Most of the dogs are scared to attack people when they are on the street?

A few days ago when i was walking my dog, small sized pariah dog/pom cross, 2 german sheperd dogs came out of a house and was running towards us .I am very scared of bigger dogs but i didn't want risk my dog's life.So i tried to scare them away by picking up a stone and aiming at them. They both ran back to the gate of their house and was looking at us until we went away.I had another such experience when a boxer dog ran from its house and attacked my dog .when i shouted at it and threw a stone at it,it just ran away. I wonder why do pet dogs run away when they see stone in a person's hand.As a matter of fact my dog does that too when he sees someone picking up something from the street. He assume it is stone and gets scared, even though i' ve never thrown stone at him..lol.

Hello Ravi,
Dogs are intelligent animals. They don't need to live an experience a hundred times for them to learn something. It is enough for a dog to be hit by a stone once, and he will avoid being hit again. They learn fast that once a man picks up something from the ground, it is possible to be hit by that "something". So their instincts tell them to run and hide in a safe place. Sometimes it is enough to pretend that you pick something from the ground and you'll see the attacker running away.
You were lucky that the dogs that were ready to attack you had had such experiences before. You could have met a dog that hadn't known what means when somebody bends down to take a stone from the ground.

I have tried picking up my dog when I see a stray dog nearing us and it worked most of the time. The dogs just go away when they see our dog in our hands. But I went wrong on one occasion. A ferocious stray dog didnt run away even after I picked up my dog. When it reached 1 feet away from me to attack my dog from my hand,i had no option but drop my dog and it attacked my dog. When i threw stones at it it ran away.Stray dogs are usually medium-sized ones so their bites won't kill another dog but i wonder if the case is same with bigger dogs like german sheperd.

I'll tell you what could have happened: you would have taken your dog in your arms. He would have been safe there but I could not say the same thing about your feet.
This is exactly what happened to a friend of mine. She took her beloved dogs into her arms to protect him from a huge dog that escaped from his yard. My friend's dog was safe but the attacker bit my friend's feet to blood. She was lucky some police officers passed by and chased away the vicious dog.

I guess it is not so much of the stone, but your aura of fearless and willing to fight that sent the dogs away, i think when u walking with your pet dog, trying bring a good walking stick , it is better for feeding off dogs and such.Sometime the dogs are barking at your pet dog not so much on u.But sometime dogs are fierce since they will come at u with more than 2 , will nip at your heel and your small doggie.

yeah i am also thinking of carrying a walking stick when i walk my dog but i feel kinda embarrassed to carry a stick when i walk.Instead i am carrying a big stone one my hand and i hope that scares off any fierce dog.I'm also carrying a small bottle of chilli powder mixed with pepper, so that i can throw it if a bigger dog that is not afraid of stone attack us. I have heard of a thing called pepper spray but i don't know if i can get it in my place.

Maybe because dogs are territorial animals so they defend only their inner house. Since dogs are also pack animals, they sensed right away that your dog is not a member of their pack so they are more after him, guess they sense that your dog has a human companion and worse holding a stoneIt would be a different story though if you enter their real territory especially guard dogs like German Shepherds.

For some reason, I think dogs think certain things are for them to get hit with. They sometimes are scared of brooms.
Be careful out there. My neighbor was walking and a dog came out on her and bit her leg so bad she was up for several weeks.

usually dogs dont attack people unless we enter their so called territory. But when you walk with your dog you are at a very high risk of being attacked by dogs in the street.
