What do you really think of controlled crying for babies?

It seems today that the use of controlled crying in order to get babies to self settle is on the rise with today's mums. I would love to know who has tried controlled crying with their child/ren and whether they had sucess with this method.

When my nephew starts to act up for no reason (crying for no reason) I pull him to the side to try to calm him down to see whats wrong he's only 1yr. so he can't respond to me in that type of way. Usually i'll stop him from crying best solution for me give him what he wants

New to that term controlled crying. Always thought that a baby cried for a reason. If mom comes to 'help' with the problem (hunger, wet or something hurts) or because of I need attention, baby and mom or dad become settled. If no one comes it sends another kind of message.
I think I have heard spoil the child will lead to problems later on but I do not think this should apply to a baby. I do not think babies can be spoiled. Later on in self development perhaps but of course every child will be different so there is no set rule, that is for sure.
