I don't know as that would be the right approach for everyone. People run into situations all the time where they just need temporary help. Selling those things might buy food for a week or two but probably not much longer. I do feel that the food stamp program hands out foodstamps way too freely but I have to say "NO" to people having to sell their belongings before applying. What I would like to see is them looking closer at those applying and their individual situations. I work in a store and I see a lot of young people ages 19 or so getting food stamps. They don't have kids and are living with friends or family. They get hundreds of dollars worth and mainly are using them for junk food. Some get way more than they need and treat their friends to junk food as well or sell them for cash for other things. There is a lot of abuse in the system for sure but I wouldn't want to see someone that truly needs the help get rid of what they do have in order to get that help and suffer more. The ones that are abusing the system will still be there.

As much as someone can sell those things you wouldn't be much for them. The person that buys it might keep it for cheap or resell it for more stuff. So its not as easy as you may think it is to sell things. Just because some has nice things doesn't mean they can't afford food. The same things gos with crappy things that doesn't mean they aren't poor. Its a life style that someone wants to life. If you have nice things that doesn't mean you got those things when you did have money coming in or got them for your family to make them happy. Food doesn't always make someone happy.
My family has been there where we don't have much money or food but yeah we still had nice things but didn't sell them because then we wouldn't have anything outside of food to look forward to when the power goes out, when we are lonely. We never poor enough for food stamps and some times I went hungry while pregnant the same as my husband. He made enough to feed us for the most weeks and we had to get lots of help from family.

I dont think you should sell all your items, You might want to sell some if you feel it necessary especially to pay bills. But not to buy food. thats not realistic as it wont go that far. And you need some enjoyment in life. Especially considering that they most likely will need to stay home. They cant just stare at the wall. I mean you dont know their entire situation. Such as, why they need help now, how they got the items.

Sure you should sell them first and use the cash for food, instead of go straight for food stamp. But why do that when the food stamp department employees don't check out on you for all these luxury items you have at home before giving out the food stamps paid for by tax payers hard earned dollars. Public employees are too lazy to make sure those who apply for food stamp are really left with nothing in life to deserve food stamps, they will tell you it is not necessary to sell your HD-TV , Xbox, Pentium 4 computer, SUV and even million dollar mansion to receive food stamp in USA.
