I have a cast iron wood burning stove in my house. It developed a crack in the front bottom of it. I have been nervous about burning wood in it ever since the crack happened. I do know that when I try to damper down the fire it won't, as it sucks air through the crack.
Do you think it's safe to burn small fires in the evenings? And let the wood die out before going to bed?

Every one of the answers has said the same thing, and you're right! It's not worth losing my life over. Thanks!

Thanks - that's why I haven't burned any fires in the last two years. But with finances as they are, I look to cut all corners, I have plenty of fire wood, but will try not to burn at all unless I can't do anything else!

Do you have a Craig's list or freecycle in your area? It sounds like you should look into a replacement but I certainly understand the need to make changes financially. I actually was just given a stove from a local store owner because they upgraded... good luck but just please be careful...

I will - and yes, we have Craig's List here. You got lucky with the new stove! I should have a dealer of the stoves come out and look at it. I might just do that too! Thanks.
