Did you know this fact about giving blood?

Every single pint of blood that's donated is a potential lifesaver for three adults! Do you give blood? Have you ever given blood but don't do so now? I have given blood in the past and would still give blood but everytime I go to try there is never enough iron in my blood.

I have never donated blood because there is no clinic close enough with opening hours that suit me. I would like to gonate blood. Apparently I have a very common blood group, 0+, which is very useful for donations. Blood donation in austrlia is voluntary, and we are not paid for it.

A mobile unit is a good idea. I can ring the red cross and ask if they come into my area on a saturday. I live in the metro, so the problem has been the timing of when centres are open.

Jenny, is there a local Red Cross office near you? I would call and ask them about this. They may be able to get you into a blood drive. I live in a remote area and the Red Cross comes here every three months for a blood drive with their mobile units.

I give as often as it is allowed, sometimes I do a special procedure and give two units of red blood cells because my blood type is in demand.

Well done on being able to give more via a special procedure. I'm sure you have helped many people.

I give blood as often as i can its nice to feel that i am doing some good in the world and helping to save the lives of others. The reason i first started doing this was because my Dad had two blood transfusions when he was ill which helped lengthen his fight against cancer and i decided that i wanted to help others in similar situations and giving blood is an easy way to do this that almost anyone can do and more people should do.

It's great to donate blood. I had this opportunity once but I have a low blood pressure and they didn't want to take my blood. In my country right now there is a shortage of blood in the hospitals. When a patient needs a transfugion somebody has to donate blood in a special center. Recently my daughter did this for her grandmother. And blood donation is good to your health too: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/164511/the_benefits_of_donating_blood.html You can find plenty of articles with myLot search!

I do not like the idea of giving my blood. I think it is personally meant for me. I am not too healthy enough. I can not give out my blood because I do not know if it will have a long term or short term effect on my personal health much later on.

I am interested about donating blood, but I am afraid of the needle.Am I right that the doctors have to make a hole in my vein?Eeew...That sounds horrible.I would want to donate blood but I don't want needles. It is not too painful but have having wounds, especially those that are caused by needles, sounds too frightening.lol.

The needle pain only lasts for a few seconds. When they do decide to take my blood I never look as I'm sure I would faint

Dear friend, I have donated blood few times, and also healthy and safe donor card holder. I feel it would be better to get blood donated from healthy donors. Moreover it would be safe from transfering any diseases. One of the enjoyable things I had my life was my blood had saved a 6 year old child. She gifted me a small bear and hugged me thanking me. Her parents even invited me for dinner. But I avoided them when they offered me cash. I too hope there is enough iron in my blood too otherwise I would not be given the card I hold that are given for healthy donors.

You need to eat kidney beans and grape juice. Both have alot of iron in them. I used to him blood when my work had a blood drive. But now I can't give it anymore because my veins are too small now for some reason. Age is weird that way. LOL So every pint helps three people? That is so cool!

My viens are small and they have had a job in the past to find them. Beans are very good for you but they do make you fart sometimes

I try to give blood whenever I possible can. The red cross comes to my school and we can give blood between classes. I think it is cool to get to pick whatever colored tape I want when they bandage me up. Also I know I am helping people. Plus I get a donor card in the mail and I like seeing my numbers grow. It tells me how many donations I have already completed.

I've always wanted to be a blood donor. I have not experienced it yet but if my blood past all the test needed to be one I would love to do it.

I know how important it would be that every healthy person would donate blood as regularly as possible, but I just can't do it. I feel sick only when I imagine that I will suffer some important blood loss, and I also feel very uncomfortable whenever there is needed to be pinched with a nail and then to see how my blood is flowing out from my body. I know this because I had to do analysis in the past and I didn't feel well then neither. But if I hadn't had this problem, I would donate blood regularly. Unfortunately, it makes me sick so I rather don't. But I appreciate everybody who has not this problem and does a good to the society.

There's no problem in not giving any blood, its not everybody's cup of tea and we can't all be the same. I'm sure that you do something else that many of us don't do to help people so thats fine. I went years without giving blood then gave a pint and never went back for years so we are all different. We can all help the world in diffrent ways.

Actually I normally give blood on a yearly basis. There is always a blood shortable in my blood type so I get calls from the blood bank I normally go to on a regular basis. Just this year, my kids school was having a blood drive, but my hubby and I were rejected because we had been to the islands on vacation early this year, so because of our recent travel and exposure to one of the islands we have to wait til the end of this year to donate, so that kind of sucked. But I normally try and donate at least once a year, if not twice.

Glad that you give blood espically as there is a shortage in your group, they will need all they can get. I can't remeber what blood group I am but its one of the common ones.... does that make me common I wonder?? And you posh!!! LOL Only joking

It is a very noble deed . I have never given although many in my family donate at regular intervals . I have iron deficiency and I am not allowed by the doctor . Especially during the summer time there is dearth of blood and many should come forward . Mass awareness is the solution to inspire the people . It is so sad to note that thalassemia and other such patients suffer for the need of blood .

Sorry you can't give blood, they won't always take mine as sometimes my iron count is far too low, don't know why it is low as I feel 100% in myself. Must be my body changing

Donating blood is actually good for your system. But that is if you are healthy enough to donate. As far as I know I was only able to donate blood twice in my life. That is because I have a fear of needles, and I have seen how big the needles are for blood donations. I was only forced to donate twice, one was for a friend's baby and one for my aunt who had cancer. But I swear I cried before agreeing to it.

In the past, I would try to donate blood, but because I had major reconstructive surgery, I wasn't allowed. Now, I was told because of the joint itself may pose a risk for contamination. I haven't went back to try it, though I should find out. Let me get my blood in order first, then I can see.

I used to give blood all the time. The company I worked for was a big supporter of Red Cross, and they gave us incentives for donating. We had a lounge at work, and we would stay there for hours after we gave blood. That's before we ate a big meal that the company also sponsored. After I left that company, I haven't had a chance to donate.

There was this church mate that got sick and needed some blood. My mom and I went for a blood screening the sad news is that we do not have sufficient blood to give away since it is just enough for us. And the doctor say that they ask man to donate since they do not have their menstruation period where we as women lose blood. It is easy for men to regain the blood they have lost.

Maybe if the situation calls for an urgent need and fits me to donate then I will most especially if the recipient is my family. But to give time to go to place where the donation will be done or conducted, I think I can not because I need to prioritize first my chores. I am willing to give, but I am thin and get tired easily maybe because I am already old. But I admire those who voluntarily give their time to donate blood and for sure they feel happy because it is more than money they gave.

Hi i just wanted to tell you that you are not old. Considering that many healthy people live to be 100, 50 is middle. Im older that you and i donate twice a week.

I'm sure they will take blood from anyone as longs as they are fit and well regardless of there age. Ages are going up all the time, years ago you retire at 65 and sat in a chair, now retired people seem to do so much more than younger peopel, travel etc

Oh yes we are not old. Twice a week, you really watch your health. I am a coffee addict maybe the reason why I easily get tired.

I do not have any experience about giving or donating a blood. It's because I am anemic. I do not have much hemoglobin on my blood. However, I do encourage a lot of people to have this donation of blood experience. I have a friend who was an officer of Red Cross when I was still in high school. And whenever they needed persons who could donate, I extend my help in encouraging people. At least I have contributed in their advocacy, right?
@Anne18 (11029)

Glad that even though you can't give blood you are able to encourage people to give blood
