Do we really need zoos around?

zoos keep wild animals in cages instead of letting them freely roam the wilderness, wild animals like lions or tigers, crocodiles, snakes, eagles aren't domisticateed like dogs or cats, so should zoos really keep them? I dont think zoos can really help the environment, i mean if two species go out in the wild they'll make more babies which will help the ecosystem and lessen the danger of extinction but when they keep animals in their cage the multiplication will be lowered, for almost 10 folds. Extinction - once done, cannot be returned. We already experienced many animal specie extinction because of human's greediness. When a specie is extinct the ecosystem or the nature itself would not be balanced anymore, either the predators will all die due to lack or preys or the preys would grew to a population that can even harm us humans because there are lack or predators. I'm raelly convinced that people sometimes causes their own troubles and problems due to greediness and selfishness. Should we still keep animals in zoos?

Hm... good point there, I don't like how zoos are used to lock up animals in captivity and used for human entertainment and observation. I watched The planet of the Apes and it showed this same idea. But zoos are needed in order to breed some species. Some species of animals are almost extinct now because of their environment being destroyed and more predators being after them. So that's why we have zoos to successfully breed animals while in the wild some of the babies can die easily. Once cared for and old enough, the animals are then left out into the wild to pretty much repopulate the land. I think zoos should only be used for this to benefit the animal and keep the numbers balanced. But using them for people to pay and look is really animal cruelty. If we want to check out the wild life we can take a trip to Africa and observe the animals without having to have them all locked up.

Not all zoos keep animals in cages. There are many examples of wild animals roaming the British countryside. Enclosures - yes, not not cages.

there's actually more to a zoo than just the animals being on display to the public. they have breeding programmes, organised between different zoos to keep a gene pool varied, rather than just small animal groups breeding to relatives. the animals can live without threat of predation or environmental destruction. the zoos educate people about environmental issues, and can help raise money for campaigns that help those animals in the wild. many zoos even go out to places where environmental damage is taking place and educate the locals in ways they can live in harmony with their surroundings, and survive without destroying the habitats around them. so long as the conditions are adequate for an animal to have a natural amount of space for their species to range over, enough food, water, shelter and company, and are able to behave as naturally as possible, then I think they can be a very good thing.

Hi there, You have raised a valid points in the post. Keeping certain animals that do not harm people is to some extent ok. But when I see a lion roaring inside a cage I feel as if we have put it inside the cage as a punishment. Another thing is that if at all you want zoos you keep it open only for those animals and other creatures that are engendered.

Hello Vinay, I don't fully agree with you. You cannot say that in zoos there are lower chance of multipilcation. There are lot of countries where there are even more chance of theirs for breeding. I know the condition of zoos in INDIA are pathetic like i have seen the zoo of DELHI where it is tough for wild animals to live breeding is something we should not talk for here.Government should take measures to improve facility here and at least they should be made such so that animals could stay there properly.

I think it is no need to do this, because it's unfair to the animals which come from wild nature, and in my opinion, when the animals keep in zoos often looks so tired and depressed, there should be built more nature reserve,i think that may be comfortable to animals, and that should set up a organization to protact wild-animals.

I think zoos have an important part to play in helping to prevent the extinction of endangered species.1 They educate the public about the risks of extinction.2 They help to create a healthy breeding population by sharing breeding animals. 3 Zoos also help to support conservation projects to maintain wild populations and the habitat they rely on for survival.Last time i visited the zoo the shop allowed people to adopt wild animals.

Of course we need zoos. I dont know why you think that animals are 'kept in cages' in zoos, as there are many zoos that have specially set up habitat enclosures for their animals, and the animals are treated as they would be in the wild. There are many different species that are hinted and are endangered. There is often no way that some animals can reproduce in the wild without the danger of being killed and eventually becoming extinct. There have been many pandas and other such endangered species that have been allowed to breed in the zoos. If you know about animals, you will know that they will not reproduce if they are unhappy. You are wrong when you say that animals dont reproduce in zoos. That is one of the main reasons that zoos are even set up. They are there so that people like you who obviously have no knowledge whatsoever about wildlife can actually see the animals close up. You really should research why zoos are set up because you are obviously very uneducated. Here's the very simple explanation as to why we have zoos, just for you: • They allow us to study and find out more about animals that we would not understand otherwise. • Zoos allow people to see and connect with what would otherwise be unavailable to them. • Zoos and wildlife parks are places where we can protect species that are in trouble, so they don't disappear from the Earth completely. • Zoos give people the opportunity to see animals in person, often up close, to watch them and to appreciate them.

To be honest, I don't know the actual answer to this question though. I rarely visit the zoo in my city, and I only been there twice in my whole life. So, if it is such harm to the animal kingdom, they should consider release some of those animals to the wilderness and let them live their own life instead of caged them. I hope that you are right.

this is a hard subject for me i love zoos because i love seeing all the animals i know that if it were not for the zoo i would never see but i do think it is wrong to keep wild animals locked up in cages and as much as i would hate not to have a zoo around so that i could see all the different animals i just want what is best for the animals and i think that is to let them roam free i agree with you about extinction the animals have every right to be on this earth and it is not right for humans to lessen their chances of living their lives to the fullest out in the wild
