Have to look for more work as my job finishes soon

My current job ends in four weeks. I am a full time receptionist/admin at H & R Block. I had seven weeks work with them last year, and this year it is 4 months work.My prefered job would be reception in an accountants office, as that is where my skills are.So far, the only vacanices I have seen in that area are not in my location, or they only want juniors ( I am 53). I am quite happy to apply for other receptionist jobs. There are always vacancies in the medical and dental field, but 99% of them say they want someone experienced in that area. So, far, I have applied as a receptionist in Aged Care, Dental, Medical and I have another medical application to do tonight. I have collected a list of names and addresses of neary all the accountancy offices in my area, and I intend applying for jobs with them, even though they haven't advertised. It is very hard in this job market, especially if one is over 50 and they want experience, even with courses I have done, such as myob.

I have not had any interviews yet, I think because most of the jobs have not closed their applications yet.

Vacancies for our age group are very slim. Most employers are looking for younger people to employ. Unless we are willing to go down to lower salary then maybe there is a chance to be employed. Since my last employment 15 years ago I have not gone for any job interview. Though am a qualified secretary but my age is a disadvantage. There is no part time employment or short term contract available here. So chances of going back to work is nil.

Yes, it is much the sma ehere, with over 50s findning it hard to get employment. Getting some retraining may help, which it did in my case. We have alot of part time employment, so I may stand a better chance in that regard.

It is difficult to find jobs at our age, I am older than you. I hope you find something that is good and will be a pleasant job and pay enough.

Feeling comfortable with the staff and especially the boss is very important to me. One job I started last year, I walked out after less than two days, as the boss was a bully. I wrote to them and asked for my pay, which I got. With the job had this year before working for H & R Block, I also had a difficult boss. I put up with it for 2 months or so, then had a go at her. She complained to the manager who had a big talk with me. I told him that I will not put up with bossy managers, and if that was the kind of employee he wanted, then I wasn't suitable for the position. I stayed on. When I did leave, they gave me a $500 bonus.

Maybe you could make enquiries or sign up with Joblink or other employment agencies and let them help you find a job. They might also be able to put you on to short courses for Receptionist in the Aged Care, Dental or Medical field. You might be able to do some work experience to get yourself hired. Most of the time, each office will have their own way of doing things and you will need training anyway. It is hard. I wish you luck

I wish the best for you. It seems that jobs are really hard to come by these days.

It is hard to find a new job. Even worse if you are older. Everyone wants to hire someone with experience in that field, but how can you get experience if no-one will hire you. You are pretty much stuck in one area unless someone is brave enough to hire someone new to that field.

That is exactly right. I saw quite a lot of vacancies for medical and dental receptionists. You would think if there was a shortage in that field, they would be prepared to hire someone who is prepared to do the training, like I am. but they want experience, it's a viscious circle.
