Phone Apps

I am kinda new to phone apps. I guess the truth is I know nothing about them. I have always just used my phone to make calls or use the push to talk when I had a Nextel. Now there are so many apps for your phone that I am lost. I have an LG GU295 which is not a smart phone but it does have internet and push to talk. This is a pre-paid go phone with AT&T. I used to have service with Boost Mobile but I couldn't get a good signal inside my house. I really need to use my cell phone will sitting at my desk inside the house but I can't seem to find a phone that gets really good signal, but I guess that's another issue. Right now I am interested in learning about getting apps for my phone. Like GPS and the mobile phone locator. Really most interested in utility apps but would like to know what is available. I have already gone to AT&T's website and looked for the available apps for my phone which are slim except for crap that doesn't interest me. I want to know if you can install phone apps from other places than your service provider? Is there a place to get apps for free? Right now any advice and information is welcome. The only reason I got the phone I did is because they were out of my first and second choice phone. I had already looked through the available phones online and checked out reviews on a lot of them. It took me a long time but I found a couple of phones that the reviews said got a really good signal indoors. Unfortunately when I went to order these phones were out of stock so I let them talk me into buying the one I have for $39.00 and I figured I could update to another one later. I still get a weak signal inside but I get one although I worry it is not dependable. Any advice on that subject is welcome also.

Call me old fashioned, but my phone is for talking to other people - only! Everything else, I can do on my computer - without using a magnifying glass to see the screen!
