How do I know that you have read my comments?

Hi all!
When we receive responses to our discussions, it is imperative on our part to post our comments on the responses received. Our comments make a respondent realize that we have gone through his/her response and what are our reactions about his/her response.
I have observed, on an average, out of ten respondents, only two will post their counter comments on our comments, rest of the eight do not return to post successive comments.
I understand that it is possible that the user would have seen and read our comments through the notification(s) or otherwise and s/he did not think feel like commenting back.
My doubt is – Till someone posts his/her counter-comments, I have no way to know whether s/he actually read my comments or not? I want to know is there a way to ‘know’ that our comments have been seen by the respondent or not?
On my part, I try my best to post counter comments to the comments submitted in response to my own responses to others’ discussions. If I do not have much to write or comment, I simply post emoticon so that the user could know that I’ve seen and gone through his/her comments.
What would you say on my doubt? I would like to know your views.

Hello Deepak,
I understand your concern but before telling my reply to you, I wish to ask, what will/can you do when the poster won’t reply to your response you posted it spending your valuable time? Your answer may be ‘nothing’ so it is all upto the person who started the topic, we can’t compel anybody here.
Now I will tell you how I read my comments. I will read those comments in my inbox first before signing in mylot. If anybody asked anything special then I will sign in mylot and write the reply there, most probably I am busy in that time so I will open those comment in mylot later and rate it positively.
Here I assure you that I always read all the comments in my inbox and later in mylot for rating the same. If I felt to add something further then only I can write there. I too add emoticons to acknowledge the comments but mostly I do it with my own topics only.

Hello Sree!
The answer to your question is - I just can not do anything about that mylotter, who did not choose to come for counter comments. I simply have no option because it was his/her choice.
It is true that we just can not compel anyone for anything, however, my question was - is there a way out?. Your reply tells - there is no way out.
Still posting emoticon(s) will help us to know that our comments were seen.
You are following the right approach and I also do the same, I first take a look at the notifications received and if am on line and I've time to post counter-comments, I immediately do that.
As far as you are concerned, am pretty sure that you go through all the comments, even if you do not have anything new to add.
Many thanks for sharing your views.

Hi, dear.
That is exactly the thing that sometimes makes me wonder. How will I be able to know if my comment has been read and if the owner of the discussion actually commented back. We have no way of finding that out but through checking our notifications which we can only do via our email we use to sign up in Mylot.
I'm one guilty person about this because sometimes I do not comment back after the owner of a particular discussion has responded. I do not open my mail more often.Again, my bad. And sometimes there are just too many discussions that I have responded that I can no longer remember them all and have the time to go through them one by one again. Heck, I do not know if my comment was read or responded back by. Sorry...

Hi dear eureka!
It means that same doubts were lingering in your mind and like me, you do not have any precise answer to this point.
It is correct that notifications tell us if someone has commented back on our comments or not. However, now a days, I find many of my notifications do not reach my inbox. If am interested in a particular discussion, I will have to log in to mylot to check that particular post for counter-comments.
Please do not feel guilty about not posting your counter-comments, as you said that it is not possible to do justice with all the discussions and with all the respondents due to one reason or the other. Tell me - if you like any particular discussion very much, in that case, would you go for counter comments or not?
I hope that even if sometimes you fail to post your counter comments to my comments, you at least go through my comments?
I expect to see your counter-comments at least in this post.
Many thanks for sharing your candid views and joining me in my discussion after a long long time.

I succeeded here in bringing you back to the discussion..
I always post my comments to the responses received from dear friends, specially those who contribute meaningful responses.
I know it very well that you love your own discussions and don't miss to post your counter-comments (because their are your own babies (read discussions)
I can understand your point that if you happen to check your notifications after a gap of few days, the host might have lost the interest in the discussion.
However, in my case, you could come for your counter comments any time (even after gap of months .........lol!). I will surely check your counter comments and revert to you.
Thanks so much for coming back to the post.

And you are goodness right, dear. I came back to check if you have reacted (of course, I knew you would.)and I can post me counter comment.
Very well, dear, if I have a discussion I really like a lot and if it is so interesting yup, I have no doubt I'll keep on checking on it. Sadly, none still got into me that way...:-)
And the reason why I have check on you for the second time is because you are my friend and as I have already stated earlier I knew you would comment to my response. :-)
I do read the comments even if I do not reply to them the second or the umpteenth times. It is because I'm checking my mail way too late that if ever I'll counter comment the starter may have already lost its interest to such topic, therefore, I no longer further elaborate.

Hullo Deepak!
I have never thought twice about this. Whenever we post a response, we eagerly look forward to a comment from the person who started the original post. Similarly , when we ourselves have posted a discussion we look forward to the response of friends and other members. I have naturally assumed that the person who writes a response to my discussion topic would be eager enough to check if there was a comment from the person .

Hullo Kala!
Yeah, it is for sure that whenever we post a meaningful response, we eagerly await for comments from the host. As regards your assumption, even if we presume that respondent would be eager to check our comments, it may or may not be true. If s/he does not turn up again in the discussion, we have no way to know whether s/he actually saw our comments.
Thanks for sharing your views.

An emoticon showing that one has seen the comment/response but has no counter comments to offer is a good idea. I have gone past this stage of wondering why I do not receive comments. A long chain of interaction is no doubt the essence of this site but if not a chain atleast one comment to our responses would be a great thing really here as not many think it necessary to do so.

Hi all!
Many thanks for kick starting the post. I feel that even if we do not have appropriate words to offer counter-comments, emoticon could substitute it. It is always great fun to indulge in chain comments, however, there are select few, who choose to do it. You always feel nice about those, who come for chain comments. You tend to hold a high opinion about those.

Many thanks Sweetie for agreeing with me. You sound absolutely right that many even do not bother to read our comments, so it will be foolish on our part to expect them to post a counter comment. . For them posting responses is enough and they only respond and never look back to earlier discussions.

Hello dpk
Although I have no hard feelings if someone does not comment back to me, as there are times that maybe the discussion starter really can't add any words to what I have stated. I do have a tendency to elaborate a great deal with my responses that really the discussion starter could probably only say I agree, and as we know that is not allowed.
However, there are many instances that I can see due to my high activity here where many do not comment only but once and or twice, leaving loads of responses without any comments.
I can understand a member not having much to say, but then I wonder why discussion after discussion is created. I am not sure they understand the site function well. What I tell many members here is that if they neglect to comment there is no way for the responders to know that their well thought out and at times researched responses are even read. Sadly when this happens way too many times the responders completely stop responding to this type of discussion starter.
I enter all discussions with my offline mindset where if asked a questions and or told a statement I do not stare off into space. Generally offline I would have a comment back, so same here my friend.
So I say that even an emoticon, a brisk of wind, lol anything and something as I have seen it happen many times before where a member use to get loads and loads of responses and no matter how interesting the topic is members outright refuse to respond where no acknowledgement is ever made.

Hello HWG !
It is always great pleasure to read your well researched responses (allow me to use your words).
You see if any user who starts a discussion and finds your response in his/her discussion and does not post counter comments, is not playing the game with the right spirits. You always write meaningful and interesting responses and anyone does not find anything in your response to comment then s/he does not deserve your responses.
You are right there is no use of creating new discussions by a particular user, if s/he has no will to post his/her comments. It will then be a futile exercise. One would definitely stop responding to those hosts, who hardly bother to post comments. I remain responding to those friends' posts, who do not fail to post their comments.
Many thanks for enriching the posts with your valuable thoughts.

Here, I will speak about the time when I was pretty much active here. I used to go to the 'responded' tab and found out the comments and used to comment back. That was easier since I did not ever get notification. I wish I could get more time to come here regularly and take up the old threads and work on them. Nothing like being a part of an interesting conversation, like yours.

Hi mimpi
If you are talking about olden days, I must confess that when I was a green horn here, I learnt the art of chain comments from you and you have always been a good friend, guide and supporter.
I know it that you used to be very particular in posting chain comments and you were nearly perfect in it.
Not receiving notifications is a real big problem, because it makes one handicap and it takes considerable time to search each and every discussion for comments.
Hope to see you here on mylot more and more.
Many Thanks for dropping in.
Happy Puja!

hi dpk okay with the same logic how do you know I or any other mnyotter did not read your comment? we might not always put a second comment but I read back on various discussions all the same. you have to remember that most of us have jobs and families wo we do
'mylotting whenever we can. but assume some of us at least will comment on comments and meet others there and make your discussion really take off splendidly. trust some of us will be back again
and again.Yes I do that too with emoticons as they can say things
better sometimes than I can. hugs from hatley

Hi Hatley!
I have not way to know whether any respondent has not read my comments.
I agree with you that we all have our jobs etc. and it does not become possible every time to post counter comments. However, as far as am concerned, if am not able to post my counter comments immediately, I do at the first available opportunity so that the host could come to know that I have read his/her comments.
I do hope from some of the dear friends (those who are with us for years together) to come back and post their comments.
Many thanks for sharing your wonderful views.

To be honest, I refrain from responding to those mylotters, who do not post their comments on my responses.
I would do it once or twice and then I would change my strategy. It is always enjoyable to interact with like minded lotters and who turn a discussion into a conversation.

I try to have 'last word' on all the discussions I start (not necessarily 'in every thread' of those discussions, but at least 'as indicated by the "last response"-link on the discussion's listing), and not so much on discussions started by others.
In responding to a comment, you're generally either agreeing with them (more-often-than-not, hopefully) or disagreeing. And usually when you agree, that's the 'last word' in that thread. I usually only re-respond to comments on my comments on others' discussions if 1) they ask for clarification or 2) they NEED more clarification than they got

Usually the responder would get a notification in their inbox if a comment has been posted in their box. But the discussion starter would not get notification of further comments being posted on their discussion but that doesn't mean that they don't have to check their discussions often, right?
I agree that putting emoticons is a good way to show that one has already read the comments.

Your point may have some weight that putting emoticon may not be a kind of confirmation that the user has read the comments. However, I believe that those who put emoticons are better than those who do nothing.

hello dpk,
I admit I am guilty when it comes to sub-comment and commenting back to all responses that comes to my box when responding to friends topic.
I am sure you know that I do not receive notification from mylot for almost a year now.
So, the only way for me to know that my comment or response was responded back by the topic starter is to scan back all topic that i responded.
It takes time for me to do that, so most of the time I cannot make a comment back..sorry about this.

I guess you just have to trust that your comments are being read. Sometimes there isn't anything more to say after the first post. I don't like to make posts just to make a post so I won't answer unless there is something else to say. To tell you the truth I never thought about how you would know if your posts are read or not. I don't think you are supposed to just post a emotion without saying something useful with it. We are not supposed to say thanks for the comment or response as that is against the guidelines. I want to post the link to show you where it says that but because I am new here it won't let me copy and paste yet.
I read all the comments on my responses from my email box and if there is something more to say about the subject I will log in and comment back but if there is no more to say about the subject, and not just a thank you, I won't say anymore.
I do read all my comments but there is no way for you to know that if I don't comment back and I guess that's all the discussion you and I had about the subject and it is ove between us. It doesn't mean that the discussion is over for you though because you will probably get more replies to comment to.
Happy mylotting my new friend,
