Depressed Cat

I know this sounds so insanely bizarre but one of my cats has been put on prozac. My parents went on vacation to Florida at the same time I was in Hawaii so they have a lot of alone time (my aunt came and played with them every day./) Shortly after we came back, she developed a UTI and it just didn't seem to go away. The vet finally told us that she thinkgs that because of the alone time, she had become depressed. I thought it was all mumbo jumbo but to tell the truth, it seems to have worked. She doesn't pee outside the box anymore and she seems much more cuddly and like her old self. WIshful thinking maybe? What's you opinion? How far would you go for an animal that is like a member of the family?

Unbelievable! On a human, it takes months to see an effect when treating depression!

I wonder if maybe it's because it's a smaller animal and smaller brain, etc. Could also be that cats don't build up an immunity to things as easily as we do because cats aren't constantly on meds like we are usually.

Cats are really sensitive pets. My cat was alone for the whole night because I had to go somewhere where cat is not allowed. When I came back, she was not her usual self. She was so depressed and she does not want to eat. Good thing after a week of cuddling and hugging her, she came back to her usual self. Since then, I didn't want to leave her at home again. :)

We have a cat - KC - who is lacking in self confidence. Never thought I'd see a cat like that. She is fine with our 7 dogs but put her near the other 2 cats and she becomes a wreck Simba - our Tiffany - is the exact opposite. You know how cats think they're tigers or lions ? Simba knowes he's a tiger Even if he falls off something or gets his jumps wrong and lands in a heap his attitude is " I meant to do that " I often think that he's the head of the house - not me As per the saying - " Dogs have masters , cats have staff"

hi angel3yes I guess since we are animals and cats are animal sure a cat could get depressed too.i am glad whatever treatment the vet gave her she is her old self again. I am a cat lover too.If I had a cat and she was ill if I could afford it at all I would see the vet got her well again. When I had a cat she was definitely one of the family and we loved her to pieces. we moved into an aprt complex and so we had to find a home for Midnightwhinc like to broe my heart but nowhere could we find an apt we cou ld afford that would let us keep her.
