. Sometimes the shop keeper stares at me because she thinks I'm going to steal something! Just because I'm alone, people assume I might run off with something or maybe I'm just really paranoid. And I can't really make up my mind when I shop on my own, I need some else's opinion. So I'm a pretty shy shopper I suppose.

A shopper tends to stand out when they're alone...it can make a person self-conscious.

hi there! sometimes when i go out shopping by myself it makes me a shy shopper but when my sister is around, my mom or anybody to accompany me i am not that shy. it feels a little awkward to be strolling around by myself. sometimes sales lady would be staring at you like you have bad plans. i hated that so i always have someone when i am buying so that i could get some opinion about what to buy. but i make sure that i am comfortable with my company cause if not then i am still a shy shopper.

Secretive? - This fellow, actually me many years ago, looks/looked it, doesn't/didn't he...as if he is/was hiding in the shadows. But I wasn't too shy then; now on the other hand, I can be...
I know what you mean, it can be intimidating for me being observed too; and yet in a very large store where no one knows me, I am a confident shopper...I am fine...

At times, yes. Especially in stores that doesn't put a price tag on their products. It feels awkward for me to ask how much it cost. I might not be able to afford it. Sometimes I also feel shy when I enter shops where in I'm the only customer, I don't like it when sales people follows me around. That's why I mostly shop at department stores where there are more people and price tags are everywhere.

Timid? - This young man, actually me many years ago, looks/looked somewhat reserved doesn't/didn't he? Actually I wasn't at all for the most part...
I'm like you...I feel most comfortable in crowded stores where I can just blend in...

If I'm by myself, then I get very shy. I just like to go into a store and look around without having the store workers bother me. I know they're just trying to do their job when they ask if I need anything, but I feel like I almost can't shop comfortably with them asking and watching me all the time. If I need help with anything, I'll ask. I'd much rather go shopping with someone else so I don't have to look through stuff quietly and not talking to someone I know lol

Marching... - ...to a different tune; yes I've always been different I think, ever since I was a kid. Perhaps that's what makes me self-conscious in my old age...
I feel the same, I get awkward if I feel I'm being observed, but in crowded places where no one knows me, I'm fine.

I myself am quite shy whenever I am around a bunch of people that I do not know. I believe I may have some sort of social anxiety disorder, or something similar. Whenever I am shopping with a friend, my fiance, or a close family member... I feel better, because I focus on my time with the person I am with instead of everyone else around me. I usually feel awkward when I am looking at something in a store, and then I notice someone staring at me. Or, when I am talking to the person I am with, and others seem to be paying attention to me and the conversation. Sometimes, I will walk away to continue talking, or I will just be quiet until they go away.

I can identify, it's as if when with a close companion, half of the social sensitivity is taken by them, and we feel more relaxed; and we are not so socially vulnerable.

never ! im proud whenever i go shopping because its like you have enough time and money to shop unlike those people who do not have enough time and money to buy or shop. whenever i shop i prefer to have atleast 2 people with me to help deciding. since im a kid i enjoy it but i think when i get old and working i will only shop once a month? so i'll enjoy every minute of it while im still young :)
