Man still helpless in the hands of nature.

The recent earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale that rocked Sikkim and parts of eastern India was one of the deadliest in India. Although we live in an age of advanced technology, no one has been able to accurately predict the place or timing of earthquakes till now. Hence we have no option but to live with them. It is thus again proved that man is still now helpless in the hands of nature. Am I right?

I feel that there´s no safe place on earth to live. We also have big earthquakes in my country, other countries have tornadoes, hurricanes, floods or droughts.
But what is worse still is that besides that, there are many dangerous places because man makes them dangerous. Although we will never know it, I feel that Japan´s earthquake had more problems due to the nuclear reactor than the toll on human lives directly taken by the earthquake and tsunami. We won´t know either the amount of lives (military and civilian) taken by wars where innocent people go to get killed while the responsibles talk over a well served table.
With technology in good hands, we can save lives from natural disasters. In our last big earthquake (8.8 Richter), we had relatively few victims because there is knowledge in construction for earthquakes. The werst was the tsunami because it was Summer and many people were camping near the sea. Such would be done with tornados and hurricanes too.
But we, human beings, don´t care for the 2 billion undernouriched people in circumstances that our planet has enough food for everyone, if we would only shaere our bounty.

A 6.8 earthquake is getting up there. They are saying we may have some higher ones here in the US. There is one that could go anytime right near where I live. We are totally helpless when it comes to such things. Just have to try to prepare for the aftermath as best we can.

Tsunami, tornado, hurricane, volcano eruption, and much more, you name them. What can we do to counter - resist these deadly nature disasters? Can we outrun them, or can we conquer them with modern technology? We might be able to predict them before hand, and do all the precautionary actions, but we still not be able to do anything to tame them.

If we want to battle nature, I would say you are right. But we should not really go against nature but rather learn to flow with it. I know it sounds like zen or some other weird teaching, but we have what it takes to survive the wrath of nature, we are not actually helpless, more like powerless to stop natures course, and thats the way it should be. Being prepared can help us let go of the feeling of helplessness and despair.
Predicting nature is a terrible idea, its like predicting the way you mother-in-law thinks!

hai friend
we cant say man is helpless in the hands of nature, just take an example, now a days man life span is increased while comparing to olden days this is because of improvement in technology, finding or predicting earthquakes will be harder but some work is going on to find earth quakes and tsunami etc, but humans should realize their mistakes on nature, natural calamities are widely happening because of human neglegance and de-forestation, green revolution should be implemented world wide to be safe.
man is not helpless, all is in hands of man.
implementation is necessary.

I agree. Man is still helpless in the hands of nature. Even though technologies now are highly advanced, still no one can predict as to when such calamities will occur.

Hi DoctorDidi, In the case of earthquakes you are right but it may not be true someday in the future. We have made great progress in predicting weather conditions and because of it, many lives are saved every year. We do know the areas of the world that are most prone to earthquakes and people are encouraged to make buildings as safe as possible in these areas. We are not helpless and must continue to learn more so that someday things well be different. Blessings.

Man is full of ego and self importance but in reality we are no more than ants on the surface of Mother Earth. In fact we have grown so far beyond the Natural world that we cannot sense the changes in the earth as many other animals can.

Man is trying to perdict when earthqukes will happen. Our technology is great but I think it has to be even more advanced to predict when earthquakes will hit. No matter how advance technolgy is I think man will be helpless to nature in some way or other. Man can't conquer nature!

Yes, even if we live in an advance technology that can read and measure the strength of the quake, we cannot do anything about lost lives due to natural calamities. But we should remember that life here on earth is temporary and that God is the one who controls everything, not nature.
