I think it's so much better, not to mention funner, to make costumes. And people appreciate it when you knock on their doors. My Xhubby put together the best Batman costume ever. It was black (darker than black)and it took him three months to make. He used plastic milk bottles, caulking, craft paint and black silk. He won every contest he entered. And he's an actor so he really got into character. Boys!!! So tell us your favorite homemade costume. What did you use to make it?

i think my favorite halloween costume i made was Freddy Kruegger (you know, the guy in Nighmare on elm street). To make it, i used some old cloths (brown jeans, red-stripped longsleeve shirt, boots and a hat) and for the head...that was long!..i shaved my head (as usual) and then i tooked play-doh and melted-candel wax to make my head look like freddy...a lone i wasent able to make it good..so my friend came and help me..it tooked about 3 hours to make my head...but then it was sooooo realistic! i remember the fun i had this year, i was taking off my hat and saluting children the same way that the real freddy would have done and it was so freignting!...anyway, halloween is coming soon hein! i wounder if anyone else is goin to be a Freddy Kruegger this year? Happy halloween!

Will you resurrect Freddy this year? So the melted wax went on the play-doh, right, not the shaved head. Ouch!!!

lol actually we melted the wax in a mold i made of my head with aluminum-foil, and then we removed it from the mold to apply it on my head..after we gave it a little bit of hot air from a hair-dryer...and then with kind scluped it it a little to give it a realistic burned marks..the play-d'oh was used to make some extra bump underneath my eyes and to give extra forms on my face...... so i didnt burned my head!lol -peace

I remember making a costume for my cousins Halloween party. I made myself as a bum in the streets. It wasn't to enter any contest just to dress up at her house. It was pretty fun. She stopped making it or at least stopped inviting me because they like to dance a lot and since I'm not much of a dancer.

Oh, it is must more fun. I used to make my usual gypsy costume. My mom's skirt, peasant blouse and loads of jewelry. I always loved being the gypsy. And my daughter and granddaughter are either vampires or witches. And my grandson is a different super hero every year.

You do have fun don't you? Bare feet, of course? And dancing in the street?

We love halloween! Decorate more for it that we do for Christmas. Dancing in the street? Now what kind of a role model would I be if I did that? haha

I made my daughter a bumble bee costume when she was about 10 years old.I took black and yellow felt and made a striped dress.I made a black beret and sewed antennae to it. Made a tail with a point for her stinger out of felt. bought her black tights. oh and used black mesh to make wings for her. She was very comfortable in it - more so than one of those plastic and rayon store bought costumes. it was fun to make too.

That's another plus when we make our own costumes . . . we can make it comfy to wear. Nice job. Sounds like she looked adorable.

My best Halloween costume ever made actually took me and 3 of my friends to set up and get me into when all was said and done. We used wood to make stilts and aluminum to add like a bicycle turning mechanism. We used fake fur over paper mache' and made a tail. Once I was set into my contraption and it strapped to my legs we used spirit gum and fake hair to build up the connection between me and the contraption. After that we added weaponry like a shield and battle axe. We also made simple "armor" using brown leather belts and homemade chainmail. If you haven't figured it out I was a centaur and when walking in this contraption I was at 7.5 ft. a good 1ft and a half taller than i normally am. The contraption took us all about 4 monthes to make, the legs getting to work took the longest.

I don't recall actually making a good Halloween costume. I think I tried to make a ghost out of a sheet but that was about it.

I love it! Did you make two holes for eyes and smoke a pipe or something? You could have added spider webs or blood always works.

Glad you asked this. It brings to mind what happened to me once. My 3 kids were small and my sisters wanted to walk down the railroad track near our home and take them out. They all had children of their own, too. I got this big idea about a rabbit hat. The more I thought about it, my creative abilities began to jam my brain. It turned out I made a large costume to wear on my head that had 2 large ears sticking up on top of the head. We all went out and when the dogs spotted me in my rabbit costume.......guess what happened. They all ran after me. WHEW. My family and my kids got a good laugh. glowin100
