My life is influenced by travel

I think that I caught the travel bug when I was very young and didn't know that I would grow up to be a maxi traveler. I think that traveling has developed my patience, made me tolerant of all religions, made me interested in different cultures and had given me much knowledge about the world. Over the years I have spent a large proportion of my money on traveling. I believe every cent or penny is worth it. I have been able to visit some of the places on my travel wish list over the last three years: Cape Town, Vancouver and Cartagena De Indias. Do you know anyone that has caught the travel bug? If so what do you think he or she has got out of traveling? Have you ever visited a place you have always wanted to go to? Does travel influence your life in any way?

I once read that travel addiction is in the genes. It also shows in other things in life e.g. People who like to change the furniture in their rooms all the time are often addicted to travel. Travel has influenced my life. It made me tolerant towards others, I learnt about different customs and religions. I learnt to read (and speak a little) Greek, Italian, Spanish and Turkish. (I already speak Dutch, English, German and French so Italian and Spanish weren't very difficult). Travel in Arab countries made me learn to decipher Arab script. Only place names because without it is very difficult to hop on a shared taxi. So many people are usually waiting, when one pulls in there is a great rush leaving me behind because I could not read the destination on the sign in the windscreen.

It's amazing how you've learned so many languages. I'm sure that makes it much easier to travel. What motivated you to learn them all? Did you work internationally? Do other languages come easily to you? I can identify with your wanting to learn enough Arabic to read the signs. When I was in Serbia, I knew only a few words of the language. I was not so uncomfortable in Croatia, but the alphabet changed in Serbia, and although I had some exposure to it from my attempt to take Russian, I still was confused by the alphabet when I had to read it on street signs. I was terrified of getting separated from my husband in the city of Belgrad for fear I'd not find my way back to him.

Dutch people used to learn in school besides Dutch, English, French and German. If you went to a grammar school also Latin and Greek. I say 'used to', because learning at least three foreign language is no longer the norm. Dutch and English are still compulsory, and the can add either French or German or neither. This means that the younger generation is no longer able to speak three foreign languages. (Aren't I happy to I belong to the 'older' generation?) I haven't been to Serbia (yet), but I am sure that when/if I go, I will learn the alphabeth before going. Studying languages is my hobby and I love reading gammar books. It is fascinating to see how languages differ from each other and how many common factors there are.

Of course travelling opens us up to different cultures, languages and experiences. We will get a lot of invaluable experiences which are worth remembering in future days to come. Meanwhile, we may come across some bad situations also. In either way it's valuable and memorable! I have not traveled out of my country but wherever I've traveled within India, I've always cherished those places in one way or other.

I am very happy to hear that you have explored much of India. It is lovely that you cherish the places that you have traveled to. I hope that you will visit many more interesting, beautiful and fascinating places. I hope one day you are able to visit a few other countries.

Hi Maxine, I call it a vacation bug, more than a travel bug in my case. I feel I need to be in different places basically because I need changes of activities in my life. you cannot imagine how boring this time with chemo has been, as I cannot but stay at home most of the time.

Hi Marguicha. I loved hearing about your past travels to Aruba, Spain and the San Blas Islands. I hope that you will travel again in the future and have a happy time. Staying at home can be boring I know. I hope that your chemo is making you much better. Now is the time to look back on happier times. Many hugs.

I´m planting veggies to have some fun at home. In fact, Leticia is planting most of it and I give directions taken out of internet. I hope that when you come, there will still be tomatoes. We planted the seedlings yesterday and had the luck of having a heavy mist this morning so the plants were watered in the best way.

You are descibing me! My mom used to work for the airlines when she was young and when I was a teenager she told me - everyone has to work so why not work in an industry that gives you perks you want!! My first job out of high school - well after a year of college was with Alitalia Airlines and I have been in the travel industry ever since. The perks were much better back then. I used to have so many free tickets I could not use them all! When I was 19 I went to Egypt, Italy twice, Hawaii, and various places in the US and that was all in one year - lol~! Nowadays I get maybe 3-4 free tickets each year but only for use in the US and I get some hotels for free and the rest at a discount. My car rentals are just discounted a little. I still love to travel but now I have to plan better. I remember taking a flight over to Rome and landing in the morning - going shopping all day for Xmas gifts - then jumping on a return flight that night. Business class both ways so I got the better meals and free drinks! Yes, those were the days!! Addicted to travel - yes, I am!

Thanks for your excellent response. You are the same as me! Only you work in travel and I keep travel as my hobby. I loved hearing about when you got much better perks. Having so many free tickets in those days you must have wondered where to go next. It is awful that that you can only get 3 to 4 free flights a year. The worst thing about that is you are restricted to the USA. Getting some free or discounted hotels must be fantastic. I love the sound of your trip to Rome. You are 100% addicted to travel.

I had to go to Egypt by myself when I was 19 because no one else had time to go with me!! That was an amazing trip!! Scary, and fun! I was not about to let those tickets go to waste. When my kids were babies we went to Disney just about every other month! We had the free air, hotels were about 20 dollars for me, car rental free, just paid for the tickets and the food. I am addicted to it. Nowadays we travel about 4 times a year. We went to NYC 3 times this past year, Atlanta once, and rented a house on the beach too. Not sure about next year yet - lol. Sounds like you have an addiction to travel too! It's a great addiction to have though!

I understand that as you have a farm it isn't possible for you to leave your animals. I am delighted that your mom has the travel bug and has been to lots of different countries. Good luck with saving to move to Alberta.

I am pleased that you often traveled with friends when you were a young boy. I hope that from your wages you will save up some money to travel when time makes it possible. Yes, travel in some countries is viewed as a luxury but for me it is a necessity. I hope one day you have enough money to go off traveling.

I am the same - I also have the travel bug and I feel my life would be boring without being able to see the rest of the world! I can not even imagine what it would be like to never have known what another place feels like and can never understand some people who have never owned a passport!

Hi Frankie. I am delighted that you have got the travel bug. Seeing the rest of the world is really enjoyable and interesting. I visited a developing place in Indonesia just four hours from Singapore. The poor people had no chance of ever going there. Apart from the motorbikes it looked like somewhere in the 18th Century. To have never owned a passport for such people is very sad.

I couldn't imagine a life without travelling. It is my top priority, and I am always saving up for my next trip. I never regret spending my money on travelling instead of the material things that my friends buy, because travelling brings me so much joy. I really enjoy exploring other countries and learning more about other cultures and I would say that travelling has influenced my life in many different ways. It is a wonderful way to learn something about other cultures and lifestyles and I find that really interesting.

Wow! It is amazing to hear your cousin used to have a Bed and Breakfast called Denmark House on the Locking Road. I am delighted to hear she now lives in sunny Cyprus. How did she get to move over there?

Cousin moved to Cyprus after having an apartment there for holidays. Her connection with Cyprus has lasted for about 13 years so far and has had a bungalow built there which has been home for about 6 years. Her husband is a volunteer worker for Argos cat and dog shelter there.
