I love watching the old classic westerns. There were many aired back in the 60s. My favorite has always been The Virginian. I got to meet James Drury-The Virginian this weekend and can tell you he is very devoted to his fans. What an amazing man. Wish I could have met him years ago. Who's your favorite classic western star?

I grew up watching Maverick and as a kid I favored Jack Kelley (Bart) more than James Garner (Bret). I would likely reverse that today. Warner Brothers, in those days produced a number of westerns, the first possibly being Colt 45. Encore westerns was rerunning old episodes of Maverick and I had a chance to see one that was a bit funny. Bart was arrested as being the accomplice of a Indian who was being framed as a stage coach robber and murderer. The crooked judge released Bart on the condition that he had to find the Indian and bring him back. Bart then goes from town to town hunting and he runs into all the other Warner Brothers western stars: Cheyenne (Clint Walker), Bronco (Ty Hardin), Sugarfoot (Will Hutchens)and Lawman (John Russell). The funniest scene though was when Bart went into a sheriff's office filled with dust and cobwebs. He found a note from Christopher Colt (character on Colt 45) but Colt was gone because that show had been cancelled. Out of that I would say James Garner was my western favorite star although Maverick went against the grain of a typical western. He used to try to avoid fights rather than look for them. Garner also played a similar character in Support Your Local Gunfighter and Support Your Local Sheriff. James Rockford was also probably an updated Maverick. I think I also like Garner because he seemed dedicated to his friends and cast many of the same actors in different movies or shows. Much the same could be said for Clint Eastwood who used to hang out with Garner before both became famous.

I liked the Maverick movies also. James Garner always puts on a good performance in what ever he does. My favorite James Garner film was Murphy's Romance with Sally Field. It wasn't a western, but a very good role for him.

I didn't realize he was still alive. I see you posted this many years ago. However, I don't have one favorite, I have many, as I loved watching all the westerns when I was growing up.
