petersum, many Americans have tremendous loads of debt. This is such a materialistic society that people think they have to have this or that or that they deserve it whether they have money for it or not.
I am American and I have no debt and haven't had for years. I am not typical, unfortunately.

Actually I just paid off all of my student loans, so right now, absolutely not one cent of debt. Believe me when I say that was a breath of fresh of air to say the very least. To receive that notification of that bill(or any bill), being completely paid, with the $0.00 balance. That really is quite a feeling to say the very least. A feeling of a great deal of freedom when one really thinks about it. Then again, I think that mostly I am very careful.
I try and not live beyond my means most of the time. In fact, the further I can get my expenses under my means, the better. And credit cards are like the plague. I don't use them unless absolutely necessary and then I pay them immediately. Its the interest that can get you on the back end. People tend to pay the minimum payment and that perhaps cuts them off at the knees later on down the road.

I have no debt, mainly because I don't have a credit card, and I've never purchased anything I'd need a loan for, at least, not anything in the hundreds or thousands of dollars range.

Wow, I don't know how everyone can handle all that debt! I'm young so that is probably why I am not in debt.. But thinking about University next year already has me stressed because I'm going to need like 40 000 dollars in student loans for the 5 years I'm in school for.
Right now I'm 1000 dollars up and debt free.. As long as my car doesn't break down on me again..

ahh im not in debt and glad but i see it can be really easy to get in so much debt, you want things you have to pay for them schooling, a car to get their or maybe somewhere to live, then when your finshed school theres no point in wasting money in paying someone elses mortage so you get your own, then bills car payments shopping and plus everything you used to added in too top it off. lol thats life :)

I'm so glad not to have credit cards. Well I do have a store credit card but no major credit cards. With our mortgage and van payment and various owed bills I would say about 90,000. Yikes. Our van will be payed off in a little under 2 years. I can't wait to get it paid off.
