I know Tiger remembers what happened to him over the last several months.
He was out sunning himself in the yard this morning, it's pretty warm today, unseasonably mild and he likes it.
I stood there, watching him grooming himself, and thought that maybe he would remember treats I used to give him.
So I got the treats and went back outside to where he was.
He visibly perked up, but sat where he was, and didn't move. He was sniffing though.
I got closer to him and pulled out a couple of treats. I held my hand out, but he still wouldn't come up to me.
I tossed a them to him, one at a time, until he was so close, he could eat out of my hand.
But he wouldn't. Even with a treat on my fingers, he wouldn't eat it. He sniffed my fingers but shied away and ran off.
I kept trying, but I didn't want to spoil him with them.
I'll keep trying with him, maybe it will be possible to break through to him while he's outside.
But I know he remembers. He remembers being trapped and confined to a cage. He remembers being dropped by the stupid woman from the rescue.
He remembers the pain he was in from his injuries and remembers being caged and neutered.
Cats aren't stupid, and Tiger is no exception.
I'm going to try to get pictures of him in the yard again, to update what I have.

I agree with you that animals are smarter than people want to give them credit for. My brother has two cats. He has been trying to get them acclimated to being in my apartment so that when he leaves they will have somewhere to go. He was worried about me letting the one go out because he was afraid that she wouldn't find her way back home. He asked me today what time they had left my place last night because she had found her way home. He only lives a couple of blocks from me so that doesn't surprise me, but the fact that they know where to go proves that they aren't totally stupid. I hope Tiger is doing well. Happy thanksgiving!!!

I know cats are smart, after trapping Star once in the live trap, we never got her in it again, and Ronnie, even tho she was a tiny kitten when we trapped her before, it took some work to catch her with it again.... they have amazing memories when they want to

I agree that cats are smarter than some people think. They are smart enough to make us think they are stupid. But they are not at all. My cats are much smarter than my dog and it's funny to see them interact with each other. But they keep me entertained and I suppose that is the main purpose of having pets. I love them!!!

I believe this as I feel they specifically rely on their senses and memory. I would have to say that for him to have returned is a good indication he does have a good memory. Although he is still stand-offish he does know that with you he is safer then roaming on the street.

Animals are very intelligent, each one in their own way that's why I became Vegan. They have society, language, they love each other, they feel pain and fear so it's not fair to use them even for food, clothing or laboratory testing wich it's like nazzism as they feel pain and fear.
I have many cats and dogs, all rescued, they are so funny and each one of them have a personality and years later they surprise us with how intelligent they are, and in how they are thankful and loves us.
Check out Farm Sanctuary dear, they show us how even Cows, Pigs and Chickens are very different from each other :D It's sooo cute to see their videos, they all been rescued from slaughter houses, dairy farm, egg farms, they are so happy now.

Even if he does not remember every detail, I am sure he remembers his feelings about things. You may or may not be able to get him to come back inside or socialize with you. One stray that lived with us for a while definitely remembered that he had been hurt by a man or men. He is the first animal I ever saw that hubby could not touch, for a long long time. He remembered.
